The significance of aductal zones on pancreatograms: an anatomo-clinical assessment.

The authors analyzed 177 endoscopic retrograde pancreatograms (ERPs) with normal findings. The complete visualization of the side branches was achieved in 128 patients (72.3%), and aductal zones in the isthmus and mid-body of the pancreas were noted in 49 (27.3%) of these patients. The existence and incidence of the aductal zones were evaluated and verified in 141 anatomical duodenopancreas specimens. Thirty-two corrosion casts and 109 postmortem pancreatograms were analyzed. The postmortem specimens had a 36.2% incidence of aductal zones in the same location, with no statistically significant difference compared with the clinical pancreatograms. The visualization of the side branches was 100% on the postmortem pancreatograms, indicating that the clinical ERCP incidence of aductal zones is realistic.

The role of beta-endorphin in pregnancy and delivery.

This paper deals with beta-endorphin determination in 20 autopsy specimens of human fetal and neonatal pancreas, as well as in the placental tissue specimens of the same fetoplacental units, by means of radioimmunoassay (RIA-Nichols Institute). Peripheral blood samples of 10 healthy non-gravids were taken as controls. Our results present a marked increase of beta-endorphin levels with the progression of gestation, reaching a peak of 3960 pg/g at term. The data obtained indicate that beta-endorphin plays an important role in pregnancy and delivery regulation.

Is there a link between beta-endorphin and diabetes in pregnancy?

The possible influence of both beta-endorphin and insulin secretion on diabetes development in pregnant women was studied by means of radioimmunoassay technique (RIA-Nichols Institute). The study was carried out by determination of beta endorphins in peripheral blood samples of 28 pregnant women with gestational diabetes. They consisted of two subgroups: 14 women with insulin independence, and 14 with insulin-dependent disease. Beta endorphin increase was found in both groups, according to the progression of gestation, and the rise was significantly higher in the insulin-dependent group. At the same time, insulin application caused a marked growth of beta-endorphins in insulin-dependent group. Beta-endorphins, inhibiting insulin secretion, can influence gestational diabetes development.

Diabetes Mellitus, Type 1

Oxygen consumption mediated by M2 muscarinic receptors in rat salivary glands.

Carbachol and oxotremorine stimulated the consumption of oxygen in rat parotid, submandibular, and sublingual gland slices in a dose-dependent manner. Their actions were abolished by atropine and nifedipine but not by trihexyphenidyl. The findings suggest that carbachol and oxotremorine enhanced oxygen consumption in the major salivary gland slices by the activation of the calcium-dependent muscarinic M2 receptors.

Animals

The effects of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and carbachol on oxygen consumption in rat sublingual gland slices.

Epinephrine and carbachol, but not norepinephrine, significantly stimulated oxygen consumption in rat sublingual gland slices. The response to epinephrine was blocked by phentolamine and yohimbine, while propranolol and prazosin did not affect it. The response to carbachol was blocked by atropine. Also, oxygen consumption induced by both epinephrine and carbachol was inhibited by verapamil. These findings suggest that epinephrine enhanced oxygen consumption in sublingual gland slices by activation of alpha 2-adrenergic receptors, while carbachol activated muscarinic receptors; activation of both receptors mediated the respiratory response by facilitating the entry of extracellular Ca.

[Radiologic examination of the temporomandibular joint. 1. One plane radiographs].

A knowledge of the anatomic form and relationship of the components of the temporomandibular joint is an important factor in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of temporomandibular joint disturbances. Radiographs of the temporomandibular joint in one plane are the simplest, fastest and easiest way to obtain certain information of temporomandibular joint components. Form and location of the temporomandibular joint are the limiting factors, in the radiological examination of this part of the human body. Different techniques for obtaining the optimal one plane radiograph have been developed to solve this problem. Each of these techniques depicts a different part of the joint. Thus, no method is superior to any other, and none is suitable for all situations.

Humans

[The opioid peptide, beta-endorphin, in spontaneous vaginal delivery and cesarean section].

The opioid peptide, beta-endorphin, originates from proopiomelanocortin (POMC) under the influence of corticotropin releasing hormone (CHR). It increases the threshold of pain and has a certain influence on the formation of hypophyseal hormones, especially in stress. It is found that beta-endorphin stimulates the secretion of prolactin, a growth hormone, and vasopressin; it inhibates formation of follicle-stimulating and luteinizating hormones, oxytocin and dopamine, and gonadotropin, a releasing hormone. The process of acetylization decreases its activity. The results of experimental trials revealed that acetylisation in the foetal period was absent. The aim of the study was to define beta-endorphin concentration during normal vaginal labor and Cesarean section. Samples of peripheral blood of patients with spontaneous vaginal labor (n = 15) and of those in whom labor was operatively terminated (Cesarean section) (n = 10), were analysed. Values of this opiate were determined in the umbilical cord of newborn infants, in the amniotic fluid and placental compartment. The obtained results were statistically analysed. In intrapartum beta-endorphins were significantly increased reaching the highest level during expulsion (326 pg/ml); in the placental compartment these values were higher (in retroplacental blood 514 pg/ml) reaching the highest value of 917 pg/ml, p less than 0.01 in the placenta. In Cesarean section beta-endorphin values in the peripheral blood showed no significant differences during spontaneous vaginal labor. However, increased values of this natural opiate were observed six hours after surgery. Beta-endorphin concentrations in the placental compartment and the placenta during normal vaginal labor were significantly higher in comparison with labor by Cesarean section (p less than 0.01).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
