Site-dependent action of intracerebroventricular 5-hydroxytryptamine on the cold-stimulated thyrotropin secretion in male rats.

The effects of central 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) infusions on the cold-stimulated thyrotropin (TSH) levels were studied in male rats. Stainless-steel cannulas were implanted stereotaxically into the anterior or the posterior third ventricle or just lateral to the hypothalamic paraventricular nuclei bilaterally 7 days before experiments. Infusion of 5-HT (4.5 and 9 micrograms/rat) into the posterior third ventricle attenuated significantly the cold-stimulated TSH levels. Inversely, infusion of 5-HT (9 micrograms/rat) into the anterior third ventricle augmented significantly the TSH cold response. Bilateral 5-HT infusions into the vicinity of the hypothalamic paraventricular nuclei did not affect the TSH cold response. Serum prolactin levels increased significantly after 5-HT administration into the anterior and the posterior third ventricle, but no consistent effect on growth hormone (GH) levels could be detected. Infusion of 5-HT into the anterior and the posterior third ventricle decreased body temperature irrespective of the observed hormonal response to 5-HT. The results are in favor of a dual and possibly site-dependent role for 5-HT in the regulation of the cold-stimulated TSH secretion in the rat. The opposite effects of 5-HT on the TSH cold response may result from the predominant inhibition of either the thyrotropin-releasing hormone or the somatostatin-secreting cell groups.

Time relationships and reversal by two indoleamines of the pinealectomy-inhibited thyrotropin secretion in male rats.

Time relationships and mediators of the inhibitory effect of pinealectomy on cold-induced TSH secretion were studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Pinealectomy but not sham operation significantly reduced the TSH cold-response (30 min at +4 degrees C) in 6-8 week-old rats on the 3rd postoperative day. Longer postoperative periods resulted in gradual attenuation of the effect of pinealectomy. Pinealectomy did not modify basal TSH levels on the 3rd or 7th postoperative day. Melatonin, arginine vasotocin and crude pineal extracts failed to antagonise the suppressed cold-response in pinealectomised rats. 5-Hydroxytryptamine and 6-methoxy-tetrahydro-beta-carboline, however, antagonised partially but significantly the pinealectomy-induced reduction in TSH cold-response. Although transient, the suppression of cold-stimulated TSH secretion by pinealectomy may be caused by lack of two pineal indoleamines 5-hydroxytryptamine and/or 6-methoxy-tetrahydro-beta-carboline.

Mailed TL dosimeters for monitoring the output from diagnostic x-ray equipment.

Mailing thermoluminescent (TL) dosimeters for exposure to users of diagnostic x-ray equipment is a simple and inexpensive way of monitoring output from x-ray units. The readings given by TL dosimeters were originally compared with ionization chamber measurements and shown to give reliable and compatible results. Mailed TL dosimeters alone were later used in a university hospital to check the functioning of exposure timers in thorax and Bucky stands. A thorough survey of the outputs from all x-ray units in use throughout the country can be performed within a few months using this technique.
