Constructions of educational meaning in the narratives of four deaf women teachers.

Deaf teachers bring unique perspectives to the teaching of deaf and hard of hearing students, yet their "voices" have been recognized in neither sociological, psychological, nor philosophical accounts of education and deafness. In the present ethnographic study, narrative analysis is used to frame a description of how four deaf women make sense of their lives as teachers as they disclose their beliefs concerning teaching, their deafness, and their connection with the Deaf community.

Educational interpreting and teacher preparation. An interdisciplinary model.

Educational interpreting remains the fastest growing area in the field of interpreting largely due to the Individual with Disabilities Education Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The United States Department of Education, Personal Preparation and Special Topics, has awarded grants to a number of organizations, agencies, colleges and universities to establish preparation programs for educational interpreters. This article describes how resources, namely the curriculum, extant in a teacher preparation program in deafness are used in establishing a four year preparation program for educational interpreters leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. The interdisciplinary model outlined follows the curriculum recommendations of the Council on Education of the Deaf/Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Ad Hoc Committee for Educational Interpreting.

Reforming teacher education: a model program for preparing teachers of deaf children.

Recent literature is replete with the concerns of general educators that students majoring in elementary and pre-primary education do not acquire sufficient content and liberal arts matter as a part of their knowledge base. Educators in undergraduate teacher preparation programs in deafness have expressed the same concerns. This article describes how the Program in Education of Deaf Children at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro added courses in a second major and in liberal arts to expand the knowledge base of prospective teachers of deaf and hard of hearing children.

Computer-aided emergency telecommunications for the deaf.

Computer-aided telecommunications provide deaf teletypewriter users with 24-hour toll-free access to emergency services. An interface and software link the deaf caller's teletypewriter (TDD) with a microprocessor by reducing and inverting voltage levels between the two devices. This system facilitates rapid transmission of linguistically controlled triage questions to meet the communication needs of deaf patients.
