The study of a swept electron beam in order to apply Boag's theory for calculation of the collection efficiency: I. Beam and swept area characteristics.

The characteristics of swept electron beams produced by Sagittaire or Saturne type accelerators were investigated by film dosimetry. Beam sections perpendicular to the beam limiting system (BLS) axis are fully described by Gaussian curves close to the centre of the field defined by the BLS, but they become more and more distorted as the elementary beam approaches the BLS. The swept area was also evaluated and was related to the magnitude of the current applied to the two orthogonal magnets of the sweeping system.

The study of a swept electron beam in order to apply Boag's theory for calculation of the collection efficiency: II. Application to different ionisation chambers and comparison with other methods.

Boag's theory is applied to thimble and plane parallel ionisation chambers using previously determined swept area dimensions and electron beam characteristics. The results obtained were compared with those obtained by measurements performed with lithium borate discs, by application of the 'equivalent dose per pulse' empirical method and the 'two voltage' method. All the results were in reasonable agreement.

Comparative dosimetry between iridium wires and seed ribbons.

We have undertaken a computer study that explores the conditions under which seed ribbons may replace iridium 192 wires in the Paris System. Compared with continuous iridium 192 wires, seed ribbons demonstrate greater inhomogeneity and loss of flexibility, simplicity, and other advantages. Nonetheless, we have defined the conditions where seed ribbons may be used in the Paris System to give satisfactory dose distributions and acceptable levels of heterogeneity within any given implant volume. These conditions include seed length, spacing between seeds, number of seeds per ribbon, and geometric arrangement of ribbons.

[Treatment of transformed refractory migraine with intravenous dihydroergotamine].

In this work we present our experience with a seven-day protocol of i.v. dihydroergotamine (DHE) in the treatment of 6 patients (7 treatments) suffering from intractable transformed migraine. All of them were admitted to hospital and treated for one week with a protocol which included DHE doses between 0.5-1 mg/8 h. One patient did not respond. The remaining 6 became free of pain in under 48 hours after the beginning of treatment. This positive effect remained for between 15 days and 3 months. All patients experienced adverse events; however, these were slight and ceased when the DHE dose was reduced. DHE is an effective and quick option for the short-term treatment of patients with severe transformed migraine resistant to other medications.

[Evaluation of radiation doses during radiological tests].

The purpose of this document is to provide radiologists with a simple, but realistic means of determining the individual dose delivered to a patient during a radiological examination both in the region under investigation and at any other particularly sensitive organs. Fourteen types of examinations were considered corresponding to those most frequently carried out in France. The choice of examinations and methods of taking the films approaches as closely as possible, the average situations, and the frequency of different techniques is influenced by the results of a national study of radiodiagnostic examinations carried out in France in 1982. In the first section, the influence on the radiation dose of varying different physical parameters and techniques is analysed, with an aim of defining the limits of validity of the presented dosimetric values and the possible adaptation of these values to any individual situation, which is slightly different from these considered in this study. The second section describes the model used for determining the absorbed dose presented in the tables, concerning each type of examination, as well as bibliographic references referring to methods and results of determining the dose. The suggested calculation model may be used as a base for dose estimation for other types of examination.
