[In vitro effect of rosoxacin on hospital bacteria. Results of a multicenter study].

This work reports a multicenter study of antibacterial activity of rosoxacin, a new antibacterial agent of the quinolone group. Enterobacteriaceae are very sensitive to rosoxacin (modal MIC 0,5 micrograms/ml); resistant strains are observed in all species, but more often among Serratia and Citrobacter. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is less sensitive with a maximum number of strains between 2 and 8 micrograms/ml, so it is nearly for Acinetobacter. Haemophilus are very sensitive, having MIC of 0,03 and 0,06 micrograms/ml. The spectrum of rosoxacin includes Gram positive bacteria, since the MIC of Staphylococci are similar to Enterobacteriaceae; Enterococci are less sensitive, the major part of the strains being inhibited by 4 and 8 micrograms/ml.

[Pulmonary mycobacteriosis due to Mycobacterium chelonei: a report on a new case (authors' transl)].

Mycobacterium chelonei is a saprophytic germ usually devoid of pathogenic activity. Over a period of about the last ten years, however, several cases have been reported, including twelve cases of bronchopulmonary affections, in which it has been the infecting organism. The radiographic appearance is in every respect similar to that observed in pulmonary tuberculosis. A positive diagnosis of infection due to this germ can be made by the absence of Kuch's bacillus the lack of therapeutic effect of antituberculous medication, a positive skin reaction to specific antigens, and positive Mycobacterium Chelonei cultures from biopsy specimens. A new case of this infection is reported.

[Passive haemagglutination test in serodiagnosis of syphilis. Survey of a one-year trial in a venereal diseases prophylactic center (author's transl)].

We report here a one-year study of the reliability of the Treponema pallidum Haemagglutination Test (TPHA) in the serological diagnosis of syphilis. By comparing TPHA data with the diagnosis based on a set of grouped criteria, we were able to determine TPHA accuracy. All studies were conducted at the Antivenereal Prophylactic Center, in Nice, France, on 1,775 sera. The grouped data consisted of:--Serological Test for Syphilis (STS) using cardiolipin antigen,--medical and epidemiological records;--two specific reactions; namely the Fluorescent Antibody Test (FTA) and the Treponema Immobilisation Test (TIT). Reliability is excellent in 98.58 p. 100: the TPHA either proves syphilis or eliminates this diagnosis. The TPHA was particularly useful in investigating "problem sera" for which there existed conflicts in the grouped data. The applicability of TPHA is limited, however, in that it has low sensitivity during early primary syphilis, and it cannot be used to monitor antibodies during treatment. Nevertheless, TPHA, based on a standard specific antigen, is assured of a high place among the tools of serological diagnosis of syphilis because of its high accuracy and sensitivity, its objective and easily read results, and the simplicity of its technique.
