[Clinical and pathologico-anatomic findings in the bovine uterus after cesarean section and their significance for fertility].

From the observations made on a great number of obstetrical operations partly in the blue-white cattle breed either in the clinic or in practice, the indications for caesarean section and the chances for post operative conception are discussed. Despite technically perfect and careful operation, still some complications, e.g. adhesions, which reduce the subsequent fertility, can hardly be prevented. About 75% of the cows bred again become pregnant and 9.7% of those pregnancies end in abortion. However, the possibilities of delivery and the survival rate for the dam and the fetus after caesarotomy are so high, that the fertility depressing factors are readily accepted. Nevertheless, further efforts should be made to overcome them.

[Diagnosis and treatment of Mycoplasma bovis mastitis (MbM) in dairy cows].

The diagnosis of Mycoplasma bovis mastitis (MbM) usually comes too late. Consequently the capital early symptoms are described for a probable diagnosis in order to enable prophylactic measures and to prevent ineffective expensive treatments and loss of time. Following a definite diagnosis of MbM by culture, a repeated application of the CMT milk test combined with bacteriological culture detects infected cows and they should be culled. All cows of exceptional breeding value can be treated by repeated intramammary infusions of specific antimycoplasma antibiotics with a fair chance of healing, by preference during the dryudder period.

Aetiology and pathogenesis of congenital torticollis and head scoliosis in the equine foetus.

In 214 cases of severe dystocia in mares, of which 141 (66 per cent) were Draught horses, deviation of the head and neck, with or without torticollis, malformed head and limbs were found to be the cause of dystocia. No evidence of a genetic lethal factor was found and torticollis was often combined with scoliosis of the head and, frequently, with malformation of one or more limbs. This is considered evidence of a common aetiology and pathogenesis of the syndrome of malformation. The malformations were found to be associated with an increased incidence of caudal and, particularly, transverse presentations. These findings are presented as evidence to support the hypothesis that, during the second half of pregnancy, the narrow tip of the uterine horns provides only limited space for the developing cranial half of the foetus. The surprisingly rapid and complete anatomical and functional recovery of severe malformations of the bones of the neck, head and limbs of surviving foals, born by caesarian section, is taken as further evidence that these malformations have no genetic basis, but originate from unfavourable intrauterine conditions.

Abnormalities, Multiple

Obstetrician's view of the physiology of equine parturition and dystocia.

The author reviews 40 years of clinical experience including more than 1000 cases of dystocia in mares of different breeds. The high incidence of stillbirth and perinatal mortality of the foal, severe lesions of the genital tract developing during foaling and in the early post partum period are discussed and suggestions made for their prevention and treatment. The advantages of partial embryotomy to avoid unnecessary caesarean sections are emphasised. Special attention is given to the causes of and approach to cases of prolonged gestation; to dystocia caused by retroversion of preparturient torsion of the uterus; and to transverse presentation developed from bicornual pregnancy, regarded as the most important indication for caesarean section. Recommendations are proposed to improve the results of caesarean section for the mare and foal.

The mature mid-cycle follicle in the mare.

Oestrogen and progesterone concentrations in blood and follicular fluid and blood levels of LH were determined in 426 mares at different stages of the oestrous cycle. Mature follicles occur at all stages of the cycle; they ovulate readily in early metoestrus, occasionally in late metoestrus and very rarely in dioestrus. Maturation of a mid-cycle follicle is associated with intermediate levels of LH, which are less than those found during oestrus. This lower level of LH together with a high level of progesterone are probably responsible for the failure of ovulation and regression of most of the mid-cycle mature follicles found in the mare.

[Immunofluorescence tests for the detection of antibodies against Corynebacterium pyogenes and streptococci in blood serum and vaginal mucus of cattle].

Bacteriological tests were applied to cattle with endometritis and vaginitis. Included were cervical mucus samples and immunofluorescence tests to detect in that mucus as well as in blood serum antibody to Corynebacterium pyogenes and Streptococcus haemolyticus. The results pointed at intensive contact of the animals with the above pathogens and to their frequent occurrence in cervical mucus of cattle afflicted with endometritis and vaginitis. They also supported the assumption of localised antibody formation in the sexual organs or female cattle.

Embryo transfer in cattle: an evaluation of the current situation.

A technique for the transcervical recovery of ova in cattle is described. The donors recipient pool consisted of 122 cows of different ages and 4 different breeds. Of these 102 cows were superovulated. For recovery of ova an apparatus consisting of a metal catheter glued to the inside of a 3-way Foley catheter was used. The technique used for embryo transfer was basically the same as for collecting the embryos. The 102 donors yielded at slaughter a total of 956 corpora lutea i.e. an average of 9,4 per cow. Of the ova released 294 or 30% were recovered on transcervical flushing of the uterus. 40% of the inovulated cows conceived. The future development of inovulation in cattle is discussed on the basis of the results recorded and on those previously documented.

Clinical and endocrinological aspects of induced parturition in multiparous sows.

Intramuscular administration of PGF2alpha or its analogue ICI 80996 at 110--112 days of gestation results in grouped parturition. The decrease of progesterone levels is interrupted by a temporary increase. During expulsion rather high values are obtained compared to the control group. Unconjugated oestrogens increase, reaching maximum values just before expulsion.
