A contribution to the study of fluoride excretion.

Three population groups (two of them consisting of school-going children) with a low content of fluoride in the drinking water have been used to investigate parameters influencing fluoride excretion. For the population living in an area contaminated by F-air pollution, there was no significant effect of age or sex from 3 to 17 years. For the population living in a non-contaminated area, there is an increase with age. The data are distributed according to log normal. To determine these excretion levels, first-morning samples were used and it is concluded that for population research (not necessarily for individuals) this is more practical than 24-h samples and yield reliable results. To correct for urine concentration, correlation with Ca2+, Cl- and creatinine were investigated. Low or insignificant correlations were obtained.

Vascular tumors induced by polyoma virus in pregnant rats.

Female R rats mated with an R male and inoculated in utero with polyoma virus after "fetectomy" developed tumors. These tumors originated in the uterus and were of fetal origin (visceral yolk sac). Histologically, they were hemangiomas or hemangiosarcomas. The latter were transplantable and grew in tissue culture. Infectious polyoma virus could not be isolated from the tumor cells kept as transplantable lines or cultured in vitro. However, the tumor cells were positive for the polyoma-specific surface antigen, polyoma tumor-specific transplantation antigen(s), and polyoma nuclear T antigen.

Inhibition by interferon of delayed-type hypersensitivity in the mouse.

The effect of interferon on delayed-type by persensitivity to picryl chloride and sheep erythrocytes was examined in the mouse. When administered to sensitized animals on the day before or the day of challenge, tissue culture interferon inhibited both the ear swelling induced by pieryl chloride and footpad swelling induced by sheep erythrocytes. Newcastle disease virus, when injected into sensitized If-1l or If-1h congenic mice a few hours before challenge, caused an inhibition of delayed-type hypersensitivity which could be related to the amount of serum interferon induced by the virus. These results indicate that interferon production may represent one of the factors responsible for the depression of cell-mediated immune reactions during virus infection.

Prolongation of allogeneic heart graft survival in the rat after implantation on portal vein.

In rats, heart allografts with venous drainage via the portal vein were performed and compared with similar grafts draining into the inferior vena cava. A new technique was developed using the complete thoracic descending aorta and ligation of all its branches. The descending thoracic aorta was anastomosed to the recipient's abdominal aorta below the left renal vein. The pulmonary artery was implanted on the portal vein in an end to side fashion. In two rat strain combinations the allograft survival time was significantly prolonged when compared to that of the control grafts with pulmonary-caval anastomosis. The presumed mechanism for this prolonged graft survival might be the sequestration or degradation of transplantation antigens in the liver during their first passage through this organ. In this way only a small amount of antigen reaches the systemic circulation.
