Patterns of line bisection in patients suffering from unilateral spatial neglect.

Thirteen patients suffering from Unilateral Spatial Neglect and 6 Right Brain Damaged Control Patients were tested on a line bisection task in order to verify peculiar patterns of error. Stimuli were arranged in order to avoid confounding the effects of line length and line position in the space. Two parameters of rightward displacement of setting point were used: 1) the distance of patient's setting point from actual line midpoint, and 2) the deduced left end-point of the line that patient took into account. Results showed that: 1) the rightward extension of lines did not lead to a consistent rightward displacement of setting point; 2) error significantly increased as lines extended more than 10 cm in the left hemispace; 3) the USN severity amplified the degradation of leftmost portion of stimuli until the deduced left endpoint of all space/length conditions was aligned on the left of patient's sagittal midplane. The interpretation of these results points to the particular arrangement of neurons directing attention on specific portions of the visual field.

Decoding paralinguistic signals: effect of semantic and prosodic cues on aphasics' comprehension.

A matching task between sentences voiced with joyful, angry, or sad intonation and pictures of facial expressions representing the same emotions is proposed to 27 aphasics and 20 normal subjects. Semantic contents are either meaningless, neutral, or affectively loaded. In the affective-meaning condition, content is redundant with prosody or conflicting with it. Results are 1. a greater number of nonprosodic choices in the aphasic group; 2. an identical influence of the congruence/conflict variable on aphasic and control subjects; 3. an identical influence of the semantic content of the conflict sentences on both groups. Aphasic impairment is interpreted as purely quantitative, since affective semantic content influences the decoding of the sentences.

[Initial clinical signs and results of surgical removal of cerebral arteriovenous malformations].

On the basis of 90 cerebral AVMs, the authors study clinical signs which show the AVM, before a dramatic bleeding. Such clinical signs are: benign subarachnoid hemorrhage or intracranial hypertension and, only for lobar AVMs, migraine, epileptic seizures, progressive neurological deficit. In such cases a misdiagnosis is avoided by CT Scan with contrast. In the second part, the authors show that the AVMs surgical removal gives better results than AVMs natural history studied over a 20 years period. Ten AVMs observed in deep coma died. Two surgical deaths are only observed out of 73 AVMs surgical removals. Out of 44 lobar AVMs totally removed, 37 show good results and seven disabilities. Out of 19 deep AVMs, 13 were totally removed and six partially. Such deep AVMs, especially AVMs of the corpus callosum or of lateral and third ventricles choroid plexus give excellent surgical results. The authors conclude that surgical removal is the safer treatment for the majority of AVMs (Acta neurol. belg., 1985, 85, 65-81).
