There are multiple relations between neurotic abnormal behavior and the incidence of functional vegetativ disorders and there are also correlations between such dysfunctions and blood sugar homoiostasis. In patients with functional vegetative dysorders and neurotic behavior we performed a glucose tolerance test and compared the results to a control group. In the group of patients with vegetative dysfunction and neurotic tendencies the oral glucose tolerance test was abnormal in 68.4 p.c. as compared to 21.3 p.c. in the control group. Several insulin antagonists which play a role in stress responses are discussed in the interpretation of these surprising results.

Adaptation processes in an acute stress situation were investigated an compared in young and elderly subjects. Insulin hypoglycemia was used to provoke stress. The behavior of the blood sugar after administration of 0.1 U/kg old insulin shows a marked hypoglycemic state after 30 minutes, both in the young and in the older subjects. The rise into the normal range occurs considerably quicker in the young than in the elderly. Adrenaline excretion is distinctly lowered in older people. Measurement of hydrocortisone excretion also shows a lower reaction level and a delayed onset in the elderly. Growth hormone analysis shows a smaller production in advanced age. It is consequently established that adaptation potential decreases in old age.

In an in vitro study, 10 gallbladders of adult pigs and 6 gallbladders of lambs, all removed immediately after slaughtering, were stimulated in a water bath by electric means to induce active contraction. Gallbladder emptying was followed by ultrasonography employing five measurement procedures: (1) gallbladder width, (2) longitudinal planimetry, (3) transverse planimetry, (4) ellipsoid method, and (5) sum of cylinders method. In an in vivo investigation, gallbladder emptying of 30 volunteers (12 healthy subjects, 18 diabetics) was evaluated in the same way after ingestion of a fatty meal. Gallbladder width was found to be unsuitable to estimate the decrease in gallbladder volume due to a nonlinear relation of the parameters. Longitudinal planimetry tended to be less valid than transverse planimetry in assessing gallbladder volume reduction. The most valid estimation of gallbladder volume decreases was obtained by the two three-dimensional procedures. However, in neither in vitro nor in vivo could a significant difference between the sum of cylinders method and the ellipsoid method in determining relative volume reduction be established. We conclude that a three-dimensional measurement procedure should be used for valid assessments of gallbladder motility. However, according to our data there is no advantage in using the time-consuming sum of cylinders method compared to the simple ellipsoid method.
The depolarization near-field scanning optical microscope allows for sub-wavelength optical resolution with uncoated optical fibre tips. We show by a simple thought experiment, by numerical solution of the Maxwell equations for a realistic geometry, and by direct experiments, that this novel apparatus images gradients of the dielectric function of a sample in the direction of the incident electric field vector. The near-field images obtained from experiment and theory agree well.
This report "presents major trends and changes in the urban system in Europe over the last thirty years (1960-1990). It examines the present state of urbanization and considers the cycles and dynamics of urban development, urban growth and urban decline and describes current and future issues of urban development in the twelve countries of the European Community, including the united Germany, and in Austria and Switzerland."
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of hyperthyroidism on antral myoelectrical activity, gastric emptying and dyspepsia in man. METHODOLOGY: Twenty-three patients with manifest hyperthyroidism and dyspepsia confirmed by a standardized protocol were studied by electrogastrography (EGG). The following EGG parameters were determined: dominant frequency (DF cycles per minute (cpm), DF (%) in the normal range (2-4 cpm)), bradygastria (< 2 cpm), tachygastria (4-10 cpm), dominant frequency instability coefficient (DFIC), and postprandial to fasting power ratio. Data were correlated to results obtained in 18 age- and gender-matched controls. In 10 patients, a control measurement was performed after antithyroid therapy. In addition, in 15 consecutive patients, EGG data were compared to gastric emptying of radionuclides recorded simultaneously (gamma camera). RESULTS: Hyperthyroid patients revealed a significant increase in preprandial DF, and in pre- and post-prandial tachygastrias compared to controls (3.3 cpm vs 3.1 cpm; 8.8% vs 3.5%; 12.3% vs 3.5%; p < 0.05). After antithyroid therapy, postprandial tachygastrias were reduced significantly. About 50% of the patients exhibited delayed gastric emptying compared to previously evaluated normal values (t 60 nuclide retention: > 68%). However, these patients did not differ in tachygastria and the other EGG parameters from those with normal gastric emptying (p > 0.05). Both EGG and radioscintigraphy did not correlate significantly with dyspepsia. CONCLUSIONS: Dyspeptic patients with hyperthyroidism frequently display tachygastria and delayed gastric emptying. However, tachygastria has no important effect on gastric motor activity in hyperthyroidism.
