The case of drug addiction which has made the diagnosis and treatment of chronic otitis media difficult was presented. The clinical course and treatment complicated by withdrawal symptoms were also discussed.
Using the root test, the relationship between the amount of lead in plant tissues and the level of the root growth inhibition was examined for twelve food plant species. 345 mg to 8152 mg Pb.kg-1 dry wt. inhibited root growth only by 5 to 36% as compared to the control. At least 96.6% of lead was bound in cells of root tips. Most of the lead was accumulated in cell walls, vacuoles and sometimes in dictyosomal vesicles. Lead accumulating in these cell compartments is separated from cell cytoplasm and therefore is no longer toxic for root cells. The results show that amounts of lead much bigger than those observed in the environment can now easily enter the food chain via plants. High tolerance to lead in plant roots is quite unfavourable for other members in the food chain, including man.
The aim of this study was to assess the remineralizing effect of an amine fluoride (AmF)- and stannous fluoride (SnF2)-containing toothpaste and mouthrinse on exposed root surfaces. A total of 44 adults participated in the 20-week, double-blind study and were grouped as follows: (1) 20 participants (mean age 45.7 years) used an AmF/SnF2 experimental toothpaste plus AmF/SnF2 (Meridol) mouthwash, and (2) 24 participants (mean age 48.8 years) used an NaF-containing toothpaste and mouthrinse. Root caries index (RCI) and root surface scores were determined by a modified method of Katz (J Dent Res, 1984). RCI mean values showed decreases of approximately 47% in the AmF/SnF2 group, and 10% in the NaF group. With respect to root caries scores, the number of persons with decreased softened (non-carious) surfaces between the baseline and control examinations was statistically significant (p less than 0.05) in the AmF/SnF2 group but not significant in the NaF group. A statistically significant difference (p less than 0.05) in the results of the groups favored the AmF/SnF2 subgroup. Thus, the data point to a possible remineralizing effect of topically applied AmF/SnF2 on softened root caries surfaces.
UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to assess the effect of amine fluoride (AmF)--stannous fluoride (SnF2) containing toothpaste and mouthrinsing on dental plaque accumulation and gingivitis. The examinations were performed on two groups of 20 (using AmF/SnF2)-, resp. 24 (using NaF) participants. The mean age was 45.6-, resp. 48.8 years. The duration of the study was five months. Toothbrushing was performed with standardized (multi-effect) toothbrushes, and after it mouthrinsing twice a day. Dental plaque was scored with the Plaque Index of Silness and Löe (1964) and gingivitis was assessed by the modified Sulcus Bleeding Index (Mühlemann and Son 1971) Plaque Index mean values showed a significant decreased in both groups (p less than 0.01). The reduction in the AmF/SnF2 group was more pronounced (63.7%) than in the NaF group (39.3%). The Sulcus-Bleeding Index mean values decreased also significantly in both groups (p less than 0.01). The decrease in the AmF/SnF2 group was 56.5% and in the NaF group 39.0%. CONCLUSION: in the course of a five-month's period AmF/SnF2 containing toothpaste and mouthrinsing had better clinical effect on plaque accumulation and gingivitis than NaF containing toothpaste and mouthrinsing.

The position of the connective tissue attachment was determined by Ramfjord's method in subjects aged 20-29 and 40-49 years. In the determination four surfaces of all remaining incisors, canines, and premolars were considered. A defect of the connective tissue attachment was found in about 95% of the analysed dental surfaces in subjects aged 40-49 years. The frequency of occurrence of these defects varied depending on the type dental surface.

In 20 subjects aged 20-29 years the position of the connective tissue attachment was determined and the atrophy of the alveolar process bone was assessed by means of an analysis of pantomograms. The radiological image of the paradontium was compared with the result of clinical examination. It was found that radiological diagnosis by means of pantomography may be a valuable supplementation of clinical examination in case of advanced parodontitis with loss of connective tissue attachment by at least 6 mm.
Two cases of the congenital methemoglobinemia in children due to the deficiency of NADH-dependent methemoglobin reductase in erythrocytes. These children were referred to the Cardiological Ward at the Child Health Centre with suspected cyanotic heart defect. Cardiological examinations excluded heart defect but an increased blood methemoglobin level and decreased activity of NADH-dependent methemoglobin reductase were found, that caused methemoglobinemia. Methylene blue and vitamin C diminished cyanosis. These cases advocate inclusion of methemoglobinemia into differential diagnosis of cyanotic disorders especially if there is no evident pathology in cardio-vascular system.
28 cavernoscopies were carried out in 26 patients. Complete or partial removal of mycetomas was achieved in 18 patients with 20 caverns. Under aerobic conditions Aspergillus fumigatus was cultured from the 28 removed mycetomas in 22 cases (78.6%) and bacterial organisms in 20 (71.4%). Bacteria were isolated from mycetomas that had demonstrable A. fumigatus organisms as well as from those that did not have them. In all infected mycetomas Gram negative rods were cultured, in only 4 cases Gram (+) cocci were found. Only in two cases of mycetomas under anaerobic conditions Gram (+) cocci were cultured. In most patients the organism could be demonstrated in sputum as well as in mycetomas. In 18 patients the pathogenic organism disappeared from sputum after removal of mycetomas. Also following removal of aspergillomas a decrease of sputum production was noted and it changed its character from purulent to mucoid.
The effect of a preventive program was studied in Polish schoolchildren. The study was carried out in a group of 133 children, aged 10-12 yr, divided into a test and a control group. Children in the test group were initially treated with temporary restorations and were then given oral health education and preventive treatment by a specially trained chairside assistant. The preventive treatment included prophylaxis and topical fluoride treatment and was carried out at least 10 times a year. The mean 3-yr DFS increment was 1.7 in the test and 10.9 in the control group. The salivary counts of mutans streptococci were similar in test and control group at baseline and after 1 and 2 yr. At the examination after 3 yr, a difference was established between the two groups.

The oral health and factors related to oral health were surveyed in 168 schoolchildren, aged 10-12 years, attending one school in Warsaw. The children were examined for dental caries and gingival status, dental plaque and salivary Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus counts. An interview on dietary habits and use of fluoridated toothpaste was also performed. The results showed a mean DMFT of 4.7 in the sample. Gingival Index 1 and Plaque Index 3 were median scores for the majority of the children. S. mutans was demonstrated in 94% of the children and high numbers were found in 15%. Lactobacillus sp. were present in all examined children, with high counts in 56% of the subjects. The interview revealed that most of the children eat five or six times per day and consume candies or cakes each day. Fluoridated toothpaste was not used regularly by any of the children. In conclusion this study shows a high prevalence of dental disease and an unfavorable combination of etiologic factors.
Cervical root stimulation (CRS) was compared with conventional EMG, nerve conduction, and late response studies in 34 patients with possible cervical radiculopathy. Cervical roots were stimulated by monopolar needles inserted into paraspinal muscles, recording compound muscle action potentials in biceps, triceps, and abductor digiti minimi muscles. In 18 patients with clinical evidence of radiculopathy, EMG was abnormal in 11 (61%), but CRS was abnormal in all 18. Of 16 patients with symptoms but no signs of radiculopathy, EMG was abnormal in 5 (31%) and CRS was abnormal in 9 (56%).
