[Endoscopic administration of OK-432 in gastric cancer].

This paper describes the morphological and histological changes of gastric cancer following OK-432 injection into and around the lesion under endoscopic observation. Of 10 cases of unresectable gastric cancer, 7 revealed morphological changes and 3 a significant reduction of tumor size. In one of these cases, all the tumor cells disappeared. In 7 cases of resected gastric cancer preceded preoperatively by OK-432 administration, no obvious morphological changes were observed. However, histologically, marked infiltration of inflammatory cells was observed at the site of injection, especially in the submucosal layer. In regional lymph nodes, a lymphocyte predominance pattern which may have resulted from augmentation of T-cell activity was observed in many cases. The results suggested that local OK-432 injection therapy does not have such a marked direct effect on tumor cells, but may be useful as a means of prevention against invasion into the submucosal layer and regional lymph nodes.

Mutagenicity in Salmonella assays of cyclohexane epoxide derivatives.

15 Cyclohexane epoxide derivatives were synthesized and compared for direct mutagenicity and bacterial toxicity using Salmonella typhimurium strain TA100 in the liquid suspension and spot-test version of the Ames procedure. While no general correlations could be established for position and stereochemistry of the hydroxylated derivatives, an increase in mutagenicity was noted for the presence of electron-withdrawing groups and unsaturation in conjugation with the oxirane groups.

Reflex responses of single salivatory neurons to stimulation of trigeminal sensory branches in the cat.

Responses of 71 single salivatory neurons, identified by antidromic spikes evoked by stimulation of the chorda tympani, were tested to stimulation of the ipsilateral infraorbital (IO), inferior alveolar (IA) and lingual nerves (LN) in the cat. Fifty-one neurons responded with spike potentials to stimulation of one or more of these nerves (responsive type, R), while the remaining 20 neurons did not respond to stimulation of any of them (non-responsive type, NR). Thirty-three R neurons were activated by stimulation of all of the 3 trigeminal afferent branches, while 12 neurons responded with spikes to stimulation of only one branch, usually of LN. Reflex spike responses appeared with a latency of 5.6-14.6 ms to LN stimulation, 6.4-15.7 ms to IO stimulation and 6.0-26.0 ms to IA stimulation. Impulses of both A beta and A delta afferent fibres of the trigeminal nerve were found to be effective for activation of salivatory neurons.
