Effect of defoliant (butiphose) on morpho-physiological properties and enzyme systems of natural membranes.

Butiphose (Tributyltritiophosphate, (C4H9S)3PO) a commonly used defoliant in cotton growing regions of USSR, caused extensive alterations in morphological features of erythrocyte and nuclear membranes and affected the permeability properties of rat liver mitochondrial membrane. It disrupted Ca2+ transport system and other energy dependent processes in mitochondria. A reduction in the activity of cytochrome-c-oxidase and NAD.H-oxidase was also observed.

Interruption of persistent ductus arteriosus with metal clips.

Persistent ductus arteriosus was interrupted with Hemoclips (Weck) in two children, 4 and 6 years of age, and four premature infants. After follow-up of 14 to 19 months, there were no recurrences. The use of Hemoclips to interrupt the persistent ductus arteriosus appears to be a safe procedure.

Effects of concurrent administration of monensin and selenium on erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity and liver selenium concentration in broiler chickens.

Different toxic doses of selenium and monensin preparations were administered to broiler chickens. The two substances were given by oral route, alone or concurrently, for variable periods. Erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity was found to be elevated after the administration of the drugs. This increase was considerably higher when selenium and monensin were administered concurrently, indicating the occurrence of strong interaction between them. Administration of selenium led to a rapid increase in the liver selenium concentration. This increase, in turn, was enhanced by concurrent application of monensin. Monensin given alone did not have any significant effect on the changes of liver selenium concentration. Further results suggest that administration of monensin increases erythrocyte GSH-Px activity, even in the absence of supplemental selenium or during increased liver selenium concentration.

Effects of oral administration of toxic levels of lead and selenium upon concentration of different elements in the liver of broiler chicks.

Broiler chicks fed lead or selenium for varying periods were later intoxicated with two levels of either of these elements. In this way different groups of chicks were exposed to lead or selenium alone or a combination of these two. Lead caused increased liver concentrations of lead and iron. Selenium administration increased liver selenium and iron levels while liver copper decreased. Concurrent administration of lead and selenium greatly enhanced the accumulation of both elements in the liver and increased the liver iron. Lead partially counteracted the depression of liver copper caused by selenium. Mortality due to concurrent exposure to lead and selenium was lower when vitamin E was added to the feed. Body weights were markedly suppressed by selenium. The concurrent administration of lead partially alleviated the growth depression caused by selenium. Selenium fed birds had increased relative weights of liver and heart but this increase was of lesser degree in birds given both elements.

Diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis in the leg by using colour coded duplex sonography.

BACKGROUND: Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is regarded rare [not readable: see text] Asia. There is no documentation of the incidence of DVT in Pakistan. Clinical diagnosis of Deep Vein Thrombosis is inaccurate. Venography is the most reliable method of diagnosis, but it has several disadvantages. Many non-invasive diagnostic methods have therefore been developed in the past decade. Of these only duplex sonography has comparable accuracy. METHODS: We studied 100 cases of suspected DVT by using colour coded duplex sonography. We report the results of a prospective study in patients with suspected deep vein thrombosis evaluated by both colour coded Doppler sonography and venography. CONCLUSION: We conclude that colour coded duplex sonography is a highly accurate, simple, non-invasive method for detecting femoropopliteal thrombosis. Additional venography is not necessary. Its value in diagnosing isolated calf vein thrombosis remains to be established.

Prevalence of mental health problems in acne patients.

BACKGROUND: Acne is the most common of all skin diseases. The condition affects young people at the time when they are undergoing maximum social and physical change and can produce significant psychological scarring. This study was done to determine the Mental Health problem in Patients suffering from acne and to determine significant difference of mental health problems in acne patients in comparison to seborrhic dermatitis patients as a control group. METHODS: 50 subjects with acne and 50 with seborrhic skin problems (13-25 yrs age) were included in this study through Psychiatry OPD of Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar. The period of study was from March 1998 to August 1998. The patients were assessed for psychiatric problems by using WHO Guide to mental health in primary care ICD 10 chapter V primary care. The statistical significance was determined by chi square. RESULTS: The data shows that out of 50 acne patients 19 (38%) were suffering from Depression, with a female predominance. The control group (seborrhic) presented lower prevalence of Depression i.e. 57% in females. Similarly Anxiety problem in particular social anxiety were overall more in acne group (34%) as compared to seborrhea group (10%). A statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups indicating that depression and social anxiety was more in the acne group. A consistent finding in the study over six months depicted the difference between gender i.e. more females presenting with depression. Total Depressed Patients were 19, while total with suicidal Thoughts were 4 (21%). CONCLUSION: The importance of this study is to highlight depression among such patients.
