Effects of vitamin C on liver enzymes and biochemical parameters in rats anesthetized with halothane.

Halothane is an important human and veterinary anesthetic, which produces free radicals during biotransformation. Occasionally, these free radicals may cause hepatic injury, especially in case of multiple halothane exposures over short periods. Vitamin C may protect cellular lipids and lipoproteins against oxidative damage by the free radicals. This study investigated the effects of vitamin C on liver enzymes and other biochemical parameters in rats anesthetized with halothane. One group of rats was used as a control, and saline (0.9% NaCl) was injected intraperitoneally into these animals as a placebo. The second group of rats was used as an anesthesia control group and was only anesthetized by halothane for 2 h. The third group was anesthetized by halothane and injected vitamin C intraperitoneally. Activities of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase enzymes were significantly increased (p < 0.05, p < 0.01, p < 0.05, respectively) by halothane anesthesia, but decreased (p < 0.05, p < 0.05, p < 0.05, respectively) with administration of vitamin C. Concentrations of triglycerides, cholesterol, total bilirubin and creatinine were statistically affected (p < 0.05, p < 0.01, p < 0.05, and p < 0.01, respectively) by injection of vitamin C. Values of erythrocyte counts, packet cell volumes, hemoglobin concentration, leukocyte counts, rates of neutrophils and lymphocytes were significantly affected (p < 0.01, p < 0.05, p < 0.05, p < 0.01, p < 0.001 and p < 0.01, respectively) by halothane anesthesia. The values of erythrocyte counts, leukocyte counts, neutrophil and lymphocyte rates were significantly decreased (p < 0.05, p < 0.05, p < 0.05, p < 0.01 and p < 0.01, respectively) with administration of vitamin C. Based upon these results, vitamin C may play an important role in the prevention of hepatic cellular injury inflicted by halothane anesthesia.

Seroprevalence of enzootic bovine leukosis in Trakya district (Marmara region) in Turkey.

In this study, 481 cattle belonging to 77 farms from nine localities in Trakya district in the Marmara region of Turkey were blood sampled and serologically tested for enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL). Antibodies to bovine leukosis virus (BLV) were detected in 51 cattle sera (11%) belonging to nine farms in five localities. Cattle tested were mostly female Holstein or Brown Swiss of ages ranging between 18 months and 10 years. Analysis of the relationships between age, breed or sex and seropositivity to EBL in seropositive herds indicated no significant associations (p > 0.05). The relationship between seropositivity and haematological changes was also studied, and seropositive cattle had higher lymphocyte percentage and lower neutrophil percentage than seronegative cattle (p < 0.001).

Sibling reflux: a dual center retrospective study.

PURPOSE: Siblings of index patients with vesicoureteral reflux are known to have an increased incidence of reflux. Previous reports may be biased due to significantly more female siblings undergoing screening. In addition, it has been suggested that screening is unnecessary in older children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of probands with vesicoureteral reflux. A total of 422 families comprising 622 siblings was identified at our centers from 1985 to 1994. Of the 255 boys and 277 girls newborn to 16 years old (mean age 6.2 years) 85% were evaluated. Almost 43% of the probands (225) were older than 7 years. RESULTS: Vesicoureteral reflux was noted in 144 siblings (52 boys and 92 girls, 27%). The majority had low grade reflux but in 111 (77%) maximum reflux grade was II or III. Reflux nephropathy was demonstrated on a nuclear renal scan in 18 of the 132 tested siblings (13.6%). In all of these children reflux was grades II to IV and 27% were older than 10 years. CONCLUSIONS: When vesicoureteral reflux is discovered, all siblings should be considered for screening. The evaluation of older siblings remains controversial, since they comprise only a small fraction of all siblings with reflux but may have a significant portion of reflux nephropathy. There was a 27% overall incidence with a 33% rate in girls. The incidence of reflux in siblings decreased after age 7 years but reflux nephropathy was identified even in the older children.

Intrinsic auricular muscles and auricular form.

Plical folding of the cartilagenous ear plate is largely determined by the insertions of four extrinsic and seven intrinsic auricular muscles. Dissection of ten external auricles from anencephalic fetuses of six or more months' gestation was done. The transversus and obliquus auricular muscles found in association with the antihelical fold were evaluated. Four auricles were of normal form and had the transversus and obliquus auricular muscles with typical insertions in the cartilage. Six of the ten auricles had a simplified form, with no antihelical folding in five and minimal development in one. Fibers from neither the transversus nor the obliquus auricular muscles were identified in these six ears. The results of these dissections strongly suggest that antihelical folding is determined by the presence of functioning transversus and obliquus auriculae muscles. Similarly it is proposed that normal folding of the auricular cartilage is dependent on the presence of functioning auricular muscles. In evaluation of the child with absence of normal ear form, these findings suggest that the unusual shape is due to abnormal placement and/or function of the intrinsic and extrinsic auricular muscles. These changes may be a subtle sign of neuromuscular weakness, abnormal muscle insertion or absence of muscle.
