[Primary and secondary prevention of cancer in Israel].

Prevention and early detection of cancer are basic for decreasing cancer morbidity and improving survival rates. The Israel Cancer Association is active in the field of primary and secondary prevention of cancer and promotes a variety of projects in these fields.

Preparation of suspensions of Hyalomma excavatum ticks infected with Theileria annulata.

Partially engorged adult Hyalomma excavatum ticks infected with Theileria annulata were reared for the preparation of an infective suspension. About 6000 partially engorged infected adults were obtained from 420 non-infective adult ticks. The entire cycle required about 4 months. Six rabbits were used for the production of the fully engorged females. The larvae were fed on 180 gerbils, the nymphs on 17 infected calves and the partially fed adults on 22 goats, 7 sheep and 7 rabbits The adult ticks did not show any host preference.

Stapedectomy for otosclerosis with malleus fixation.

Malleus fixation, in addition to stapes fixation, presents a perplexing surgical problem. Should the incus replacement prosthesis procedure be performed or only a stapedectomy? The hearing results of a stapedectomy alone in 45 cases with both stapes and malleus fixation are 70% within 10 dB and 84% within 20 dB of the preoperative bone conduction hearing level.

An incus replacement prosthesis. The ossicle cup.

To achieve better hearing after incus replacement surgery, the ossicle-cup prosthesis is introduced. This prosthesis incorporates part of a Teflon Robinson's stapes prosthesis into the body of an incus. The ossicle-cup prosthesis has a dynamic joint with the stapes capitulum, as well as a variable height above the stapes. Preliminary hearing results of 45 cases show air-bone gap closure of 67% within 10 dB and 98% within 20 dB.
