Establishing a nurse-managed wellness clinic in a predominantly older African American inner-city high rise: an advanced practice nursing project.

With funding from a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development contract awarded to a private university, advanced practice nurse faculty established a nurse-managed wellness clinic in an apartment building populated by predominantly African American older people. Ethnographic methods were used to ensure culturally competent care. The clinic provided nursing, pharmacy, and health sciences faculty and students with community-focused clinical experiences as interdisciplinary team members.

A model for collaborative nursing research.

A nursing research center based upon collaboration can provide partners, practice, and academia with essential services for conducting and disseminating research. The design and implementation of such a center is discussed. The center's activities provide advantages for both settings, especially considering the present pressure in the health care industry for increased productivity and efficiency.

Critical incident stress debriefings for crisis management in post-traumatic stress disorders.

Critical incident stress debriefings (CISDs) are a form of crisis management for rescuers such as police officers, fire-fighters and others involved in rescue efforts during natural disasters. This article describes a qualitative evaluation study of one police department's CISD implementation. Participant observation and semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten police officers involved in violent incidents. Results indicated that CISD was perceived as helpful by the officers in alleviating the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder they experienced after the violent incidents.

Application of the skill acquisition model to the teaching of psychotherapy.

The variables in the Skill Acquisition Model (Dreyfus & Dreyfus, 1988) were used to order observations made in a graduate student clinical supervisory group. Components, perspective, decision, and commitment are the variables and are discussed as they relate to learning beginning skills in the psychotherapy process.

Research note: parallel reactions in rape victims and rape researchers.

In a recent study, several nurse researchers assisted in a case record review on 1,215 rape crisis center records to determine demographic predicators of sexual abuse. Despite the relatively impersonal nature of the method used in collection of data, researchers experienced highly subjective responses to the often sketchy case records both during and after the study. Some of the reactions reported by data collectors included: anger, dreams, fear of physical injury, and sleep disorders. These responses closely parallel those reported in the literature on rape victims. This research note (1) describes the reactions of the five different data collectors, (2) compares these reactions to those reported for rape victims, (3) suggests some implications for those engaged in research on potentially distressing topics, and (4) offers suggestions on how to best prepare data collectors and others for research in emotionally charged areas.

The accountability of incest offenders.

Child victims of incest further victimization if offenders are not brought to justice. Cultural factors that inhibit the reporting of offenders are discussed. The work of Prescott House, Jefferson County, Alabama, an interview site for child victims of incest, is described. All those concerned with child abuse in a community should collaborate to find and prosecute offenders.
