Meptazinol and morphine compared: a study using systolic time intervals.

Changes in systolic time intervals following the administration of either morphine (0.1 mg/kg) or meptazinol (1 mg/kg) were studied in 12 patients admitted to hospital for intra-abdominal operations. The changes in these indices of cardiac performance were small. However, in 5 of the 6 patients who received morphine, the changes were in a direction suggesting negative inotropism, whereas the changes following meptazinol (6 patients) consistently suggested an improved ventricular performance.

Plasma levels and cardiovascular effect of nitroglycerin in pregnant sheep.

The cardiovascular effects and blood levels of intravenous nitroglycerin in mother and foetus were studied in normotensive and hypertensive ewes. Although nitroglycerin produced a reduction in uterine blood flow following a decrease in blood pressure, there was little if any incidence of adverse effects in the foetus. Nitroglycerin was detected in all but two samples of foetal arterial blood but the foetal/maternal artery ratio was only 0.04. Nitroglycerin merits further evaluation for the treatment of acute hypertensive episodes in the preeclamptic patient.

Tobramycin and neuromuscular transmission in the rat isolated phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparation.

The effects of different concentrations of tobramycin, streptomycin, neomycin and gentamicin on the rat isolated phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparation are reported. Streptomycin, neomycin and gentamicin produced dose-dependent neuromuscular blockade. Tobramycin increased the muscle response at high concentrations (6.4 X 10(-4) - 2.6 X 10(-2) mol litre-1, but had no detectable effect when used in therapeutically recommended concentrations.
