Observation of new states decaying into Lambda(c)(+)Kappa(-)pi(+) and Lambda(c)(+)Kappa(0)/(s)pi(-).

We report the first observation of two charmed strange baryons that decay into Lambda(c)(+)Kappa(-)pi(+). The broader of the two states is measured to have a mass of 2978.5+/-2.1+/-2.0 MeV/c2 and a width of 43.5+/-7.5+/-7.0 MeV/c2. The mass and width of the narrow state are measured to be 3076.7+/-0.9+/-0.5 MeV/c;{2} and 6.2+/-1.2+/-0.8 MeV/c2, respectively. We also perform a search for the isospin partner states that decay into Lambda(c)(+)Kappa(0)/(s)pi(-) and observe a significant signal at the mass of 3082.8+/-1.8+/-1.5 MeV/c2. The data used for this analysis were accumulated at or near the Upsilon(4S) resonance, using the Belle detector at the e+ e- asymmetric-energy collider KEKB. The integrated luminosity of the data sample used is 461.5 fb(-1).

Evidence for B-->eta'pi and improved measurements for B-->eta'K.

We report evidence for the exclusive two-body charmless hadronic B meson decay B-->eta'pi, and improved measurements of B-->eta'K. The results are obtained from a data sample of 386x10(6) BB pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We measure B(B+-->eta'pi+)=[1.76(-0.62)(+0.67)(stat)(-0.14)(+0.15)(syst)]x10(-6) and B(B0-->eta'pi0)=[2.79(-0.96)(+1.02)(stat)(-0.34)(+0.25)(syst)]x10(-6). We also find the ratio of B(B+-->eta'K+)/B(B0-->eta'K0)=1.17+/-0.08(stat)+/-0.03(syst) and measure the direct CP asymmetries for the charged modes.

Measurement of the branching fraction, polarization, and asymmetry for decays, and determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa phase.

We have measured the branching fraction , longitudinal polarization fraction f(L), and CP asymmetry coefficients A and S for B(0) --> rho(+) rho(-) decays with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+) e(-) collider using 253 Fb(-1) of data. We obtain B = [22.8 +/- 3.8(stat)(+2.3)(-2.6)(syst)] x 10(-6), f(L) = 0.941 (+0.034)(-0.040)(stat) +/- 0.030(syst). A = 0.00 +/- 0.30(stat) +/- 0.09(syst) and S = 0.08 +/- 0.09(syst). These values are used to constrain the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa phase ; the solution consistent with the standard model is phi(2) = (88 +/- 17) degrees or 59 degrees < phi(2) < 115 degrees at 90% C.L.

Sindbis virus replicon particles encoding calreticulin linked to a tumor antigen generate long-term tumor-specific immunity.

Alphavirus vectors have emerged as a promising strategy for the development of cancer vaccines and gene therapy applications. In this study, we used the replication-defective vaccine vector SIN replicon particles from a new packaging cell line (PCL) to develop SIN replicon particles encoding calreticulin (CRT) linked to a model tumor antigen, human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) E7 protein. The linkage of CRT to E7 in SIN replicon particles resulted in a significant increase in E7-specific CD8(+) T-cell precursors and a strong antitumor effect against E7-expressing tumors in vaccinated mice. SINrep5-CRT/E7 replicon particles enhanced presentation of E7 through the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I pathway by infecting dendritic cells (DCs) directly and pulsing DCs with lysates of cells infected by SINrep5-CRT/E7 replicons. Vaccination of immunocompromised (BALB/c nu/nu) mice with SINrep5-CRT/E7 replicon particles also generated significant reduction of lung tumor nodules, suggesting that antiangiogenesis may contribute to the antitumor effect of SINrep5-CRT/E7 replicon particles. Furthermore, SINrep5-CRT/E7 replicon particles generated long-term in vivo tumor protection effects and antigen-specific memory immunities. We concluded that the CRT strategy used in the context of SIN replicon particles facilitated the generation of a highly effective vaccine for cancer prophylaxis and immunotherapy.

Improved constraints on D0-D0 mixing in D0 --> K+ pi- decays from the Belle detector.

We report the results of a search for D0-D0 mixing in D0 --> K+ pi- decays based on 400 fb(-1) of data accumulated by the Belle detector at KEKB. Both assuming CP conservation and allowing for CP violation, we fit the decay-time distribution for the mixing parameters x and y, as well as for the parameter R(D), the ratio of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decays to Cabibbo-favored decays. The 95% confidence level region in the (x'2,y') plane is obtained using a frequentist method. Assuming CP conservation, we find x'2 < 0.72 x 10(-3) and -9.9 x 10(-3) < y' < 6.8 x 10(-3) at the 95% confidence level; these are the most stringent constraints on the mixing parameters to date. The no-mixing point (0,0) has a confidence level of 3.9%. Assuming no mixing, we measure R(D) = (0.377 +/- 0.008 +/- 0.005)%.

Observation of a chi(c2)' candidate in gamma gamma --> DD production at belle.

We report on a search for new resonant states in the process gamma gamma --> DD. A candidate C-even charmonium state is observed in the vicinity of 3.93 GeV/c2. The production rate and the angular distribution in the gamma gamma center-of-mass frame suggest that this state is the previously unobserved chi(c2)', the 2(3)P2 charmonium state.

Cytokine-induced prostaglandin E2 production and cyclooxygenase-2 expression in dental pulp cells: downstream calcium signalling via activation of prostaglandin EP receptor.

AIM: To determine whether (i) proinflammatory cytokines stimulate prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) production and cyclooxygenase (COX) gene expression in dental pulp cells, and (ii) pulp cells that express different prostaglandin E(2) receptor (EP) isoforms and their activation by PGE(2) leads to downstream Ca(2+) signalling. METHODOLOGY: Cultured human dental pulp cells were exposed to interleukin (IL)-1beta and tumour necrotic factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). The expression of COX-1 and COX-2 was measured with reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The production of PGE(2) was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Expression of prostaglandin EP receptor isoforms was studied by RT-PCR, whereas fura-2 fluorescence was used to measure calcium mobilization. The Kruskal-Wallis test and Wilcoxon sum rank test with Bonferroni correction were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Interleukin-1beta and TNF-alpha stimulate PGE(2) production of human dental pulp cells (P < 0.05). IL-1beta stimulated the COX-2 but not COX-1 mRNA expression. Pulp cells express mainly EP2, EP3 and EP1 receptors as analysed by RT-PCR. PGE(2) (0.25-2 micromol L(-1)) stimulated the Ca(2+) mobilization as indicated by increase in fura-2 fluorescence. CONCLUSIONS: Interleukin-1beta and TNF-alpha may stimulate PGE(2) production in dental pulp cells. Activation of prostaglandin EP receptors in dental pulp cells by PGE(2) may induce Ca(2+) signalling to regulate cellular biological activity during inflammation.

Observation of B+ --> plambdagamma.

We report the first observation of the radiative hyperonic B decay B+ --> plambdagamma, using a 140 fb(-1) data sample recorded on upsilom(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e+e- collider. The measured branching fraction is [symbol: see text](B+ --> plambdagamma) = (2.16(+0.58)(-0.53) +/- 0.20) x 10(-6). We examine its M(plambda) distribution and observe a peak near threshold. This feature is expected by the short-distance b --> sgamma transition. A search for B+ --> pepsilon0gamma yields no significant signal, and we set a 90% confidence-level upper limit on the branching fraction of [symbol: see textB+ --> pepsilon0gamma <4.6 x 10(-6).

Evidence for B0 --> D+ D- and observation of B- --> D0D- and B- -->D0D*- decays.

We report evidence for B(0) --> D(0)D(-) and the first observation of the decay modes B(-) --> D(0)D(-) and B(-) --> D(0)D(*-) based on a sample of 152 x 10(6) BB events collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. The branching fractions for B(0) --> D(+) D(-), B--->D(0)D(-), and B--> D(0)D(*-) are found to be (1.91 +/- 0.51 +/- 0.30) x10(-4), (4.83 +/- 0.78 +/- 0.58) x 10(-4), and (4.57 +/- 0.71 +/- 0.56) x 10(-4), respectively. Charge asymmetries in the B---> D(0)D(-) and B(-) --> D(0)D(*-) channels are consistent with zero.

Measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in B(0)-->K(0)(S)pi(0)gamma decays.

We present a new measurement of CP-violation parameters in B(0)-->K(0)(S)pi(0)gamma decay based on a sample of 275 x 10(6) BB pairs collected at the Gamma(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. One of the B mesons is fully reconstructed in the B(0)-->K(0)(S)pi(0)gamma decay. The flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its decay products. CP-violation parameters are obtained from the asymmetry in the distribution of the proper time intervals between the two B decays. We obtain SK(0)(S)(pi(0)gamma) = -0.58(+0.46)(-0.38)(stat) +/- 0.11(syst) and AK(0)(S)(pi(0)gamma) = +0.03 +/- 0.34(stat) +/- 0.11(syst), for the K(0)(S)pi(0) invariant mass covering the full range up to 1.8 GeV/c2. We also measure the CP-violation parameters for the case B(0)-->K(*0)(-->K(0)(S)pi(0))gamma and obtain S(K(*0)gamma) = -0.79(+0.63)(-0.50)(stat) +/- 0.10(syst) for A(K(*0)gamma) fixed at 0.

Measurement of polarization and triple-product correlations in B-->phiK* decays.

We present measurements of decay amplitudes and triple-product correlations in B-->phiK* decays based on 253 fb(-1) of data recorded at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) storage ring. The decay amplitudes for the three different helicity states are determined from the angular distributions of final-state particles. The longitudinal polarization amplitudes are found to be 0.45 +/- 0.05 +/- 0.02 for B0-->phiK(*0) and 0.52 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.03 for B+ -->phiK(*+) decays. CP- and T-odd CP-violating triple-product asymmetries are measured to be consistent with zero.

Observation of a near-threshold omegaJ/psi mass enhancement in exclusive B-->KomegaJ/psi decays.

We report the observation of a near-threshold enhancement in the omegaJ/psi invariant mass distribution for exclusive B-->KomegaJ/psi decays. The results are obtained from a 253 fb(-1) data sample that contains 275 x 10(6) BB pairs that were collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e(+)e(-) collider. The statistical significance of the omegaJ/psi mass enhancement is estimated to be greater than 8sigma.

Observation of B+-->K1(1270)+gamma.

We report the observation of the radiative decay B+-->K1(1270)(+) gamma using a data sample of 140 fb(-1) taken at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. We find the branching fraction to be B(B+-->K1(1270)(+)gamma)=(4.3+/-0.9(stat.)+/-0.9(syst.))x10(-5) with a significance of 7.3sigma. We find no significant signal for B+-->K1(1400)(+)gamma and set an upper limit B(B+-->K1(1400)(+)gamma)<1.5 x 10(-5) at the 90% confidence level. We also measure inclusive branching fractions for B+-->K+pi+pi-gamma and B0-->K0pi+pi-gamma in the mass range 1 GeV/c(2)<M(K+(0)pi+pi-)<2 GeV/c(2).

Activation of CD44 facilitates DNA repair in T-cell lymphoma but has differential effects on apoptosis induced by chemotherapeutic agents and ionizing radiation.

Expression of CD44s (standard form) in malignant lymphoma is a poor indicator of survival. To investigate whether activation of CD44s can protect from cell death, this study compared the extent of apoptosis induced by chemotherapeutic agents and ionizing radiation (IR) on T-lymphoma cell lines in the presence or absence of adherent hyaluronan and monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs). Growth in the presence of adherent ligands enhanced apoptosis induced by dexamethasone (Dex), but protected cells from epirubicin-induced apoptosis. In IR-induced apoptosis, mouse lymphoma cells had resistance against apoptosis when treated with hyaluronan (HA), although acute cell death reached the same plateau regardless of treatment with adherent MoAbs in human lymphoma cell line. However, the post-irradiated repopulation of lymphoma cells was strikingly accelerated in those treated with CD44 adherent ligands. This repopulation process correlated with the remarkable upregulation of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), which is a protein involved in DNA repair. Unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS), a measure of DNA repair, was consistently enhanced in CD44s-stimulated cells after exposure to radiation. The results suggest that the poor prognostic indication of CD44 expression is more a consequence of enhanced DNA repair following genotoxic damage than of direct resistance to apoptosis.

Evidence for direct CP violation in B0-->K+pi- decays.

We report evidence for direct CP violation in the decay B0-->K+pi(-) with 253 fb(-1) of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. Using 275x10(6) BB pairs we observe a B-->K+/-pi(-/+) signal with 2140+/-53 events. The measured CP violating asymmetry is A(CP)(K+pi(-))=-0.101+/-0.025(stat)+/-0.005(syst), corresponding to a significance of 3.9sigma including systematics. We also search for CP violation in the decays B+-->K+pi(0) and B+-->pi(+)pi(0). The measured CP violating asymmetries are A(CP)(K+pi(0))=0.04+/-0.05(stat)+/-0.02(syst) and A(CP)(pi(+)pi(0))=-0.02+/-0.10(stat)+/-0.01(syst), corresponding to the intervals -0.05<A(CP)(K+pi(0))<0.13 and -0.18<A(CP)(pi(+)pi(0))<0.14 at 90% confidence level.

Evidence for B+-->omegal+nu.

We have searched for the decay B+-->omegal(+)nu (l=e or mu) in 78 fb(-1) of Upsilon(4S) data (85x10(6)BB events) accumulated with the Belle detector. The final state is fully reconstructed using the omega decay into pi(+)pi(-)pi(0), combined with detector hermeticity to estimate the neutrino momentum. A signal of 414+/-125 events is found in the data, corresponding to a branching fraction of (1.3+/-0.4+/-0.2+/-0.3)x10(-4), where the first two errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The third error reflects the estimated form-factor uncertainty.

Measurement of the CP asymmetry in B-->Xs gamma.

Direct CP violation in the b-->sgamma process is a sensitive probe of physics beyond the standard model. We report a measurement of the CP asymmetry in B-->X(s)gamma, where the hadronic recoil system X(s) is reconstructed using a pseudoreconstruction technique. In this approach there is negligible contamination from b-->dgamma decays, which are expected to have a much larger CP asymmetry. We find A(CP)=0.002+/-0.050(stat)+/-0.030(syst) for B-->X(s)gamma events having recoil mass smaller than 2.1 GeV/c(2). The analysis is based on a data sample of 140 fb(-1) recorded at the upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) storage ring.
