Comparative genomic hybridization in extramammary Paget's disease.

BACKGROUND: Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is a distinct skin cancer of unknown histogenesis. Data from genome-wide surveys for chromosomal aberrations in EMPD are limited. OBJECTIVES: To identify chromosomal aberrations that are present in EMPD. METHODS: Fifteen cases of EMPD were analysed by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). We used pooled DNA CGH, instead of studying a single sample. In addition, immunohistochemistry was performed for detection of androgen receptor (AR). RESULTS: The most recurrent change was amplification at chromosomes Xcent-q21 and 19, and loss at 10q24-qter. In addition, expression of AR, located in chromosome X, was found in six cases. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that AR may play a role in EMPD tumorigenesis.

Linear basaloid follicular hamartoma on the Blaschko's line of the face.

We report a 5-year-old girl with localized basaloid follicular hamartoma. The lesion consisted of a linear, hypopigmented, atrophic patch on the right lateral side of nose. Of great interest is that the linear distribution of lesion may follow the Blaschko's line of the face.

Comparative genomic hybridization in epithelioid sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of unknown histogenesis. Data on genome-wide surveys for chromosomal aberrations in epithelioid sarcoma are limited. OBJECTIVES: To investigate genetic aberrations in epithelioid sarcoma. METHODS: We analysed seven cases of epithelioid sarcoma (classic type, three cases and proximal type, four cases) by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), and correlated findings with the results of additional immunohistochemical study. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: CGH analysis showed DNA copy number changes at one to five different genomic sites in six of seven cases (86%). The majority of the changes were gains. The most frequent gain was at 22q (six cases). Other recurrent changes include gains of 12q24-qter (four cases), 17 (four cases), and 5q32-qter (three cases). High-level homology was seen in chromosomal aberration in both types. In addition, expression of interleukin-2 receptorbeta, located in 22q, was revealed by immunohistochemical method in six cases with gain of 22q, suggesting it may play a role in epithelioid sarcoma tumorigenesis.

Oncocytic carcinoma arising in submandibular gland with immunohistochemical observations and review of the literature.

We report a case of oncocytic carcinoma arising in submandibular gland. The tumour occurred in the left submandibular gland of an 82-year-old Japanese man. Histologically, the tumour was mostly composed of large cells with eosinophilic granules in the cytoplasm and they were arranged in the solid sheets, islands with duct-like structure and cords. The tumour cells had aggressively invaded muscles and perineural tissues, and cervical lymphatic metastasis was frequently observed. Histochemically, the tumour cells were strongly positive for phosphotungstic acid-hematoxylin (PTAH) stain, and we diagnosed this malignant tumour as oncocytic carcinoma. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells reacted positively for cytokeratin 7, 8, 19, epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), alpha-1-antichymotrypsin and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), but negative for cytokeratin 13, 14, smooth muscle actin (HHF35) and S-100 protein (S-100). Tumour was diagnosed as oncocytic carcinoma in submandibular gland. Its characteristics are discussed in term of its histopathological and immunohistochemical features.

Characteristics of cutaneous lymphomas in Korea.

The clinicopathologic characteristics of malignant lymphomas vary according to geography. The aim of this study was to determine the relative frequency of cutaneous lymphomas and to examine the clinical relevance of the WHO classification in Korean cases of cutaneous lymphoma. The Korean Dermatopathology Research Group conducted a clinicopathologic review of a nationwide collection of 80 cutaneous lymphomas, diagnosed at 23 institutes over a recent 3-year period. The clinical records, haematoxylin & eosin-stained slides and immunohistochemical stains from 80 patients with malignant lymphomas of the skin were reviewed. In our study, the most frequent cutaneous lymphoma was mycosis fungoides. Compared with Western countries, Korea had higher rates of NK/T cell lymphoma and subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma and a much lower rate of B-cell lymphoma. The occurrence rates for various subtypes of malignant lymphoma in Korea are distinct from those in Western countries. The EORTC classification is not fully appropriate in dealing with Korean cases of cutaneous lymphoma, because NK/T cell lymphoma is not included in the EORTC classification for cutaneous lymphoma.
