[Foodborne infections and intoxications in Poland in 2003].

A total of 20 221 bacterial foodborne infections and intoxications were registered in 2003 (incidence 52.9/100 000 population). These illnesses were less incident in 2003, compared both to 2002 figure (26 734 cases; incidence 69.9) and the median 1998-2001 (26 902 cases; incidence 69.6). Unlike bacterial infections, the incidence of viral foodborne infections increased in the recent years (2003--21.10 vs. 2002--17.30 and median 1998-2001 6.85). The parasitic foodborne infections did not change much during the recent years. A total of 78 cases of mushroom poisonings were reported (incidence 0.2) in 2003, compared to 66 cases in 2002 (incidence 0.17) and a median of 223 cases in 1998-2001 (incidence 0.6). The incidence of foodborne infections and intoxications was higher in the age group 0-4 years, compared to other age groups and in urban areas, compared to rural areas. A total of 230 foodborne and waterborne outbreaks involving 3816 cases were reported in 2003 (in Poland only outbreaks involving 4 persons or more were reported). The most prevalent etiological factors in outbreaks were Salmonella strains (63.6% of cases),Staphylococcus aureus (10.0% of cases) and Klebsiella strains (1.4% of cases). The most prevalent Salmonella strain were S. Enteritidis (89.3%) and S. Hadar (5.0%). The main vehicle of foodborne and waterborne outbreaks were meals prepared from various (> 2) raw materials of animal sources (29.2% of cases), egg meals (27.6%) and meats (7.2%). Of the places of food contamination, the most prevalent were own apartments (26.1% of outbreaks), food producing farms (10.6%), and restaurants (4.9%). One death was attributed to an outbreak of unknown etiology.

[Rabies in Poland in 2003].

In Poland 399 cases of animal rabies were reported in 2003. Mass oral vaccination of wild animals against rabies, which was introduced in 1993, seems to show a positive impact on the epizootic situation of rabies in Poland. In 2003 we observed about three-fold decrease in number of animal rabies cases. The outbreak of animal rabies, which started in 2001 in Wielkopolskie voivodeship, was still present. About 42% of rabies cases were reported from this province. Moreover sources of wild and domestic animal rabies are present in the north-east, east, and south-east of the country. Out of 7 155 persons vaccinated in Poland against rabies, 519 (7%) were bitten by or had contact with a rabid animal. Main reason for vaccination against rabies was exposure to an animal category C--rabies not excluded (5 790 cases, 81%) or category D--animals healthy at the moment of an exposition (846 cases, 12%).

[Human trichinellosis in Poland in 2003].

The total number of 40 cases of human trichinellosis was reported in Poland in 2003. Out of 40 cases 33 were notified from 6 outbreaks. In each outbreak the boar meat was the source of infections. The presence of Trichinella endemic areas in the north, central and east part of the country still determines the necessity of careful meat survey on Trichinella sp.

[Rabies in Poland in 2002].

In Poland in 2002, one case of human rabies was reported. There is no information about bitemark of the person with rabies and the person has not vaccinated. Mass oral vaccination of wild animals against rabies, which was introduced in 1993, seems to show a positive impact on the epizootic situation of rabies in Poland. In 2002 year we observed more than two-fold decrease in number of animal rabies cases. The outbreak of animal rabies, which started in 2001 year in Wielkopolskie voivodeship was still present. Moreover sources of wild and domestic animal rabies are present on the north-east, east, and south-east of the country. Out of 8,239 persons vaccinated in Poland against rabies, 1,179 (14%) were bitten by or were in contact with a rabid animal. Main reason for vaccination against rabies was exposure to an animal category C--rabies not excluded (6,071 cases, 74%) or category D--animals healthy at the moment of an exposition (989 cases, 12%).

[Epidemiologic analysis of human Leptospirosis in Poland in 1995-2002. I. Clinical features and laboratory diagnosis].

The aim of the study was to formulate the case definition of Leptospirosis for surveillance in Poland. There were also discussed the laboratory criteria appropriate for epidemiological situation of leptospirosis in our country. The study based on statistical data and information from 66 epidemiological investigation cards of leptospira cases reported in Poland between 1995 and 2002. We analyzed the course of the disease, clinical symptoms as well as the status of laboratory confirmation.

[Rabies in Poland in 2001].

In Poland in 2001, no case of human rabies was reported. Mass oral vaccination of wild animals against rabies, which was introduced in 1993, seems to show a positive impact on the epizootic situation of rabies in Poland. However, this year is the second one when we observed an increase in number of animal rabies cases. This year outbreak of animal rabies starts in Wielkopolskie voivodeship where we observed six-fold increase of animal rabies cases. Moreover sources of wild and domestic animal rabies are present on the north-east, east, and south-east of the country. Out of 9210 persons vaccinated in Poland against rabies, 3080 (33%) were bitten by or were in contact with a rabid animal. Main reason for vaccination against rabies was exposure to an animal category C--rabies not excluded (6747 cases, 73%) or category D--animals healthy at the moment of an exposition (1147 cases, 12%).

[Vaccination against rabies in Poland].

The data on anti-rabies vaccination in Poland in the last fifteen years are presented. In general, 89,019 people were vaccinated against rabies in Poland in the years 1986-2000, among them 580 after deep bite by rabid animal and 4814 after deep bite by an animal suspected of having rabies (III category of risk according to WHO). Among the patients with the III category exposition only a fraction were administered anti-rabies serum (12% of patients with deep bite by rabid animal), but this practice was becoming more frequent in recent years. 73% of patients were given vaccine after contact with domestic animals (dogs or cats), 9% after contact with wild foxes, which are the main reservoir of rabies in Poland. No cases of uneffective vaccination were observed. The preventive vaccination was sporadic and limited to persons with high professional risk of infection.

[Rabies in Poland in 2000].

In Poland in 2000, one case of human rabies was reported. It has been the first case of human rabies since 1986. The person with rabies was bitten by cat and has not received post-exposure treatment. Mass oral vaccination of wild animals against rabies which was introduced in 1993, showed a positive impact on the epizootic situation of rabies in Poland. However, we observed two-fold increase of animal rabies cases this year. Sources of wild and domestic animal rabies are present on the north-east, east, and south-east parts of the country, uncovered by oral vaccination. Out of 9,210 persons vaccinated in Poland against rabies, 2,587 (19%) were bitten by or were in contact with a rabid animals. Main reason for vaccination against rabies were contacts with animals category C (rabies not excluded, 5,741 cases; 62%) or category D (animals healthy during the exposition, 882 cases; 10%).
