[Oncological care according Alfred Schütz].

The study was realized among oncological nurses in their daily work routine and aimed to understand these professionals' subjective action, starting from their relation with patients, adopting a phenomenological reference framework based on the ideas of Alfred Schütz. The question: what does working in oncological care mean to you? Please describe, was used to collect statements, which were analyzed and clarified the typical action of a nurse caregiver in this daily routine. The study revealed that oncological care implies dealing with humans in a fragile situation; requires a relationship of affectivity; is care delivery that entails the genesis of professional burnout. Care delivery in oncology is highly complex, requiring a professional competence that goes beyond the technical-scientific sphere. Nursing professionals need to seek strategies which enable them to face the fatigue they are submitted to in their work.

[Living with a hospitalized adolescent].

This study aimed to understand the experience of parents living with a hospitalized adolescent. Fifteen parents of hospitalized adolescents were interviewed from August to October of 2002. Data were analyzed through Martin Heidegger's phenomenological approach. Four themes were identified: the impact of the illness on the family, the feelings of the family members and the adaptation to the hospital world, religiousness and the presence of friends in the process of coping with hospitalization; changes in the adolescent. The results showed the importance of seeing the adolescent and his/her family as a being there, being-in-the-world and being-in-the-world-with-others.

[Understanding the seriously ill patient and his family at the domiciliary reality].

The purpose of this study is to understand the reality of living with a seriously ill patient, from the point of view of the carer family member. We have contacted families who cared for seriously ill family members at home. Our intent was to understand the essence of the meaning of this situation for the carer family member. This was a qualitative study that relied on the theoretical and methodological framework of phenomenology. Thematic categories emerged from the careful analysis of testimonies of the carer family member, pointing to the essence of the day-to-day experience of providing this care.

[Women facing abortion: an existential approach].

This work aims at revealing the meaning of abortion in the view of women who have experienced it. For this purpose, the author used the Methodology of Phenomenological Investigation, which enabled a comprehensive analysis of the accounts collected. Data were gathered by interviewing twelve hospitalized women. The following questions were used: "What's the meaning of this experience to you? Can you describe it to me? The convergence of their accounts was analyzed and this enabled the creation of thematic categories. Such categories point out the essence of these women's experience and may provide guidelines for the development of assistance policies that would meet their specific needs. The results enlighten important aspects associated with sadness, loss, physiological and existential pain, loneliness, hospitalization discomfort, guilt or fear of being considered guilty, concern with their bodies and the intentionality of their consciences beginning to give importance to contraceptive methods. Their desire to review their own life projects also emerges.

[Living with pain: an existential focus].

In the routine of a hospital, during my nursing practice of providing care to patients with pain, it was shown to me as reaching beyond a biological sphere included in an existential dimension. Something in this experience disturbed me and I felt the need to understand these people suffering from pain, asking how they understand their pain and what is the meaning of experiencing painful chronic situations. In the attempt to find a way to obtain such understanding, I searched for some ideas stemming from phenomenology. Then, I interviewed the subjects individually based on the central question: "How is your experience with pain? Tell me about this". After the analysis, I was able to understand that pain is a way to narrow the horizon of possibilities and transformations in existence. It is not only the physical body that is ill, but also life is affected in its various dimensions, fundamentally with regard to the family, work and self-relation world.

[Facets of amputation -- a first approximation].

When participating in the project "The theme of the death as a way of access to the scientific initiation", I had the opportunity of approaching the phenomenon of death in its various facets. This contact provoked questionnings regarding amputation and how it was represented by those who experienced it, since it is considered a loss, similarly to death. Through scientific literature it was possible to understand the subject from different points of view, especially from the philosophical view of Merleau Ponty. It was observed that there was a lack of knowledge on the part of the nursing professionals. Thus, this study considers the perspective of those who experience amputation. In this sense, phenomenology may indicate a way of comprehending this phenomenon.

[Bioethical focus in the scientific production of nurses: characterization and analysis].

Bioethics raises ethical questions inherent to life, stimulated by biomedical and technological advances. Nursing has taken an interest in bioethical studies with the appearance of the first ethical studies based on gender relations. Here we undertake a quantitative-qualitative study of the scientific production of nurses in Brazil into Bioethics. The bibliographical survey considered postgraduate studies through CEPEn catalogs and articles published in national Nursing journals between 1990 and 2002. Reading and analysis of the material revealed that bioethical studies carried out by nurses are principally focused on the nursing professional. Production is seen to be sparse, with post-graduate studies containing the most examples.
