Replantation and transplantation following avulsion of two maxillary incisors.

Here we describe replantation and transplantation as a treatment conducted in a 16-year-old patient following a bicycle accident. An avulsed left central incisor in maxilla was replanted after extra-oral root canal treatment, and the lost right central incisor of the maxilla was replaced by a left lateral incisor of the mandible in the region of the fracture fissure. Follow-up examination at 34 months showed validity of treatment, although slight evidence of replacement resorption in the transplanted and replanted teeth was revealed.

[Iron and manganese in selected herbs and herbal-fruit teas].

The aim of this study was the determination iron and manganese contents in selected herbs, herbal-fruit teas and their water extracts. The samples were mineralized at temperature of 450 degrees C. The iron and manganese contents were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) directly from the mineralizates using SOLAAR M5 appliance produced by a US-based Thermo Elemental. The iron contents in dry herbs ranged, at average, from 97.66 to 348.65 microg/g and from 48.95 to 118.40 microg/g in herbal-fruit teas, the manganese contents from 43.25 to 604.80 microg/g in herbs and from 106.75 to 197.00 microg/g in herbal-fruit teas. The iron and manganese contents in dry herbs were comparable to results obtained by authors of the other papers. Infusions and decoctions of the examined herbsand herbal-fruit teas contain the amounts of these elements that do not harm the health and may constitute an additional source of iron and manganese for the human organism.

[Examination of nickel and chromium contents in selected herbs, herbal fruit teas and their infusions].

The aim of this study was to determine the contents of nickel and chromium (the trace elements that are necessary for the human organism only in specified amounts) in selected dry herbs, herbal-fruit teas and their water extracts. This examination was expected to answer the question whether infusions or decoctions may constitute the additional source of these elements, or whether the amounts of nickel and chromium included in them may be dangerous for the human organism. The samples were dry mineralized at the temperature of 450 degrees C. Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) was performed using SOLAAR M5 appliance produced by a US-based Thermo Elemental company; nickel contents were determined from the organic phase, and chromium directly from the mineralisate. Nickel contents ranged on average from 0.56 microg/g to 2.68 microg/g in herbs and from 0.99 microg/g to 1.70 microg/g in herbal fruit teas. On average 40.0% to 82.5% of the amount present in dry, raw material passed into the infusions. The determined amounts of chromium ranged from 0.57 microg/g to 1.36 microg/g in herbs, and from 0.47 microg/g to 1.17 microg/g in herbal fruit teas (average values). The maximum extraction of this element into the infusion or decoction equaled 85.0%. The contents of nickel and chromium in the examined dry herb samples were comparable to results obtained by authors of the other papers. Infusions or decoctions of the examined herbs and herbal fruit teas contain the amounts of these elements that do not harm health and may constitute an additional source of nickel and chromium for the human organism.

[The influence of carcinogenesis in the oral cavity on the level of zinc, copper and iron in serum].

Samples of blood serum originating from the patients with squamous cell carcinoma of various parts of the oral cavity (carcinoma planoepitheliale spinocellulare: mucosae buccae, fundi oris, linguae, palati molli) were analyzed for presence of some microelements (zinc, copper and iron) using the AAS method. The findings were compared to amounts of these elements in serum of healthy persons (control samples). Significant differences among groups (with cancer and control) were qualified using nonparametric U-Mann Whitney test. The mean contents of all the analyzed microelements in serum of persons with cancer were higher as compared with controls but statistically significant differences were only in case of copper and iron.

Bone mineral content of the mandible and spine in ovariectomized rats with estrogen deficiency.

The aim of this study was to assess the bone mineral content of the mandible and spine in rats with estrogen deficiency after ovariectomy. Female rats were divided into the following groups: CL--control, SH--sham-operated, OV--after ovariectomy, OVH--after ovariectomy receiving 17beta-estradiol in three different doses (1.25, 12.5, 125 microg) during seven weeks. After the experiment densitometric examinations of the mandible and spine were made using DEXA method and there was measured bone mineral content (BMC). The results of the examination indicate that estrogen deficiency after ovariectomy leads to decreasing of BMC index of the examined bones, and densitometric examinations allow to carefully evaluate changes in the mineral part of the examined bones.

[Study of estrogen deficiency impact on manganese levels in teeth and mandible of rats after ovariectomy].

Deficiency of the estrogens occurring after menopause or ovariectomy leads to osteopenia and osteoporosis. It was confirmed by noninvasion examinations of bones--skeleton, maxilla mandible and teeth. Demineralization of the hard tissues were connected with loss of calcium and phosphorus, however the role of microelements is not completely known (for example role of Mn). The aim of the study was an attempt of explanation of manganese behave in the structure of hard tissues of masticatory system when the level of estrogens was decreased. Experiment was realized on Wistar female rats. They were divided into seven following groups: CL--control, SH--sham operated, OV--after ovariectomy, OVO--ovariectomized which administered "oleum pro injectione", OVH1--OVH3--ovariectomized which administered 17 beta-estradiol in three doses: 1.25 micrograms, 12.5 micrograms, 125.0 micrograms (dose on the rat) twice a week. After ovariectomy the level of manganese in teeth as well as in mandible decreased in compared with control group. Differences were statistically significant. Administration of 17 beta-estradiol of ovariectomized female rats caused increase of manganese content inconsiderable. These results may suggest that ovarian estrogens play an important role in mineralization of bones and teeth and in prophylaxis of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

[Assessment of the alkaline (ALP) and acid phosphatase (ACP) in the blood serum of rats during experimental postmenopausal osteoporosis].

The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity of alkaline (ALP) and acid (ACP) phosphatase in the blood serum of rats after ovariectomy and with estrogen replacement therapy. The relationship between mandible and spine bone mineral density (BMD) and parameters of bone remodeling was also estimated. The concentration of serum total alkaline and acid phosphatase was higher in the rats with estrogen deficiency, and statistically lower in rats administering 17 beta-estradiol. ALP and ACP levels were correlated significantly negative with mandible and spine BMD. Carried out examinations confirmed increasing bone resorption during experimental postmenopausal osteoporosis.

New aspects of osteoporosis--a literature review.

On the basis of the literature the author describes some aspects of osteoporosis (pathogenesis, diagnosis, prophylaxis, and treatment). He focuses attention on the new factors which take part in this process such as: markers of bone turnover, local factors--cytokines and genetics. He also notices that osteoporosis can concern maxilla and mandible, therefore, maxillofacial surgeon should know this disease.

Kynurenic acid in human saliva--does it influence oral microflora?

Kynurenic acid (KYNA) is an endogenous antagonist of alpha7 nicotinic receptors and all ionotropic glutamate receptors. Its neuroprotective activity has been suggested. In this study, the presence of KYNAin human saliva and its potential bactericidal role was investigated. KYNAwas found in all samples of human saliva with mean concentration of 3.4 nM. The concentration of KYNA in saliva obtained from patients with odontogenic abscesses was 3.5 times higher than in healthy subjects. We have shown that the human gingival fibroblasts produce KYNAand an inflammatory stimulant, lipopolysaccharide, enhanced its synthesis in vitro. The bactericidal effect of KYNA was also presented. We hypothesize that KYNA may contribute to the control of oral microflora.
