Circulating endothelial progenitor cells after kidney transplantation.

Circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) promote vascular repair and maintain integrity of the endothelial monolayer. Reduced EPCs number has been associated with endothelial dysfunction in various cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular disease risk is higher in renal transplant patients (RT) than the general population. We studied EPCs number and proliferation in RT, and examined the association with other cardiovascular risk factors such as reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and LDL cholesterol. EPCs concentration was determined in 94 RT and 39 control subjects (C) by flow cytometry. EPCs proliferation was also studied after 7 days in culture. EPCs concentration was significantly reduced in RT versus C (median 33.5 [5-177] vs. 53 [9-257] EPCs/10(5) PMN cells, p=0.006). EPCs proliferation was also reduced in RT versus C (mean+/-SD; 372.7+/-229.3 vs. 539.8+/-291.3 EPCs x field, p=0.003). In multiple regression analysis, GFR, HDL, LDL and body weight were independent predictors of EPCs concentration in RT (r2=0.25, p<0.001). EPCs number is reduced in RT, particularly in patients with reduced GFR. Moreover, EPCs from RT studied in vitro, showed reduced proliferation, which is a sign of functional impairment. These alterations may be involved in increased cardiovascular risk of RT.

Study time effects in recognition memory.

We empirically tested the assumption that study time increases recognition accuracy because the storage of information is better when study time is longer as Shiffrin and colleagues have reported, an assumption common to parallel models of recognition. In the present study with 123 subjects, we examined the effect of item strength on four measures: hit rate, false alarm rate, d', and beta, for a single-word recognition task with longer study times than those usually used in the literature. Analysis indicated significant increase for hit rate and d' and a decrease in false alarm rate, as one goes from weak to stronger study conditions, and a change in ln(beta) when study time is greater than 1 sec. These results suggest that familiarization is one, but not the only, factor underlying the strength-mirror effect.

Normative data on the familiarity and difficulty of 196 Spanish word fragments.

In this article, normative data on the familiarity and difficulty of 196 single-solution Spanish word fragments are presented. The database includes the following indices: difficulty, familiarity, frequency, number of meanings, number of letters given in the fragment, first and/or last letters given, and ratio of letters to blanks. A factor analysis was performed on difficulty, and two factors were obtained. Frequency, familiarity, and number of meanings loaded highly on the first factor, which we consider to measure lexical processes, whereas number of letters in the fragment, first and/or last letters given, and ratio of letters to blanks loaded highly on the second factor, which we judge to be determined by perceptual information. Regression analyses using factor scores as predictors showed that both factors accounted for a significant part of the completion probability scores. The full set of these norms may be downloaded from the Psychonomic Society Web archive at www.psychonomic.org/archive/.
