Order-disorder transition coupled with magnetic bistability in the ferricinium salt of a radical nickel dithiolene complex.

The ferricinium salt of the anionic, S = (1)/(2), dithiolene complex [Ni(tfadt)(2)](-) (where tfadt is the asymmetrically substituted 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylonitrile-1,2-dithiolate) crystallizes at room temperature (rt) into uniform chains of dithiolene complexes, separated by ferricinium cations. Both ionic entities are characterized by disorder affecting one CF(3) and one Cp moiety. Above 250 K, this compound displays a Curie-type behavior. At lower temperatures, two first-order transitions around 249 and 137 K are revealed by susceptibility measurements and the observation of hysteresis effects. Crystal structure determinations performed at 230 and 120 K show that the high-temperature transition is associated with an ordering of the CF(3) and Cp groups together with a dimerization of the anionic stacks that thus induces a drop of the susceptibility. The second, low-temperature transition leads to a tetramerization of these nickel dithiolene stacks now in a complete diamagnetic state while the remaining susceptibility originates from the sole ferricinium contribution. The first order character of the 249 K transition with its associated bistable behavior is likely correlated with the structural order-disorder transition, an original behavior in this class of materials where bistability is most often associated with a strengthening of interstack intermolecular interactions (hydrogen bonding, pi-pi interactions ...).

A series of complexes of the phosphorus-based TTF ligand o-P2 with the metal ions Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II), and Ag(I).

Reactions of 3,4-dimethyl-3',4'-bis(diphenylphosphino)tetrathiafulvalene, o-P2, with [BF(4)](-) salts of Fe(ii), Co(ii), Ni(II), Pd(II), and Pt(II) yield complexes of general formula [M(o-P2)(2)][BF(4)](2). Similar reactions between o-P2 and AgSbF(6) or AgPF(6) produced the salts [Ag(o-P2)(2)][X] where X = [SbF(6)](-) or [PF(6)](-). The resulting compounds were fully characterized by (1)H and (31)P{(1)H} NMR, infrared and electronic absorption spectroscopies, cyclic voltammetry, FAB-MS and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The paramagnetic Co(II) compound exhibits an S = 3/2 state with large spin-orbit coupling contribution at higher temperatures and an effective S' = 1/2 state below 20 K. Electrochemical studies of the compounds indicate that the two functionalized TTF ligands are not in electronic communication and that they essentially behave as isolated redox centers.

[CpNi(dithiolene)] (and diselenolene) neutral radical complexes.

Various preparations of the neutral radical [CpNi(dddt)] complex (dddt = 5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiin-2,3-dithiolate) were investigated with CpNi sources, [Cp2Ni], [Cp2Ni](BF4), [CpNi(CO)]2, and [CpNi(cod)](BF4), and dithiolene transfer sources, O=C(dddt), the naked dithiolate (dddt(2-)), the monoanion of square-planar Ni dithiolene complex (NBu4)[Ni(dddt)2], and the neutral complex [Ni(dddt)2]. The reaction of [CpNi(cod)](BF4) with (NBu4)[Ni(dddt)2] gave the highest yield for the preparation of [CpNi(dddt)] (86%). [CpNi(ddds)] (ddds = 5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiin-2,3-diselenolate), [CpNi(dsdt)] (dsdt = 5,6-dihydro-1,4-diselenin-2,3-dithiolate), [CpNi(bdt)] (bdt = 1,2-benzenedithiolate), and [CpNi(bds)] (bds = 1,2-benzenediselenolate) were synthesized by the reactions of [Cp2Ni] with the corresponding neutral Ni dithiolene complexes [Ni(ddds)2]2, [Ni(dsdt)2], [Ni(bdt)2], and [Ni(bds)2], respectively. The five, formally Ni(III), radical complexes oxidize and reduce reversibly. They exhibit, in the neutral state, a strong absorption in the NIR region, from 1000 nm in the dddt/ddds/dsdt series to 720 nm in the bdt/bds series with epsilon values between 2500 and 5000 M(-1) cm(-1). The molecular and solid state structures of the five complexes were determined by X-ray structure analyses. [CpNi(dddt)] and [CpNi(ddds)] are isostructural, while [CpNi(dsdt)] exhibits a closely related structure. Similarly, [CpNi(bdt)] and [CpNi(bds)] are also isostructural. Correlations between structural data and magnetic measurements show the presence of alternated spin chains in [CpNi(dddt)], [CpNi(ddds)], and [CpNi(dsdt)], while a remarkably strong antiferromagnetic interaction in [CpNi(bdt)] and [CpNi(bds)] is attributed to a Cp...Cp face-to-face sigma overlap, an original feature in organometallic radical complexes.

Fluorine segregation in crystalline materials: structural control and solid-state [2+2] cycloaddition in CF(3)-substituted tetrathiafulvalene derivatives.

The well-known influence of long perfluorinated chains on the structures and stability of amphiphilic molecules in liquid crystalline mesophases or mesoscopic micellar arrangements is evaluated here in the realm of crystalline materials based on rigid aromatic molecules bearing only a limited number of CF(3) moieties. Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives bearing one or two CF(3) groups, that is, (Z)- and (E)-(CF(3))(2)TTF ((Z)-1, (E)-1), EDT-TTF-CF(3) (2), and EDT-TTF(CF(3))(2) (3) (EDT=ethylenedithio) are prepared from the 1,3-dipolar reaction of methyl 4,4,4-trifluorotetrolate with ethylenetrithiocarbonate. The structures of neutral (Z)-1, (E)-1, 2, and 3 as indicated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements reveal the recurrent formation of layered structures with a strong segregation of the fluorinated moieties and formation of fluorous bilayers, attributed to the amphiphilic character of those TTF derivatives upon CF(3) functionalization, and without need for longer C(n)F(2n+1) (n>1) perfluorinated chains. The short intermolecular distance between outer C==C double bonds observed in the layered structure of (E)-1 allows a solid-state [2+2] photocyclization with formation of chiral dyads incorporating the characteristic cyclobutane ring. These dyads containing two dihydrotetrathiafulvalene moieties facing each other exhibit reversible oxidation to the mixed-valence radical cation state and organize in the solid-state into the same layered structures with fluorous bilayers.

Between Ni(mnt)2 and Ni(tfd)2 dithiolene complexes: the unsymmetrical 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylonitrile-1,2-dithiolate and its nickel complexes.

A novel 1,2-dithiolate ligand, that is, the 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylonitrile-1,2-dithiolate, abbreviated here as tfadt, is prepared from the corresponding cyclic dithiocarbonate. This ligand, substituted with both a CN and a CF(3) group, is compared with the well-known maleonitrile- and bis(trifluoromethyl)ethane-1,2-dithiolates. The preparation, electrochemical properties, and X-ray crystal structures of the square-planar nickel complexes, in both their dianionic diamagnetic [Ni(tfadt)(2)](2)(-) and their monoanionic paramagnetic [Ni(tfadt)(2)](*)(-) forms, are reported, as n-Bu(4)N(+), PPh(4)(+), and (18-crown-6)Na(+) salts, respectively. In the [(18-crown-6)Na](2)[Ni(tfadt)(2)] salt, each CN moiety of the [Ni(tfadt)(2)](2)(-) dianion is coordinated to a (18-crown-6)Na(+) cation through a CN...Na interaction [N...Na = 2.481(3) A], affording an "axle with wheels" model where two MeOH molecules act as axle caps. On the other hand, in [(18-crown-6)Na][Ni(tfadt)(2)], each (18-crown-6)Na(+) cation is coordinated on both sides by the CN groups of two monoanionic [Ni(tfadt)(2)](*)(-) complexes with N...Na(+) distances at 2.434(5) and 2.485(4) A, giving rise to heterobimetallic chains with alternating (18-crown-6)Na(+) and [Ni(tfadt)(2)](*)(-) ions. These two examples demonstrate the attractive ability of the CN moieties in the [Ni(tfadt)(2)](2)(-)(,)(*)(-) complexes to coordinate metallic cationic centers. The paramagnetic salts of the anionic [Ni(tfadt)(2)](*)(-) complex follow Curie-type law in the 2-300 K temperature range, indicating the absence of intermolecular magnetic interactions in the solid state. The complexes are found in their trans form in all crystal structures, while density functional theory calculations establish that both forms have essentially the same energy. A cis-trans interconversion process is observed by variable-temperature NMR on the dianionic [Ni(tfadt)(2)](2)(-) complex with a coalescence temperature T(c) of 260 K and a free energy of activation of 51-53 kJ mol(-)(1).

A family of oxo-chalcogenide molybdenum and tungsten complexes, (n-Bu4N)2[M2O2(mu-Q)2(1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate)2] (M = Mo, W; Q = S, Se): new synthetic entries, structure, and gas-phase behavior.

A new series of complexes with the general formula (n-Bu4N)2[M2O2(micro-Q)2(dmit)2] (where M = Mo, W; Q = S, Se; dmit = 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) have been prepared. Fragmentation of the trinuclear cluster (n-Bu4N)2[Mo3(micro3-S)(micro-S2)3(dmit)3] in the presence of triphenylphosphine (PPh3) gives the dinuclear compound (n-Bu4N)2[Mo2O2(micro-S)2(dmit)2] [(n-Bu4N)2[2]], which is formed via oxidation in air from the intermediate (n-Bu4N)2[Mo3(micro3-S)(micro-S)3(dmit)3] [(n-Bu4N)2[1]] complex. Ligand substitution of the molybdenum sulfur bridged [Mo2O2(micro-S)2(dimethylformamide)6]2+ dimer with the sodium salt of the dmit dithiolate also affords the dianionic compound (n-Bu4N)2[2]. The whole series, (n-Bu4N)2[Mo2O2(micro-Se)2(dmit)2] [(n-Bu4N)2[3]], (n-Bu4N)2[W2O2(micro-S)2(dmit)2] [(n-Bu4N)2[4]], (n-Bu4N)2[W2O2(micro-Se)2(dmit)2] [(n-Bu4N)2[5]], and (n-Bu4N)2[Mo2O2(micro-S)2(dmid)2] [(n-Bu4N)2[6]; dmid = 1,3-dithiole-2-one-4,5-dithiolate], has been synthesized by the excision of the polymeric (Mo3Q7Br4)x phases with PPh3 or 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)ethane in acetonitrile followed by the dithiolene incorporation and further degradation in air. Direct evidence of the presence of the intermediates with the formula [M3Q4(dmit)3]2- (M = Mo, W; Q = S, Se) has been obtained by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The crystal structures of (n-Bu4N)2[1], (PPh4)2[Mo2O2(micro-S)2(dmit)2] [(PPh4)2[2]; PPh4 = tetraphenylphosphonium], (n-Bu4N)2[2], (n-Bu4N)2[4], (PPh4)2[W2O2(micro-Se)2(dmit)2] [(PPh4)2[5]], and (n-Bu4N)2[6] have been determined. A detailed study of the gas-phase behavior for compounds (n-Bu4N)2[2-6] shows an identical fragmentation pathway for the whole family that consists of a partial breaking of the two dithiolene ligands followed by the dissociation of the dinuclear cluster.

Structure and magnetic properties of (meso-tetraphenylporphinato)manganese(III) bis(dithiolato)nickelates.

The crystal structures of [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2H(CN)]2} [MnTPP = (meso-tetraphenylporphinato)manganese(III)] and [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} have been determined. These salts possess trans-mu-coordination of S = 1/2 {Ni[S2C2H(CN)]2}*- and {Ni[S(2)C(2)(CN)(2)](2)}*- to Mn(III) and form parallel 1-D coordination polymer chains exhibiting nu(CN) at 2210 and 2200 and 2220 and 2212 cm(-1), respectively. The bis(dithiolato) monoanions are planar and bridge two cations with MnN distances of 2.339(16), and 2.394(3) A, respectively, which are comparable to related MnN distances observed for [MnTPP][TCNE].x(solvates). In addition, [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} {H2TP'P = meso-tetrakis[3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin] and [MnTP'P(OH2)]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} were prepared. The latter forms isolated paramagnetic ions. The room-temperature values of chiT for 1-D [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2H(CN)]2}, [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2}, and [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} are 2.55, 3.28, and 2.86 emu K/mol, respectively. Susceptibility (chi) measurements between 2 and 300 K reveal weak antiferromagnetic interactions with theta= -5.9 and -0.2 K for [MnTPP]{Ni[S(2)C(2)H(CN)](2)} and [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2}, respectively, and stronger antiferromagnetic coupling of -50 K for [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} from fits of chi(T) to the Curie-Weiss law. The 1-D intrachain coupling, J(intra), of [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2H(CN)]2} and [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} was determined from modeling chiT(T) by the Seiden expression (H = -2JSi.Sj) with J/kB = -8.00 K (-5.55 cm(-1); -0.65 meV) for [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2H(CN)]2}, J/kB = -3.00 K (-2.08 cm(-1); -0.25 meV) for [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2}, and J/kB = -122 K (-85 cm(-1)) for [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2}. These observed negative J(intra)/kB values are indicative of antiferromagnetic coupling. These materials order as ferrimagnets at 5.5, 2.3, and 8.0 K, for [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2H(CN)]2}, [MnTPP]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2}, and [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2}, respectively, based upon the temperature at which maximum in the 10 Hz chi'(T) data occurs. [MnTP'P]{Ni[S2C2(CN)2]2} has a coercivity of 17,700 Oe and remanent magnetizations of 7250 emu Oe/mol at 2 K and 17 Oe and 850 emu Oe/mol at 5 K; hence, upon cooling it goes from being a soft magnet to being a very hard magnet.

Chiral molecular metals: syntheses, structures, and properties of the AsF(6)(-) salts of racemic (+/-)-, (R)-, and (S)-tetrathiafulvalene-oxazoline derivatives.

A metallic behavior characterizes a first complete series of 2:1 AsF6- mixed-valence chiral salts of (R)-, (S)-, and racemic (+/-)-tetrathiafulvalene methyl-oxazoline derivatives. The enhanced conductivity of the pure enantiomeric salts, when compared with that of the racemic one, is the likely consequence of the structural disorder observed in the latter.

A series of neutral radical CpNi(dithiolene). complexes.

The heteroleptic neutral radical dithiolene complexes CpNi(dmit)., CpNi(dsit). and CpNi(dmid).(dmit=1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate; dsit=1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-diselenolate; dmid=1,3-dithiole-2-one-4,5-dithiolate) are obtained from the reaction of (Cp2Ni)BF4 with either (n-Bu4N)[Ni(dmit)2] and (n-Bu4N)[Ni(dmid)2] or PhSb(dmit) and PhSb(dsit), respectively. The three complexes reduce reversibly to the corresponding Ni(II) anions and oxidize reversibly to the cationic state. As deduced from DFT calculations performed on CpNi(dmit)., the SOMO of these complexes is essentially localized on the dithiolene moiety with little metal contribution. CpNi(dsit). is isostructural with CpNi(dmit). and crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1). In the solid-state structures of both CpNi(dmit). and CpNi(dsit)., molecules interact through a three-dimensional set of intermolecular interactions mediated by short SS, SeSe and SSe contacts, as confirmed from the temperature and field dependence of the magnetic susceptibility by the observation of an antiferromagnetic ground state below T(Neel)=27 K in CpNi(dmit)., 18 K in CpNi(dsit).. Finally, CpNi(dmid). crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Pnma. Molecules organize into uniform chains through the stacking of the dmid moieties in a sigma-type face-to-face overlap.

Homoleptic tris(dithiolene) and tetrakis(dithiolene) complexes of uranium(IV).

Reaction of UCl4 with 3 or 4 mol equiv of Na2dddt (dddt = 5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiine-2,3-dithiolate) in THF afforded the first example of a tetrakis(dithiolene) metal compound, [Na4(THF)8U(dddt)4](infinity) (1). The red crystals of 1 are composed of infinite zigzag chains in which Na2(micro-THF)3 fragments ensure the linking of Na2(THF)5U(dddt)4 moieties; the uranium atom is in a dodecahedral environment of eight sulfur atoms. Treatment of UCl4 with 3 mol equiv of Na2dddt in pyridine gave a mixture of tris- and tetrakis(dithiolene) compounds. After addition of 18c6 (18-crown-6), only the tris(dithiolene) complex was obtained and crystallized as orange crystals of [Na(18c6)(py)2]2[U(dddt)3].2py (2.2py) in which the isolated [U(dddt)3]2- anion adopts a slightly distorted trigonal prismatic configuration. A few red crystals of the unsolvated complex 2 and the trinuclear anionic compound [Na(18c6)(py)2]3[Na{U(dddt)3}2] (3) were also obtained along with orange crystals of 2.2py. All the tris(dithiolene) compounds exhibit large folding of the dddt ligand and significant interaction between the C=C double bond and the metal center.

Tris(dithiolene) complexes of neodymium and cerium: mononuclear species, chains, and honeycomb networks.

Reactions of Ln(BH4)3(THF)3 (Ln = Nd, Ce) and M2dddt (M = Na, K; dddt = 5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiine-2,3-dithiolate) in THF or pyridine gave, after addition of 18c6 (18-crown-6), several crystalline compounds which all contain the tris(dithiolene) Ln(dddt)3 unit. Crystals of [Na(18c6)(py)2]2[Na(18c6)(py)][Nd(dddt)3(py)].3py (1.3py) are built up from discrete mononuclear cationic and anionic species whereas crystals of {[Na(18c6)(py)2](0.5)[Na(18c6)(py)(1.5)][Na(1.5)Nd(dddt)3]}(infinity) (2) are composed of discrete [Na(18c6)(py)x]+ cations and polymeric anionic two-dimensional layers in which the Nd(dddt)3 units are linked to three neighbors by sodium atoms to form a honeycomb network. Analysis of the temperature dependence of the molar magnetic susceptibility of 2 shows that chiMT decreases from 1.63 cm3 K mol(-1) at 300 K down to 0.6 cm3 K mol(-1) at 5 K, due to the crystal-field splitting of the (4)I(9/2) free-ion state. Complexes {[Na3(18c6)(1.5)Nd(dddt)3(THF)].3THF}(infinity) (3.3THF) and {[K3(18c6)(1.5)Nd(dddt)3(py)].3py}(infinity) (4.3py) exhibit neutral polymeric layers with the Nd(dddt)3 units linked by M2(18c6) fragments. In the cerium compound {[Na2(18c6)Na(py)2Ce(dddt)3(py)].3py}(infinity) (5.3py), each Ce(dddt)3 unit is linked to two neighbors only by Na2(18c6) moieties, giving infinite zigzag chains.

Unexpected reactivity of PdCl(2) and PtCl(2) complexes of the unsaturated diphosphine o-Me(2)TTF(PPh(2))(2) toward chloride abstraction with thallium triflate.

Attempted thallium triflate abstraction of chloride anions from the MCl(2) complexes of the unsaturated chelating diphosphines o-dimethyl-bis(diphenylphosphino)tetrathiafulvalene (P2) (M = Pd, Pt) and cis-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene (dppen) (M = Pd) affords, surprisingly, a Tl(OTf) adduct in the case of (P2)PdCl(2) and (P2)PtCl(2), with no chloride abstraction, and a dicationic bis(palladium) bis(triflate) salt in the case of (cis-dppen)PdCl(2), in which only one Cl anion was removed. The crystal structures of these complexes were determined by X-ray analysis, which established the formulations (P2)MCl(2).Tl(OTf) (M = Pd, Pt) and [(dppen)PdCl](2)(OTf)(2), respectively. These compounds can be seen as possible intermediates in the general chloride abstraction process between (P-P)MCl(2) (M = Pd, Pt) and thallium triflate.

Paramagnetic cp/dithiolene complexes as molecular hinges: interplay of metal/ligand electronic delocalization and solid-state magnetic behavior.

Paramagnetic, flexible organometallic dithiolene complexes associating cyclopentadienyl (Cp) and dithiolate (dt) ligands, such as CpM(dt), Cp2M(dt), or CpM(dt)2, are investigated in the solid state through their structural and magnetic properties. The degree of delocalization of the spin density between the metal and the dithiolene fragments in a given complex, its varying molecular geometry and frontier orbitals, and the structures adopted in the solid state are intimately correlated and adapt mutually to each other. A variety of magnetic structures follows, from noninteracting spins to dyads, spin chains, spin ladders, or antiferromagnetic ground state, the detailed properties of which are highly sensitive to "minor" molecular modifications.

Single crystalline commensurate metallic assemblages of pi-slabs and CdI2-type layers: synthesis and properties of beta-(EDT-TTF-I2)2[Pb5/6 square 1/6I2](3) and beta-(EDT-TTF-I2)2[Pb2/3+xAg1/3-2x square xI2]3, x = 0.05.

The ability of I...I van der Waals interactions to direct the self-assembly of slabs of the radical cation of ethylenedithio-1,2-diiodo-tetrathiafulvalene, EDT-TTF-I(2), and polymeric lead iodide covalent anionic layers is demonstrated by the synthesis of single crystals of beta-(EDT-TTF-I(2))(2)(.+)[(Pb(5/6) square (1/6)I(2))(1/3-)](3), triclinic, P-1, a = 7.7818(8), b = 7.9760(8), c = 19.9668(2) A, alpha = 82.409(12), beta = 85.964(12), gamma = 61.621(11) degrees, V = 1080.76(19) A(3), R1, wR2 = 0.0459, 0.0947; and beta-(EDT-TTF-I(2))(2)(.+)[(Pb(2/3+x)Ag(1/3-2x)square(x)I(2))(1/3-)](3), x approximately 0.05, triclinic, P-1, a = 7.7744(8), b = 7.9193(8), c = 19.834(2) A, alpha = 87.189(12), beta = 83.534(12), gamma = 61.602(11) degrees, V = 1067.4(2) A(3), R1, wR2 = 0.0508, 0.0997. The state-of-the-art, combined microprobe and structural analysis of the metal site vacancies and occupancies patterns reveal a commensurate organic-inorganic interface and point out the importance of halogen.halogen van der Waals interactions to future studies aiming at directing interface topologies. The electronic structure, room-temperature metallic character and metal-insulator transition at ca. 70 K of the two-dimensional organic slabs are retained upon alloying of the inorganic sublattice with monocations. The room-temperature conductivity of the metallic lead-silver alloy is 2 orders of magnitude larger than that of beta-(EDT-TTF-I(2))(2)(.+)[(Pb(5/6) square (1/6)I(2))(1/3-)](3). This calls for the study of materials with diverse alloying patterns with metal cations of different nature and charge.

Reaction of Octachlorodirhenate with a Redox-Active Tetrathiafulvalene Phosphine Ligand: Spectroscopic, Magnetic, and Structural Characterization of the Unusual Paramagnetic Salt [ReCl(2)(o-P2)(2)][Re(2)Cl(6)(o-P2)] (o-P2 = o-{P(C(6)H(5))(2)}(2)(CH(3))(2)TTF).

Reaction of [(n-Bu)(4)N](2)[Re(2)Cl(8)] with the tetrathiafulvalene phosphine ligand o-{P(C(6)H(5))(2)}(2)(CH(3))(2)TTF (o-P2) in refluxing ethanol produces the mixed-nuclearity salt [ReCl(2)(o-P2)(2)][Re(2)Cl(6)(o-P2)] (1.2), composed of the mononuclear Re(III) complex (1) and the mixed-valence Re(II)-Re(III) dinuclear anion (2). The complex crystallizes as a CH(2)Cl(2) solvate in the triclinic space group P&onemacr;, a = 13.4559(1) Å, b = 20.4015(3) Å, c = 21.5538(1) Å, alpha = 88.261(1) degrees, beta = 72.987(1) degrees, gamma = 84.933(1) degrees, and Z = 2. The molecular cation consists of two trans o-P2 ligands in the equatorial plane and axial chloride ligands. The dinuclear anion adopts an eclipsed geometry with an unsymmetrical coordination environment for the two metal atoms; one Re(II) center is coordinated to a chelating o-P2 ligand and two chlorides while the other Re atom is coordinated to four chloride ligands. The dinuclear portion of the salt is a monoanion which leads to a formal bond order assignment of 3.5, based on the fact that the molecule possesses an Re(2)(5+) core. The salt was further characterized by infrared and electronic spectroscopies, electrochemistry, and variable temperature magnetic susceptibility; the presence of the individual ions in bulk samples was verified by positive and negative FAB mass spectrometry. Isolation of the two separate ions was achieved by treatment of the salt with Co(C(5)H(5))(2), which reduces the Re(III) cation to the Re(II) complex ReCl(2)(o-P2)(2) (3). This neutral compound was separated from the byproduct salt [Co(C(5)H(5))(2)][Re(2)Cl(6)(o-P2)] and reoxidized with CCl(4)/CH(2)Cl(2) or NOBF(4) to produce [ReCl(2)(o-P2)(2)][Cl] (1.[Cl]) and [ReCl(2)(o-P2)(2)][BF(4)] (1.[BF(4)]), respectively. Compounds 3, 1.[Cl], and 1.[BF(4)] were identified by a combination of infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and cyclic voltammetric measurements. Variable temperature dc susceptibility studies of [ReCl(2)(o-P2)(2)][Re(2)Cl(6)(o-P2)] (1.2) revealed classical Curie paramagnetic behavior (with a Curie constant equal to 0.395) and a large temperature independent paramagnetic contribution (chi(TIP) = 9.64 x 10(-)(3) emu/mol). The EPR spectrum of 1.2 consists of a broad, complex signal due to hyperfine interactions to both isotopes (185,187)Re (I = (5)/(2)) and (31)P (I = (1)/(2)) which is typical for paramagnetic metal-metal bonded dirhenium phosphine compounds.
