Morphometric study of the aortic and great pulmonary arterial pathways in human foetuses.

In prenatal and pediatric cardiovascular surgery knowledge of luminal diameters of the aortic and great pulmonary pathways is essential. The internal diameters of the aortic and great pulmonary pathways in 131 human foetuses (65 male, 66 female) were studied by means of anatomical, digital and statistical methods. During foetal development the absolute diameters revealed a linear increase. Correlation coefficients between these diameters and foetal age were statistically significant (P< or =0.05) for each age group and reached following values: r1 = 0.70 for the aortic bulb, r2 = 0.79 for the ascending aorta, r3 = 0.77 for the aortic isthmus, r4 = 0.79 for the descending aorta, r5 = 0.63 for the pulmonary trunk, r6 = 0.36 for the arterial duct, r7 = 0.46 for the right pulmonary artery and r8 = 0.49 for the left one. Diameters of the aorta and the pulmonary trunk indicated the relative increase in the values. A different tendency was observed for the internal diameters of the arterial duct and both pulmonary arteries, which were relatively decreased with increased foetal age. The largest diameter was observed in the arterial duct, the intermediate--in the right pulmonary artery and the smallest--in the left pulmonary artery. The cross-sectional area of the descending aorta was equal to the sums of the sectional areas of the aortic isthmus and the arterial duct (r9 = 0.97). The cross-sectional area of the pulmonary trunk was equal to the sums of the sectional areas of the both pulmonary arteries and the arterial duct (r10 = 0.91).

[Tick-transmitted diseases which may threaten health of dogs in Poland].

Tick-borne dog infectious diseases constitute an emerging problem in veterinary medicine in recent years. The diseases recognized as characteristic for tropical and semi-tropical regions are diagnosed in dogs in countries with temperate climate including Poland. The major reason for such phenomenon is that Polish tourists increasingly travel with their dogs into subtropical and tropical areas of the world. Coming back to Poland, dogs often bring in non-native species of ticks as well as pathogens transmitted by them. Tick-borne diseases can result from infection with bacteria, viruses and parasitic protozoa. In this review we present most important tick-transmitted diseases which may occur in dogs in Poland.

Morphometric analysis of the gonadal veins in human foetuses.

Professional literature data demonstrates morphometric features of the gonadal veins in adults. The length of the gonadal veins and their outlet angles in 130 human foetuses (71 males, 59 females), between the 4th and 6th month of prenatal life, were studied by means of anatomical, digital and statistical methods. In all specimens the left gonadal veins entered the left renal artery, and the right gonadal veins terminated in the inferior vena cava. In all age ranges the left gonadal veins were longer than the right ones (P < or = 0.01), and the outlet angles of the left gonadal veins were larger than these angles on the right side (P < or = 0.01). The correlation coefficient between the length of the left and right testicular veins was r1 = 0.975 (P < or = 0.01). The correlation coefficients between the length of the testicular veins and foetal age were r2 = 0.591 for the right testicular vein and r3 = 0.578 for the left testicular vein (P < or = 0.01). A low correlation between the outlet angles of the testicular veins and foetal age was observed, for the right side r4 = 0.187, and for the left side r5 = 0.177 (P < or = 0.05). The correlation coefficient between the length of the left and right ovarian veins in foetuses aged 4-6 months was r6 = 0.855 (P < or = 0.01). The correlation coefficients between the length of the ovarian veins and foetal age were r7 = 0.578 for the right ovarian vein and r8 = 0.566 for the left ovarian vein (P < or = 0.01). No correlation between the outlet angles of the ovarian veins and foetal age was observed (P > 0.05).

The retroperitoneal anastomoses of the gonadal veins in human foetuses.

In the retroperitoneal space the gonadal veins form a collateral circulation that has a great clinical impact on sclerotherapy or surgical ligation of varicoceles. The aim of this study was to examine the communications of the gonadal veins (according to classification, frequency of appearance, gender and syntopic differences) in human foetuses of both sexes (71 males and 59 females) aged 4--6 months of intrauterine life. On the right side the most frequently were found the gonadal-periureteral anastomosis (23%) and the gonadal-perirenal anastomosis (22%). A gonadal-lumbar anastomosis on the right side appeared in 7% of cases. On the left side the most frequent (37%) was the gonadalperirenal anastomosis, more frequently occurring as an ovarian-perirenal anastomosis (48%) than as a testicular-perirenal anastomosis (29%). Gonadal-periureteral anastomoses were found in a quarter of cases. Gonadal-lumbar anastomoses were observed in 7% of individuals. On the left side the gonadal-mesenteric inferior anastomosis was specifically observed (21%) as an ovarian-mesenteric inferior anastomosis (24%) and a testicular-mesenteric inferior anastomosis (19%). The cross-communications between the right and left gonadal veins (7%) were more frequently as the bilateral testicular (9.7%) than as the bilateral ovarian one (3%). In female foetuses gonadal-perirenal anastomoses occurred with statistically greater frequency than gonadal-periureteral anastomoses (p<=0.05). The frequency of cross-communications of the gonadal veins was three times greater in male foetuses (p</=0.01). Statistical analysis revealed a significantly greater frequency of left-sided anastomoses: the gonadal-perirenal in both sexes (p</=0.05), the gonadal-periureteral in males (P</=0.05) and the gonadalmesenteric inferior in both sexes (p</=0.01).

Skeletopic analysis of the gonadal veins in human foetuses.

During ontogenesis an imbalance is observable in the development of the skeletal and vascular systems. By means of anatomical and radiological methods the gonadal veins were studied in relation to the vertebral column in 60 human foetuses of both sexes aged from 4 to 6 months of prenatal life. In male foetuses aged 4--5 months the origin of the gonadal veins projected onto the sacral apex (r(1)=0.95, r(3)=0.85), and in 6(th) month they extended below the vertebral column (r(1')=0.80, r(3')=0.90). In female foetuses the origin of the gonadal veins in the 4(th) month projected symmetrically onto S(1) (r(5)=0.70, r(7)=0.70). In the 5(th) month of intrauterine life the origin of the left ovarian vein was found at S2 (r(7')=0.80) and the origin of the right one at S1-S2 (r(5')=0.80). In the 6th month the origin of the left ovarian vein was located at S(3) (r(7')=0.80) and the right one at S(2)-S(3) (r(5'')=0.90). The skeletopic analysis of the origin of the gonadal veins demonstrated gender (the origin was higher in females) and syntopic (the origin was higher on the right side) differences (p</=0.05). In foetuses of both sexes aged 4 months of prenatal life the termination of the left gonadal veins projected onto Th(12)-L(1) (r(4)=0.85, r(8)=0.80) and in foetuses aged 5--6 months it projected onto L(1)-L(2) (r(4')=0.90, r(8') = 0.95). In both sexes the termination of the gonadal veins on the right side projected constantly onto L(2) (r(2)=0.90, r(6)=0.95) from the 4(th) to the 6(th) month of intrauterine life. The skeletopic analysis of the termination of the gonadal veins showed syntopic dimorphism (p</=0.05) without gender differences (p>0.05). On the right side the termination of the gonadal (testicular and ovarian) veins projected constantly onto L(2). On the left side the termination of the left gonadal (testicular and ovarian) veins apparently descended by one vertebra (pseudodescensus).

[Liver regeneration].

The liver is one of the most complex organs in the body, containing at least seven different cell types and carrying out over 5000 functions. The liver transplantation became a known and effective method for treating its end-stage insufficiency. In response to hepatocellular damage (viral, chemical or surgical injury) the liver mounts inflammatory, regenerative and repair processes with the aim of restoring the functional liver tissue mass. Restoration or liver regeneration after a partial hepatectomy has been scientifically observed since the late nineteenth century. By definition, liver regeneration is an orchestrated response induced by specific external stimuli, involving sequential changes in gene expression, growth factor production, and morphologic structure. During this process, the liver undergoes compensatory hyperplasia in order to reestablish the optimal mass set in relationship to its body size. Many growth factors and cytokines, most notably HGF, EGF, TGF-alpha, IL-6, TNF-alpha, insulin and norepinephrine, seem to play important roles in this process.

[Pathological changes of liver in infection of Fasciola hepatica].

Pathological changes of liver in infection of Fasciola hepatica. Fasciolosis caused by Fasciola hepatica is a hepatic parasitic infection that affects numerous mammal species, mainly ruminants, in several countries of Europe, Asia and America. The economic significance of fasciolosis is mainly due to direct losses caused by a decrease of weight rate, milking capacity and the confiscation of altered livers in slaughterhouse. In this review we present mechanisms of damaging of host liver during invasion of Fasciola hepatica. Parasites digest hepatic tissue and cause extensive parenchymal destruction with intensive haemorrhagic lesions and immunological reactions. Mechanical liver damage is due to migrating juvenile fluke. Macerated hepatic cells have been observed inside the oral sucker and pharynx. Moreover, the process of ulceration of liver tissue was observed in regions adjacent to the spiny body of fluke tegument. On the other hand, the injury of the liver can be induced chemically by factors produced or induced by the fluke. Probably, fluke proteases and other tissue-degrading enzymes can be responsible for negative effect on liver parenchyma. There is no evidence to link fluke-enzymes with tissue penetration. The consequences of liver damage resulting from the migrating flukes compromises liver function which is reflected in changes of plasma protein concentration (albumin, globulin). Additianally, changes of levels of hepatic enzymes released into the blood as a result of damage of liver tissue are used to monitor the progress of the infection in a variety of Fasciola hepatica hosts and as a sensitive diagnostic aid in field infection.

The internal thoracic artery in human foetuses.

The aim of this study was to examine the internal thoracic artery (ITA) in human foetuses. The research material consisted of 32 human foetuses (18 female, 14 male) from the 21(st) to 24(th) week of intrauterine life. After intravascular injection with white latex LBS 3060, the foetuses were fixed in 10% neutral formalin solution. The whole course of the ITA was prepared. Photographic documentation was performed with a Nikon Coolpix 4500 digital camera, and source pictures of arteries were rendered in a Digital Computer System Analysis. The ITA was evaluated with regard to its origin, length, distance from the edge of the sternum to two intercostal spaces (2(nd), 5(th)) and division into terminal branches. The right ITA (RITA) arose from the ascending (68.7%), arcuate (21.9%) and descending (3.2%) parts of the subclavian artery. In other cases (6.2%) it was a branch of the thyrocervical trunk. The left ITA (LITA) was a branch of the ascending (78.1%) and arcuate (21.9%) parts of the subclavian artery. The ITA was longer in male foetuses. Regardless of sex, the LITA was longer than the RITA. Coefficient correlation between the RITA and LITA was 0.92 (p < 0.001). The distance of the ITA from the edge of sternum in the 2(nd) and 5(th) intercostal spaces on both sides was greater in females. It appeared most frequently in the 6(th) space (43.7% right-sided and 56.3% left-sided). Typical bifurcation of the ITA into the superior epigastric artery and the musculophrenic artery was observed in 78.1% of cases on the right side and in 81.25% of cases on the left side.

[Expression and purification of the recombinant fusion protein GST-cysteine protease of Ancylostoma ceylanicum].

cDNA encoding Ancylostoma ceylanicum cysteine protease (ACEY-1) was cloned into pGEX-4T eucaryotic expression vector then E. coli BL2 cells were transformed with the plasmid using electroporation method. The expression of the recombinant protein in liquid cultures was induced by the addition of IPTG. The Western blot analysis showed that the recombinated ACEY-1 may be solublised only partially at pH 7.4 which allowed affinity-purification of this protein using glutathione-sepharose column.

Variability of the azygos vein system in human foetuses.

The aim of the study was to examine the variability of the azygos vein system and to determine the location of the veins with reference to the vertebral midline and the skeletopy of their termination. The research material consisted of 32 human foetuses (14 male, 18 female) from 21(st) to 24(th) week of intrauterine life, fixed in 10% neutral formalin solution. Conventional anatomical - radiographic methods were used. 5 different configurations of the azygos vein system were found. In the 1(st) configuration there were 3 azygos veins, with both the left side veins, the hemiazygos vein (HV) and the hemiazygos accessory vein (HAV), joining the azygos vein (AV) separately. In the 2(nd) configuration the HV and the HAV were joined to the AV together. In the 3(rd )configuration the HAV was missing, and the 4(th) to 8(th) left intercostal veins were joined to the AV separately. In the 4(th) configuration the HV was missing. In the 5(th) configuration there was the AV only, which coursed along the vertebral midline. In these 4 configurations (1-4) the AV was located on the right side (90.6%) and in the 5(th) configuration the AV was located in the vertebral midline. The termination of the AV projected mostly on Th(4) (81.25%). The junction of the HV and the AV was found the most frequently at Th(8) (35.7%), and the junction of the HAV and AV most frequently at Th(4) (41.6%).
