[Family vulnerability: concept development].

This study aimed to develop the concept of family vulnerability. Data were collected through Qualitative Concept Analysis, which involves two phases. In the first, theoretical phase, data from literature were used for identification of the theoretical attributes of the concept. In the second, field phase, data were collected by means of observations and interviews with twelve families going through the experience of a child's disease and hospitalization. Symbolic Interactionism was used as a theoretical framework, which supported Grounded Theory, applied to guide data collection and analysis in the field phase. As a result of phase II, a theoretical model was built, whose central category defines family vulnerability as FEELING THREATENED IN THEIR AUTONOMY, due to the interactions between family members, illness and health team. The comparison between the two analyses allowed for a theoretical proposition of family vulnerability and advances in terms of theoretical knowledge on family nursing.

[Identification of family vulnerability in clinical practice].

In this paper we present a report of a clinical situation in which we identified the vulnerability of the family, propitiating to pediatric nurses the use of this concept in their practice and intervention with families. The study was carried out with a family that was going through a situation of a child illness and hospitalization. The vulnerability was identified in the interactions of family members with the illness, with other family members and with the health staff, and served as a guide for planning the nursing assistance. The interventions led to the strengthening of the family to face the situation and, for pediatric nurses, the recognition of the importance of using the results of theoretical research in their professional practice.

[The use of videotaping in qualitative research].

Considering advancements in data collection methods, we explore the use of videotaping in qualitative research. This bibliographical study aims at developing reflections on the possibilities of using videotapes in research and at providing material to researchers. The video is used as an instrument of data collection and generation. We mention technical aspects, such as the utilization of a mobile or fixed camera. By means of the latter, the authors report their experience, emphasizing compliance with the neutrality principle and the possibility of editing the images obtained as a means of generating new data. The authors highlight that it was possible to detect contradictions between discourse and behavior through the use of videotaping and interviews. The authors also discuss the ethical principles set by CNS Resolution 196/96 and other ethical questions, whose solutions should be based on the agreement between researchers and subjects.

[Living the mother-child-family triad in the Kangaroo Method].

This study focuses on the experience of families in the Kangaroo Mother Method (KM) and aims to understand the functioning of the family dynamics and to apprehend the family transformations as a result of their experience in the method. The study used Symbolic Interactionism as a theoretical and Grounded Theory as a methodological reference framework. Data revealed the following phenomena: having an unexpected evolution and outcome of pregnancy, which is a phase in which the parents go through a pregnancy and suffer due to its premature interruption; coping with the prematurity of the child, in which the parents get into the world of prematurity and face the need to act for the child's survival; and living with the decision and the experience together with the child, which reveals the possibility of staying in hospital in the KM or not. These phenomena led to the central category: weighing the risks and benefits between staying with the child in the kangaroo method or with the family.

[The meaning of hospitalization for the pre-school child: a theoretical model].

This study was aimed at comprehending the meaning of being hospitalized for pre-school children. The theoretical references were the Symbolic Interactionism and Vygotsky's theory on the child's symbolic play. The methodological referential was the Theory Based on Data. Eleven children between the ages of 3 and 6 took part in the survey. The strategies for data collection were: participative observation, interviews with the children mediated by the Therapeutic Toy, and interviews with the mothers. The analysis of the data made possible the construction of the technical model Growing up with the mother's protective presence, which puts in evidence the vulnerability, the child's force and the protection given by the mother to face the mystery and the fear of hospitalization.

[Journal of the Nursing School of the University of Sao Paulo -- 36 years looking after the quality of nursing care].

REEUSP has been a trimestrial journal since 1998, which publishes 11 to 13 articles per issue on different nursing subareas; most of them on teaching, health technology, adult health (in its different specialties), mental and psychiatric health. The article and research emphasis keeps on the hospital. For being linked to a teaching unit, it presents quality on its publishing; many times produced from thesis and dissertations. It faces the challenge of stimulating the publishing of authors from other institutions; for not becoming endogenous. On the last 10 years, it received and published articles from 18 Brazilian states and several country cities from Sao Paulo State. Its graphic design was also remodeled for 2003, allowing higher clearness and easiness for reading. It accepts exchange with other journals and it is indexed on many basis. It was gotten a C international classification by CAPES.

[Approaching the family: presenting a new definition of family and care].

Identifying the need to comprehend how nurses 'move' to the family, with the intention of caring for them, the present study obtained twelve biographical narratives of pediatric nurses. The theoretical approach adopted was the Symbolic Interactionism and the methodological one was the Interpretative Interactionism. The analysis of the data allowed the reconstruction of a story which showed that through modifying the concept of caring and family is the process that approximate the pediatric nurses progressively to the family, to a being with them, reaching the freedom to act.

[Loss of spontaneous action: the discomfort of men with acute myocardial infarction].

Considering that comfort and discomfort must be understood in the light of patients' interactions during illness and treatment -thus linked to institutions' objective factors, grounding rationale, and practices-, this study inquired on comfort and discomfort such as experienced by men who had suffered acute myocardial infarction (AMI). By resorting to the Symbolic Interactionism and to Grounded Theory methodology, data were collected by means of interviews with 13 men who had suffered AMI, at two health units in the city of São Paulo. The analysis led to building a theoretical model of such experience, made up by three phenomena and essentially prevaded by the discomfort of "undergoing loss of spontaneous action." This articles sums up the basic psychosocial process that emerges from that experience, and discusses its implications to question the clinical model of treatment, pointing to prevention as a further scope of action for nurses, besides raising issues to enhance nurse education.

[Determinant beliefs nurses' intentions concerning the presence of parents in neonatal intensive care units].

This study aims at learning about the beliefs, attitudes and social rules which determine the nurse's intention to allow the presence of parents in Neonatal Intensive Care Units. The content of semi-structured interviews conducted with 11 nurses was analyzed by using the Rationalized Action Theory as a theoretical framework. The thematic units enabled the comprehension of the relationship between the nurse's intention and behavior when allowing the presence of parents in Neonatal Intensive Care Units as well as the influence of the nurse's personal beliefs and subjective norms on her behavior.
