[Teaching program for elderly women who care for elderly relatives in their home: report of experience].

This is a report of experience about the development of a program designed especially for the orientation of elderly people who care for elderly relatives at home. It was carried out by the coordinators of the Group of Attention for Elderly People's Health (GRASI), of the Campinas State University's Clinics Hospital. This program was developed based on the needs reported by elderly caregivers who take part in the activities of the GRASI. The participants reported that the program made coping with the difficulties related to caregiving better; that there had been an improvement in the understanding of the changes brought by the aging process; and that it made possible the development of procedures that make easier the daily relationship with the elderly that is being cared for.

[Stories by the elderly].

This Brazilian article bears interest for its qualitative methodology which allows us to get a feeling for the elderly of this country being able to relate the results of their lives and knowledge to our own. The lack of an educational health program for the elderly led the authors to create the Health Care Group for the Elderly (GRASI in Portuguese) in which we developed an educational program based on the social-historical perspective of L. S. Vygotsky. This current study analyzes the dynamic speeches recorded by a group of elderly in the GRASI educational program. A group of seven elderly people, from both sexes, having an age equal to or greater than 60, participated in an analysis of the content from meetings among themselves. To analyze the data obtained, in the underlying text as well as their recorded speech, the feelings and meanings of their conversations and stories were identified and separated into thematic units. The results obtained reveal that the opportunity to express their experiences regarding the transformation the elderly have lived during their lives, and to find new ways to treat health problems or how to carry out self health care, is an important resource for elderly nursing care which can lead to the development of health education programs.

[Sleep patterns of first-year nursing students].

This exploratory and descriptive study aimed at describing sleep patterns of first-year university students at the beginning of their course. The study was conducted at Campinas State University, Brazil. Data were collected in two points of time using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Results showed that students report sleep of better quality and increased length during vacations, when they kept sleep habits in conformity to chronotype. After classes started a greater number of subjects reported poor sleep quality and daytime lack of enthusiasm. Those changes could be due to the submission of subjects to schedules imposed by the university or to the irregularity of sleep habits assumed. Possible relationship between those sleep-changes and academic performance stresses the importance of ongoing studies on this issue.

[Living with a permanent intestinal stoma: changes told by stoma patients].

This study relates to the first part of a study developed with persons with permanent intestinal stomas, assisted in specialized outpatient clinics in Campinas, SP (Brazil), aiming to identify the information provided to these patients about their stoma and their difficulties in living with this device. It was verified that patients received insufficient information concerning the stoma before the surgery, what could have contributed to postoperative fears and difficulties in adaptation to the stoma. Results suggest that nurses should assume their roles as patient educators in the whole preoperative process in order to facilitate improvement of quality of life for the stoma patient.
