Chemical occupational risks identified by nurses in a hospital environment.

Hospital nursing workers are exposed to occupational chemical risks. This quantitative study aimed to identify what chemical substances nurses have contact with in their activities, what substances cause health problems and what alterations correspond to possible problems caused by the chemical products they mention. A self-administered data collection instrument was answered by 53 nurses, who mentioned exposure mainly to antibiotics and benzene (100%), iodine (98.1%) and latex-talc (88.7%); the main problem-causing substances mentioned were antineoplastic substances (86.7%), glutaraldehyde (79.2%) and ethylene oxide (75.5%); the described health alterations were: eye watering; allergic reactions; nausea and vomiting, while other health problems that can be caused by the above listed products were not mentioned. These workers need further information on occupational chemical risks, which they could have received in undergraduate or permanent education courses.

[Diseases of the osteomuscular system in nursing workers].

This descriptive and retrospective research was realized at the Fundação Hospitalar do Estado de Minas Gerais, Brazil, and aimed to analyze health problems related to the osteomuscular system in nursing workers of 23 health institutions, who are attended by the Occupational Health Care Division in 2002. Data were collected from the care service maps and from the medical records, on the basis of a script elaborated by the authors. The diagnoses were grouped according to the International Classification of Diseases CID-10 - 10th Review and compared to the Brazilian Health Ministry's list of work-related diseases. The statistical program SPSS was used for data analysis. 11.83% (718) of the 6070 care sessions were diagnosed as osteomuscular problems, involving various body structures such as the spine, upper and lower limbs. Diseases legally considered as occupational diseases related to the muscle-skeletal system were identified in 255 (35%) care sessions, especially back pain (20%) and synovitis and tenosynovitis (13.7%), which were grouped as RSI. This research revealed that greater attention must be given to workers' postures in the execution of their work activities and furniture conditions. Furthermore, ergonomically planned instruments and equipment need to be offered with a view to reducing the incidence levels of osteomuscular problems.

[Regulatory standard 32 and its implications for nursing workers].

Workers in health care institutions often face inappropriate work situations without considering them as dangerous, however, even if scientific evidence demonstrates the presence of various occupational risk agents in work environments. This text aimed to present Regulatory Standard (RS) 32, about Safety and Health at Work in Health Care Institutions. This RS is important in the Brazilian scenario, due to the absence of federal legislation about work safety and health issues in the health sector and due to the fact that existing regulations are dispersed and joined with other RS and resolutions, which were not developed specifically for this purpose. It is concluded that the implantation of this RS may result in beneficial changes, since protection procedures and measures will have to be taken, promoting safety at work and occupational accident prevention among health workers.

[Contamination risks caused by occupational accidents with cutting and piercing material among nursing workers].

This study aimed to identify, among nursing workers from four hospitals in the region of Ribeirão Preto-SP, Brazil, victims of occupational accidents with cutting and piercing material, who were sent for evaluation at a service specialized in treating infectious diseases, individuals who were contaminated and the conduct adopted as a result of the accidents. This is a descriptive field research. The sample consisted of 30 subjects and data were collected by consulting the workers' medical files. The results showed that none of the workers had been contaminated by HBV, HCV or HIV. However, it was observed that only 23.33% of them had kept all the scheduled appointments in order to verify a possible serum conversion. Concerning the conducts adopted as a result of the accident, the use of chemoprophylaxis was recommended in 76.67% of the cases, serological tests in 100% and immunization against Hepatitis in 9.99%. Due to the high occurrence of percutaneous accidents, according to official estimates from other countries, it was concluded that more attention must be given to the prevention of these accidents, as well as to the strict follow-up of workers after occupational exposure.

[Underreporting of accidents with cutting and piercing objects in nursing].

This study aimed at: identifying occupational accidents caused by percutaneous injuries among nursing workers, identifying whether or not accidents were reported and at learning about the reason for non-reporting. It is a descriptive study with a quantitative analysis of the data collected through the interview technique applied to 394 nursing workers from two hospitals in São Paulo State. The results showed that 30% of the 394 workers had an accident in 2001 and of such accidents, 277 (70.30%) were caused by percutaneous injuries, 173 (62.45%) accidents were reported and 104 (37.55%) were not reported. The reasons leading to non-reporting were related to beliefs, lack of knowledge and information concerning contamination risks and to the form of data recording.
