Management and leadership: analysis of nurse manager's knowledge.

Nurses have assumed management positions in many health institutions. To properly accomplish the demands of this role, it is important that they be competent in both management and leadership. For appropriate performance, knowledge of management and supervision styles is a priority. Therefore, the goal of this investigation is to identify the nurse manager's knowledge regarding management and leadership. A structured questionnaire containing twenty-seven questions was applied to twelve Brazilian nurse managers of primary care center called "Family Basic Health Units". Data analysis suggested that the nurse manager lower knowledge in management and leadership is related to visionary leadership, management and leadership conceptual differences, leader's behavior, and situational leadership. And, nurse manager greater knowledge is related to power; team work, and coherence between values and attitudes.

[Building competences in the care, according to Boff: a new perspective of nurse's ethical conduct].

In this study, authors characterize nurse's managerial conduct in the perspective of the work, illustrated through the analysis of three investigations. Understanding the fragility of managerial nurse's situation, considering the commitment with the users and with the ones who provide the services, authors advocate in favor of an intervention to change this situation. Therefore, they propose an alternative of reflection about the changes that are necessary. They defend a new ethics articulating a new sense of providing care proposed by Boff, in which the relationship is based on the companionship, interaction and sharing. According to this way of being, nurse's care is an attitude of concern, responsibility and affective commitment with the other. Thus, the instrumental reasoning is substituted by the sensible reasoning and the spirit of deep feelings. Considering these new values, nurses understand better the other's dimension, the respect, reciprocity, and complementarity in the managerial relationship.

Spirituality: the basis for nurses' ethics.

A social crisis in both the labor and ecological systems constitutes a problem that requires the formulation of a new ethics for humanity. The social crisis is a result of the organizational model used by modern societies in the production of wealth and its unequal distribution. This intense inequality in wealth distribution contributes to a schism between populations. On one side an opulent and privileged society exists, and on the other a poor and downtrodden humanity. This crisis in the labor system stems from automated production methods, which devalue man's work and exclude him from contemporary society. The ecological crisis emerges from the dominance with which men have subjugated the Earth and its resources. Man has not acknowledged Earth's permutations and, therefore, has not taken the necessary caution of such changeability nor respected its effects. Such crises affect all populations and cry out for attention. Contemporary societies demand solutions to these questions. Nursing is a part and parcel of this yearning. In this setting, the nurse should be able to offer collaboration and solidarity with a project of creating a world ethos based on a minimum consensus amongst humans. Understanding and believing that spirituality is invaluable in this process, the authors of this work aim at addressing it as an essential dimension for nurses' ethics.

Ethics, Nursing↗

[Informed management in nursing work].

Informed management presupposes that all individuals will prioritize a taming and determined conduct in detriment of a passive one. It also presupposes deep concern about issues related to the human species, ethical problems, the relationship with nature and, finally, about men's future. In this way, the authors, based on the assumptions underlying the Policies of Informed Management proposed by Maslow, aim at focusing on this type of management in nurses' work. They believe that, by means of such reflection, nurses will be able to incorporate new values which are more harmonized with human nature.

[Ethical aspects concerning nurses' managerial activity].

Aiming at addressing the ethical aspects concerning nurses' managerial activities, the authors of this work referred to Etzioni and adopted a hospital classification as a reference of organization in which consent is based on the internalization of rules accepted as legitimate. Regarding patients, their need to adapt to medical behavior and hospital rules through internalization is considered to be a result of physicians', nurses' and the hospital's power. However, the authors view that such internalization is naive, without consent, especially by taking into account that most Brazilian patients do not know that they should or should not consent and are used to obeying. Thus, the work focused on nurses' managerial actions, indicating that they must be based on professional values, the Nursing ethical code as well as on the rights of hospitalized patients, thus integrating qualified care guided by respect, free consent and promotion of patients as the protagonists and subjects of care.
