[The environment as a health surveillance issue: analysis of nursing activities].

The fact that the need for environmental conservation has been on the national and international agenda determined the development of this study, which aims to examine how the environment is an issue for nurses working in health surveillance services, according to their testimonies. From July to August 1999, eight female nurses described their routine. Their reports were studied by means of the discourse analysis technique. It was concluded that, in general, their actions were not aimed at environmental conservation and were limited to factual and emergency issues.

[Building knowledge in collective health: an analysis of thesis and dissertations].

The aim of this study was to analyze scientific production in Collective Health developed by Collective Health Nursing Department of the School of Nursing Sao Paulo University within 1992 and 2004. A total of 86 master dissertations and doctoral thesis were produced, concerning a variety of study objects, mainly epidemiologic profiles and social reproduction, connected to health-illness processes of social groups. Qualitative analysis predominated, as well as the historical and dialectical theoretical referential. Empirical data were obtained predominantly from different social groups of specific territories. The adoption of analytical categories such as social production and reproduction, gender and generation enabled approaching to comprehend and propose intervention on the study objects, thus improving Collective Health scientific knowledge.

[Reflections on nurses participation in ecological issues].

This paper presents a synthesis of the main movements that has sustained the concept of environment, which finally has constituted the current stage of ecology that shows differentiated meaning nowadays, as it involves the sustainability of the planet. Moreover, it presents how the theme has been considered in the nursing scientific production, at international and national level, pointing out that concerns regarding environmental issues have been growing steadily within many Brazilian nursing conferences.

[Nursing training and the strategy of integrated management of childhood prevalent illnesses].

The Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) strategy aims at improving the quality of care delivered and children's health conditions. This article presents a description and reflection on the introduction of the Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses in the Nursing undergraduate curriculum, based on the literature and on the experience of the authors teaching at the Nursing program on Children's Health from University of São Paulo (Nursing School and Nursing School from Ribeirão Preto). The authors mention historical aspects regarding the IMCI in Brazil and the principles that guide it. In the end, they indicate the potentials regarding the application of this strategy at the health care units for children, focusing on nurses' performance.

[The process of communication in the promotion of breastfeeding].

Breast-feeding is a complex human behavior that contributes to the reduction of infantile morbidity and mortality indices. Recently undertaken research are being achieved focussing on real-life breast-feeding from the fostress' point of view; these studies are showing this experience to often be quite painful both physically and psychologically. The health professional must be prepared to take care of these fostresses, including the ability to communicate with them. The authors present the communication centered on the person: its principles and constitutive elements. Its use "per se" impairs iatrogenic effects to human beings, specially to the fostress.
