The aim of this study was to estimate safety of specific immunotherapy to insects' venom. The frequency of side effects was compared in two groups of patients: subjects with hypersensitivity to insects' venom only and patients with allergy to other allergens. In the examined group of 32 patients with Hymenoptera venoms allergy skin prick tests with common aeroallergens were performed in 30 subjects. In 18 patients (60%) at least one test was positive. In 23 patients (71.9%) immunotherapy with Hymenoptera venom was connected with side effects observed just after administration of vaccine. They were mainly local reactions (itching, redness and oedema). In 6 patients late reactions were observed. No correlation has been found between frequency of side effects of immunotherapy and positive results of skin prick tests. However systemic reactions were revealed only in the group of patients with at least one positive result of skin prick tests.

Fatigue is often related to cancer, and is related to its treatment. Fatigue is the most commonly reported side effect of cancer treatment. It differs from fatigue induced by other causes, because doesn't decrease after period of rest. The fatigue reported by cancer patients is usually described as an unusual, excessive, whole-body experience that is disproportionate or unrelated to activity or exertion and is not relieved by rest or sleep. Cancer related fatigue is multidimensional, subjective experience that has profoundly negative effect on patients' quality of life. Fatigue today is the most commonly reported symptom, for some patients the most unpleasant symptom, and the most side-effect in connection with cancer and/or its treatment. The prevalence of fatigue in patients receiving anti-cancer treatment has been estimated to be more than 80 per cent. The fatigue can be pervasive: patients report that fatigue begins with treatment, continues during the course of chemotherapy or radiation treatment, and declines somewhat--but frequently sustains at a higher-than-baseline rate-after treatment is over. It may also persist for several years even in patients with no apparent disease. Despite of the prevalence of fatigue and its profoundly negative effect on patients quality of life, little is known about the specific mechanisms that underline fatigue in cancer patients or how to prevent it and treat it effectively.
Natural rubber latex (NRL), is a resin sap produced in the cells of caoutchouc plants. It is a water dispersion of cis-1,4-polisopren (caoutchouc)--35%, stabilized with little amounts of proteins, sugar, alcohol, fatty acids and salts. The concentration of all solid substances is about 40%, the rest is water. Immunogenicity of latex depends on the proteins it contains. For many years we read in medical papers about the cases of contact urticaria, asthma, rhinitis, and anaphylaxis after contacting with latex products. It turns out that medical staff is the group of high occupational risk, because of exposure to gloves and other latex products. It is connected with the fact of high gloves usage caused by the danger of virus infections: HIV, HBV, HCV. Latex allergy is one of the reasons of dramatic complications after surgical operations. People who are allergic to latex may have cross reactions to allergens not connected with occupational environment. These are: food and houseplants (Ficus benjamina). The frequency of latex allergy is about 0.1% of the population. In the groups of high risk the frequency rises sharply. It is 17% among medical staff and it reaches 60% among children with spina bifida.
Diagnosis of latex allergy consists of four methods: anamnesis, skin tests, laboratory examinations and specific allergen challenge. Anamnesis is the source of information on the symptoms and reactions of IgE-dependent allergy, different accompanying factors and atopy diseases. The recognition of latex allergy is possible with positive SPT and/or sIgE (latex). Specific allergen challenge is performed in situation with positive anamnesis, negative SPT and negative sIgE (latex). Latex allergy treatment is not different than other allergic diseases. Specific immunotherapy is new methods in these cases. Because of absence of standardized latex allergens, this method is still on experimental issue. The inconsistent results do not allow the recommendation of immunotherapy in everyday practice. The most important prophylactic activity in case of latex allergy is to reduce the exposure to latex among the medical staff and the patients.
Interdependencies between thyroid function and the respiratory system in physiological and pathological conditions are presented in the paper. The dependencies discussed below result from the proximity of both this structures and metabolic interactions between them. Thyroid hormones start to play a role, as early as in the foetus stage, in forming the respiratory system (including beta-receptors formation and surfactant production). They influence the respiratory volume in adults (mainly by changing the anatomical structure of the connective tissue and by influence upon respiratory muscles) and the respiratory flow (by hypersensitivity and bronchospasm induction). They also stimulate the respiratory centre in the brain stem. The respiratory flow in the airways depends also on the thyroid size. It has been proven, that the thyroid expansion (struma) causes tracheal compression and ventilation disturbances of an obstructive type. In conclusion, for a normal respiratory function it is essential to keep the homeostasis of the thyroid hormones serum concentration and the proper volume of the thyroid gland. Laboratory and clinical tests useful in estimating the impact of a wide range of thyroid pathology on the respiratory tract are described in the paper. We also emphasize the usefulness of the spirometry in these cases.
Fungal spores are one of the main groups of allergens. They are present in our environment all year long. The concentration of the spores in July and August is 100-1000 higher than pollens. In contrast with the pollens there is a correlation between the spore count and higher risk of medication use, nocturnal asthma attacks, and hospitalization rates. We have presented the clinical classification of fungi, and characterized main indoor and outdoor allergens. The fungi play also an important role in the sick building syndrome. Fungal allergens are not only aeroallergens, they may also get into our body with food. They may also develop contact reactions. Antibiotic allergy is regarded as one of the classic allergic reactions caused by fungi. The id reactions are caused by the fungi from far infection focuses.
Allergic reactions caused by fungi, may be present in the airways, skin, eyes, gastrointestinal tract, skin and to cause systemic reaction. Nasal symptoms react as allergic rhinitis. In a small group of patients the allergic fungal rhinosinusitis is present. It is important, because of the way of treatment, to differentiate the AFS from the other forms of chronic rhinosinusitis. The fungi may cause bronchial asthma, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and allergic alveolitis (hypersensitivity pneumonitis). Diagnostics of the allergic reactions caused by fungi includes routine allergological methods, mycologic culture and direct microscopic examination. The process of reaching the diagnosis of allergic fungal rhinosinusitis and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis may require the CT and histopatologic examination. The treatment of fungal allergic reactions includes allergen avoidance, pharmacotherapy, antifungal treatment (id reactions) and surgical treatment (allergic fungal rhinosinusitis). The immunotherapy is a valuable, and accepted by the WHO therapy of the Cladosporium and Alternaria sensitive patients.
