Interparticle potential and drag coefficient in nematic colloids.

Magneto-optic tweezers were used for measurements of liquid-crystal-mediated forces between spherical beads with tangential anchoring in thin nematic samples. Repulsive force, which results from the quadrupolar symmetry of defects around the immersed beads, decreases proportionally to 1/x6, with x being the bead separation. The velocity with which the particles are pushed apart also follows the same separation dependence. We thus find the effective drag coefficient gamma(eff) independent of x for surface-to-surface distances as small as 10% of the bead diameter.

Polarization modulation instability in liquid crystals with spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking.

We present a theoretical model which describes the polarization-modulated and layer-undulated structure of the B7 phase and gives the phase transition from the synclinic ferroelectric smectic-C(S)P(F) phase to the B7 phase as observed experimentally. The system is driven into the modulated phase due to the coupling between the polarization splay and the tilt of the molecules with respect to the smectic layer normal. The modulation wavelength and the width of the wall between two domains of opposite chirality are estimated.

Effect of spontaneous polarization and polar surface anchoring on the director and layer structure in surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells.

We use the Landau-de Gennes model to study theoretically the effect of the magnitude of the spontaneous polarization (P(S)), the ratio (r) between the equilibrium layer tilt and the smectic cone angle, the thickness of the insulating alignment layers and the strength of the polar and nonpolar surface anchoring on the director and layer structure in surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells with the chevron structure of smectic layers. The system shows a surprising number of stable structures, accompanied by one or two metastable ones. At P(S) greater than the critical value only quasimonostable structures, which can exhibit the thresholdless (V-shaped) switching, exist at all r and both at weak and strong polar surface anchoring. At lower P(S) bistable and monostable structures can coexist. Bistable structures can be expected at high r, low P(S) and if polar surface anchoring is weaker than the nonpolar one. Lowering the ratio r and/or increasing the strength of polar anchoring promotes the stability of monostable structures. Thicker insulating alignment layers also drive the system into the monostable state. Polar surface anchoring induces a large surface electroclinic effect. As a result the nematic deformations close to the surfaces are very strong and the stress is relieved by bending of the smectic layers. This leads to the formation of a double chevron structure which is stable at very large polar anchoring and due to the surface electroclinic effect it is metastable also at lower values of polar anchoring.

Azimuthal and zenithal anchoring of nematic liquid crystals.

Temperature dependence of azimuthal and zenithal anchoring energy coefficients of the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4(')-cyanobiphenyl on rubbed nylon is measured using dynamic light scattering. The method is based on observations of director fluctuations in a planarly aligned wedge cell, where the anchoring energy coefficients can be obtained without any external torques acting on the liquid crystal during the measurement. We found that both anchoring coefficients decrease steadily on approaching the nematic-isotropic transition. Moreover, in the whole temperature range of the nematic phase, the ratio between the zenithal and the azimuthal anchoring coefficients is almost equal to the ratio between the splay and the twist Frank elastic constants. The same result is obtained also for the nematic phase of 4-n-octyl-4(')-cyanobiphenyl. This indicates that the aligning nylon layer directly affects only the monomolecular layer at the surface whereas the observed anchoring is governed by the elastic properties of the alkyl-cyanobiphenyl.

Dynamic light scattering measurements of azimuthal and zenithal anchoring of nematic liquid crystals.

Dynamic light scattering is used to obtain the anchoring energy coefficients of nematic liquid crystal (4-n-pentyl-4(')-cyanobiphenyl) on rubbed nylon and photoactive poly-(vinyl-cinnamate). The anchoring coefficients are determined by measuring the relaxation time of the fundamental director fluctuation mode in a homogeneously aligned wedge cell as a function of cell thickness. The method is nonperturbative as no external torque is applied to the liquid crystal during the measurement. We show that by using two different scattering geometries, both azimuthal and zenithal anchoring energy coefficients can be measured on the same sample. The obtained zenithal anchoring coefficient is found to be, in contrast to previously reported results, approximately only two times larger than the azimuthal one. The effect of higher order fluctuation modes on the detected autocorrelation function is in good agreement with numerical calculations.

Structure and dynamics of ferroelectric liquid crystal cells exhibiting thresholdless switching.

Surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells are usually bistable, with the spontaneous polarization either up or down, perpendicular to the plane of the cell. In materials with high spontaneous polarization the polarization charge self-interaction leads to a monostable structure that exhibits a thresholdless, "V-shaped" switching of the optical response to an applied voltage. With a model that includes the electrostatic self-energy of the spontaneous polarization, we examine the transition from bistablity to monostability as a function of the polar and nonpolar anchoring energies, the liquid crystal elasticity, and the thickness of the alignment layers. Two bistable and one monostable structures are possible. The bistable state is only obtained when the thickness of the insulating alignment layer and the polar anchoring energy are small, or when the spontaneous polarization is small. From linear stability analysis we get analytical expressions for the limits of stability of the structures. Numerical calculations show that in some ranges of the parameters two structures can coexist. We also present the calculation of the polarization fluctuation modes. The lowest one becomes soft at the continuous transitions among the structures and at the limits of stability.
