Computational study on the relative acidity of acetic acid by the QM/MM method combined with the theory of energy representation.

We have applied the quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) method combined with the theory of energy representation (ER) to study the acidity of acetic acid in aqueous solution. We have focused our attention on the relative acidity DeltapK(a) of the molecule with respect to water solvent to circumvent the ambiguity of the solvation free energies of the molecular species referred to as proton. The value of DeltapK(a) for the acetic acid has been computed as -11.5 when we adopt the free energy change in the gas phase obtained by the B3LYP functional, which is in excellent agreement with the experimental value of -11.0. It has been demonstrated that the QM/MM-ER approach recently developed gives an adequate description for the solvation free energies related to the acidity/basicity calculations of organic molecules.

Exciton recurrence motion in aggregate systems in the presence of quantized optical fields.

The exciton dynamics of model aggregate systems, dimer, trimer, and pentamer, composed of two-state monomers is computationally investigated in the presence of three types of quantized optical fields, i.e., coherent, amplitude-squeezed, and phase-squeezed fields, in comparison with the case of classical laser fields. The constituent monomers are assumed to interact with each other by the dipole-dipole interaction, and the two-exciton model, which takes into account both the one- and two-exciton generations, is employed. As shown in previous studies, near-degenerate exciton states in the presence of a (near) resonant classical laser field create quantum superposition states and thus cause the spatial exciton recurrence motion after cutting the applied field. In contrast, continuously applied quantized optical fields turn out to induce similar exciton recurrence motions in the quiescent region between the collapse and revival behaviors of Rabi oscillation. The spatial features of exciton recurrence motions are shown to depend on the architecture of aggregates. It is also found that the coherent and amplitude-squeezed fields tend to induce longer-term exciton recurrence behavior than the phase-squeezed field. These features have a possibility for opening up a novel creation and control scheme of exciton recurrence motions in aggregate systems under the quantized optical fields.

Origin of the enhancement of the second hyperpolarizability of singlet diradical systems with intermediate diradical character.

The origin of the diradical character dependence of the second hyperpolarizability (gamma) of neutral singlet diradical systems is clarified based on the perturbation formula of gamma using the simplest diradical molecular model with different diradical characters, i.e., H2 under bond dissociation. The enhancement of gamma in the intermediate diradical character region turns out to originate from the increasing magnitude of the transition moment between the first and second excited states and the decrease of that between the ground and first excited states, respectively, with the increase in diradical character. This feature confirms that open-shell singlet conjugated molecules with intermediate diradical characters constitute a new class of third-order nonlinear optical systems, whose gamma values can be controlled by the diradical character in addition to the conjugation length.

Second hyperpolarizabilities (gamma) of bisimidazole and bistriazole benzenes: diradical character, charged state, and spin state dependences.

The second hyperpolarizabilities of bisimidazole- and bistriazole-benzene compounds have been calculated at different levels of approximation to unravel the effects of diradical character as well as of charge and spin multiplicity. The largest second hyperpolarizabilities are associated with intermediate diradical character, provided positive charging does not compensate for this effect. For the neutral diradical bisimidazole compound, the singlet diradical species possesses a second hyperpolarizability two to three times larger than the corresponding triplet, demonstrating the possibility of spin state control of the third-order NLO responses for diradical species.

Quantum master equation approach to the second hyperpolarizability of nanostar dendritic systems.

We investigate the dynamic second hyperpolarizability (gamma) of nanostar dendritic systems using the quantum master equation approach. In the nanostar dendritic systems composed of three-state monomers, the multistep exciton states are obtained by the dipole-dipole interactions, and the directional energy transport, i.e., exciton migration, from the periphery to the core is predicted to occur by the relaxation between exciton states originating in the exciton-phonon coupling. The effects of the intermolcecular interaction and the exciton migration, i.e., exciton relaxation, on the gamma in the third-harmonic generation (THG) are examined in the three-photon off- and on- resonance regions using the two-exciton model. Furthermore, the method for analysis of spatial contributions of excitons to gamma is presented by partitioning the total gamma into the one- and two-exciton contributions. It turns out that the exciton relaxation between exciton states causes significant broadening of the spectra of gamma and their mutual overlap as well as the relative increase of two-exciton contributions in the nanostar dendritic system.

Basis set and electron correlation effects on the polarizability and second hyperpolarizability of model open-shell pi-conjugated systems.

The basis set and electron correlation effects on the static polarizability (alpha) and second hyperpolarizability (gamma) are investigated ab initio for two model open-shell pi-conjugated systems, the C(5)H(7) radical and the C(6)H(8) radical cation in their doublet state. Basis set investigations evidence that the linear and nonlinear responses of the radical cation necessitate the use of a less extended basis set than its neutral analog. Indeed, double-zeta-type basis sets supplemented by a set of d polarization functions but no diffuse functions already provide accurate (hyper)polarizabilities for C(6)H(8) whereas diffuse functions are compulsory for C(5)H(7), in particular, p diffuse functions. In addition to the 6-31G(*)+pd basis set, basis sets resulting from removing not necessary diffuse functions from the augmented correlation consistent polarized valence double zeta basis set have been shown to provide (hyper)polarizability values of similar quality as more extended basis sets such as augmented correlation consistent polarized valence triple zeta and doubly augmented correlation consistent polarized valence double zeta. Using the selected atomic basis sets, the (hyper)polarizabilities of these two model compounds are calculated at different levels of approximation in order to assess the impact of including electron correlation. As a function of the method of calculation antiparallel and parallel variations have been demonstrated for alpha and gamma of the two model compounds, respectively. For the polarizability, the unrestricted Hartree-Fock and unrestricted second-order Møller-Plesset methods bracket the reference value obtained at the unrestricted coupled cluster singles and doubles with a perturbative inclusion of the triples level whereas the projected unrestricted second-order Møller-Plesset results are in much closer agreement with the unrestricted coupled cluster singles and doubles with a perturbative inclusion of the triples values than the projected unrestricted Hartree-Fock results. Moreover, the differences between the restricted open-shell Hartree-Fock and restricted open-shell second-order Møller-Plesset methods are small. In what concerns the second hyperpolarizability, the unrestricted Hartree-Fock and unrestricted second-order Møller-Plesset values remain of similar quality while using spin-projected schemes fails for the charged system but performs nicely for the neutral one. The restricted open-shell schemes, and especially the restricted open-shell second-order Møller-Plesset method, provide for both compounds gamma values close to the results obtained at the unrestricted coupled cluster level including singles and doubles with a perturbative inclusion of the triples. Thus, to obtain well-converged alpha and gamma values at low-order electron correlation levels, the removal of spin contamination is a necessary but not a sufficient condition. Density-functional theory calculations of alpha and gamma have also been carried out using several exchange-correlation functionals. Those employing hybrid exchange-correlation functionals have been shown to reproduce fairly well the reference coupled cluster polarizability and second hyperpolarizability values. In addition, inclusion of Hartree-Fock exchange is of major importance for determining accurate polarizability whereas for the second hyperpolarizability the gradient corrections are large.

Second hyperpolarizability (gamma) of singlet diradical system: dependence of gamma on the diradical character.

The dependence of the second hyperpolarizability (gamma) on the diradical character (y) for singlet diradical systems is investigated using a model compound, the p-quinodimethane (PQM) molecule with different both-end carbon-carbon (C-C) bond lengths, by several ab initio molecular orbital and density functional theory methods. The diradical character based on UHF calculations indicates that at equilibrium geometry PQM is in a singlet ground state and primarily exhibits a quinoid structure, whereas the diradical character increases when increasing both-end C-C bond lengths. At the highest level of approximation, that is, using the UCCSD(T) method with the 6-31G+diffuse p (zeta = 0.0523) basis set, the longitudinal static gamma of PQM presents a maximum value for intermediate diradical character (y approximately 0.5) while the gamma values are larger for intermediate and large diradical character (y approximately 0.5-0.7) than for small diradical character (y < 0.2). This feature suggests that the gamma values of singlet diradical systems in the intermediate and somewhat strong correlation regimes are significantly enhanced as compared to those in the weak correlation regime. These results are substantiated by a complementary study of the variation in gamma upon twisted ethylene.

Exciton migration dynamics in a dendritic molecule: quantum master equation approach using ab initio molecular orbital configuration interaction method.

We investigate the exciton migration dynamics in a dendritic molecular model composed of pi-conjugation linear-leg units (acetylenes and diacetylene) and a benzene ring (branching point) using the quantum master equation approach with the ab initio molecular orbital (MO) configuration interaction (CI) method. The efficient migration of exciton from short-length linear legs (acetylenes) to long-length linear leg (diacetylene) via a benzene ring is observed. As predicted in previous studies, the exciton (electron and hole) distributions are relatively well localized in each generation segmented by the meta-branching point (meta-substituted benzene ring) though the electron and hole distributions are delocalized and are somewhat spatially different from each other within each generation. It is found that the excitons localized in the generation composed of short linear legs occupy in higher-lying exciton states, while those in the generation composed of long linear legs do in lower-lying ones. These features suggest the decoupling of pi-conjugation at the meta-branching point. On the other hand, the relaxation effect between exciton states is found to be caused by the exciton-phonon coupling, in which the existence of common configurations (electron-hole pairs) in CI wave functions between adjacent exciton states (having primary distributions on short and long linear-leg regions, respectively) is important for the relaxation between their exciton states. This feature indicates the importance of partial penetration of pi-conjugation through the meta-substituted benzene ring in excited states for such exciton migration.

Theoretical study on second hyperpolarizabilities of phenylacetylene dendrimer: toward an understanding of structure-property relation in NLO responses of fractal antenna dendrimers.

This contribution explores the relation between molecular second hyperpolarizabilities (gamma) and molecular architecture in phenylacetylene dendrimers using the semiempirical molecular orbital method, that is, INDO/S method. The orientationally averaged gamma of a large-size phenylacetylene dendrimer, which is composed of 24 units of phenylacetylenes and is referred to as D25, is found to be about 50 times as large as that of the diphenylacetylene monomer. In contrast, the gamma(s)() value of D25 is found to be about 6 times as small as that of the para-substituted phenylacetylene oligomer (L25) composed of 24 units of phenylacetylenes. To investigate the structure-property relation in gamma for D25 and L25, we examine the spatial contributions of electrons to gamma values using gamma density analysis. The present analysis reveals that the dominant contributions of electrons to gamma of D25 are localized in the linear-leg regions parallel to the applied electric field and the contributions are also well segmented at the meta-connected points (benzene rings), while the spatial distribution of the gamma density of L25 is extended over the whole region of the chain, and the dominant contribution stems from the both-end regions. It is found for D25 that the magnitude of contributions to gamma in the internal region is more enhanced than that in the outer region. We further found that the magnitudes of contributions in internal linear-leg regions of D25 are somewhat larger than those of the same-size isolated linear-leg molecules. This suggests that the slightly remaining pi-conjugations via the meta-branching points still enhance the contributions to gamma localized in the linear-leg regions. These features of spatial contributions to gamma of D25 are found to originate in the fractal architecture, in which pi-conjugation lengths in the linear-leg region increase on going from the periphery to the core. Finally, fractal antenna dendrimers are expected to be promising novel nonlinear optical (NLO) substances with a controllability of the magnitude and spatial contribution of the third-order NLO properties.
