Dynamical disentanglement across a point contact in a non-Abelian quantum Hall state.

We analyze the tunneling of non-Abelian quasiparticles between the edges of a quantum Hall droplet at the Landau level filling fraction nu=5/2, assuming that the electrons in the first excited Landau level organize themselves in the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state. By bosonizing the edge theory, we show that an effective spin-1/2 degree of freedom emerges in the description of a point contact. We show how the crossover from the high-temperature regime of weak quasiparticle tunneling between the edges of the droplet, with the 4-terminal Rxx approximately T(-3/2), to the low-temperature limit, with Rxx(-1/10)(h/e2) approximately-T4, is closely related to the two-channel Kondo effect. We give a physical interpretation for the entropy loss of ln(2[square root of 2) in this crossover.

Algebraic vortex liquid in spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnets: scenario for Cs2CuCl4.

Motivated by inelastic neutron scattering data on Cs2CuCl4, we explore spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnets with both spatial and easy-plane exchange anisotropies, the latter due to an observed Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Exploiting a duality mapping followed by a fermionization of the dual vortex degrees of freedom, we find a novel critical spin-liquid phase described in terms of Dirac fermions with an emergent global SU(4) symmetry minimally coupled to a noncompact U(1) gauge field. This "algebraic vortex liquid" supports gapless spin excitations and universal power-law correlations in the dynamical spin structure factor which are consistent with those observed in Cs2CuCl4. We suggest future neutron scattering experiments that should help distinguish between the algebraic vortex liquid and other spin liquids and quantum critical points previously proposed in the context of Cs2CuCl4.

Vortices and quasiparticles near the superconductor-insulator transition in thin films.

We study the low temperature behavior of an amorphous superconducting film driven normal by a perpendicular magnetic-field (B). For this purpose we introduce a new two-fluid formulation consisting of fermionized field-induced vortices and electrically neutralized Bogoliubov quasiparticles (spinons) interacting via a long-ranged statistical interaction. This approach allows us to access a novel non-Fermi-liquid phase, which naturally interpolates between the low B superconductor and the high B normal metal. We discuss the properties of the resulting "vortex metal" phase.

Atomic quantum simulator for lattice gauge theories and ring exchange models.

We present the design of a ring exchange interaction in cold atomic gases subjected to an optical lattice using well-understood tools for manipulating and controlling such gases. The strength of this interaction can be tuned independently and describes the correlated hopping of two bosons. We discuss a setup where this coupling term may allow for the realization and observation of exotic quantum phases, including a deconfined insulator described by the Coulomb phase of a three-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory.

Critical dynamics of superconductors in the charged regime.

We investigate the finite temperature critical dynamics of three-dimensional superconductors in the charged regime, described by a transverse gauge field coupling to the superconducting order parameter. Assuming relaxational dynamics for both the order parameter and the gauge fields, within a dynamical renormalization group scheme, we find a new dynamic universality class characterized by a finite fixed point ratio between the transport coefficients associated with the order parameter and gauge fields, respectively. We find signatures of this universality class in various measurable physical quantities, and in the existence of a universal amplitude ratio formed by a combination of physical quantities.

Deconfined quantum critical points.

The theory of second-order phase transitions is one of the foundations of modern statistical mechanics and condensed-matter theory. A central concept is the observable order parameter, whose nonzero average value characterizes one or more phases. At large distances and long times, fluctuations of the order parameter(s) are described by a continuum field theory, and these dominate the physics near such phase transitions. We show that near second-order quantum phase transitions, subtle quantum interference effects can invalidate this paradigm, and we present a theory of quantum critical points in a variety of experimentally relevant two-dimensional antiferromagnets. The critical points separate phases characterized by conventional "confining" order parameters. Nevertheless, the critical theory contains an emergent gauge field and "deconfined" degrees of freedom associated with fractionalization of the order parameters. We propose that this paradigm for quantum criticality may be the key to resolving a number of experimental puzzles in correlated electron systems and offer a new perspective on the properties of complex materials.

Quantum entanglement in carbon nanotubes.

With the surge of research in quantum information, the issue of producing entangled states has gained prominence. Here, we show that judiciously bringing together two systems of strongly interacting electrons with vastly differing ground states-the gapped BCS superconductor and the Luttinger liquid-can result in quantum entanglement. We propose three sets of measurements involving single-walled metallic carbon nanotubes which have been shown to exhibit Luttinger liquid physics, to test our claim and as nanoscience experiments of interest in and of themselves.
