Efficient orientational averaging by the extension of Lebedev grids via regularized octahedral symmetry expansion.

Gaussian spherical quadrature methods in the guise of the Lebedev sampling grids are highly efficient for some orientational ("powder") averaging problems in solid state NMR. However, their applicability is currently restricted, as the sets of orientations are derived analytically and because they are not well adapted to simulate the broad peakshapes encountered, for example, in the NMR on static powders or on half-integer quadrupolar spins subject to second order quadrupolar interactions under magic-angle spinning conditions. We remedy these problems by (i) introducing the recursive procedure regularized octahedral symmetry expansion (ROSE), to which any existing Lebedev set may be subjected. Each recursive step gives a 9-fold enlarged set of orientations. (ii) We demonstrate that ROSE-expanded grids, in conjunction with spectral interpolation, is well suited for calculating broad peakshapes. These advances combine into the apparently most efficient general-purpose two-angle orientational averaging technique proposed to date for solid state NMR applications.

Quadrupolar coupling selective cross-polarization in solid state NMR.

A new strategy is presented for achieving selective heteronuclear polarization transfers from half-integer quadrupolar spins in magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR. By combining cross-polarization with a recently introduced RAPT pulse sequence that selectively excites the signal of a half-integer quadrupolar nucleus based on its quadrupolar coupling constant magnitude, we demonstrate that hetero-nuclei in its close proximity may be selectively excited. Selective 23Na --> 1H polarization transfers are demonstrated in Na2MoO4 x 2 H2O, Na2HPO4 x 2 H2O and a mixture of NaHCO3 and Na2HPO4 x 2 H2O.

Triple-quantum dynamics in multiple-spin systems undergoing magic-angle spinning: application to 13C homonuclear correlation spectroscopy.

We analyze the multiple-quantum dynamics governed by a new homonuclear recoupling strategy effecting an average dipolar Hamiltonian comprising three-spin triple-quantum operators (e.g., S(p)+S(q)+S(r)+) under magic-angle spinning conditions. Analytical expressions are presented for polarization transfer processes in systems of three and four coupled spins-1/2 subject to triple-quantum filtration (3QF), and high-order multiple-quantum excitation is investigated numerically in moderately large clusters, comprising up to seven spins. This recoupling approach gives highly efficient excitation of triple-quantum coherences: ideally, up to 67% of the initial polarization may be recovered by 3QF in three-spin systems in polycrystalline powders. Two homonuclear 2D correlation strategies are demonstrated experimentally on powders of uniformly 13C-labeled alanine and tyrosine: the first correlates the single-quantum spectrum in the first dimension with the corresponding 3QF spectrum along the other. The second protocol correlates triple-quantum coherences with their corresponding single-quantum coherences within triplets of coupled spins.

Second order average Hamiltonian theory of symmetry-based pulse schemes in the nuclear magnetic resonance of rotating solids: application to triple-quantum dipolar recoupling.

The average Hamiltonian theory (AHT) of several classes of symmetry-based radio-frequency pulse sequences is developed to second order, allowing quantitative analyses of a wide range of recoupling and decoupling applications in magic-angle-spinning solid state nuclear magnetic resonance. General closed analytical expressions are presented for a cross term between any two interactions recoupled to second order AHT. We classify them into different categories and show that some properties of the recoupling pulse sequence may be predicted directly from this classification. These results are applied to examine a novel homonuclear recoupling strategy, effecting a second order average dipolar Hamiltonian comprising trilinear triple quantum (3Q) spin operators. We discuss general features and design principles of such 3Q recoupling sequences and demonstrate by numerical simulations and experiments that they provide more efficient excitation of (13)C 3Q coherences compared to previous techniques. We passed up to 15% of the signal through a state of 3Q coherence in rotating powders of uniformly (13)C-labeled alanine and tyrosine. Second order recoupling-based (13)C homonuclear 3Q correlation spectroscopy is introduced and demonstrated on tyrosine.

High resolution 3D exchange NMR spectroscopy and the mapping of connectivities between half-integer quadrupolar nuclei.

A novel approach to the determination of structure and potential dynamics in the solid-state NMR spectroscopy of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei is proposed and demonstrated. The new experiment combines into a single three-dimensional sequence, 2D multiple-quantum magic-angle-spinning NMR and 2D exchange NMR protocols. The result separates for each inequivalent chemical site its spin-diffusion powder line shape to proximate homonuclei. A peculiar feature of the experiment is the asymmetry it displays in the individual 2D powder patterns, resulting from its encoding of isotropic shifts before the mixing period. The resulting spectra facilitate the interpretation of the structural and dynamic features for the individual sites; experimental applications of this new method to relative geometry determinations in 23Na-23Na spin pairs are presented, and the quantitative evaluation of the resulting data is briefly discussed.
