Scaling in the structure of directory trees in a computer cluster.

We describe the topological structure and the underlying organization principles of the directories created by users of a computer cluster. Users create trees with a scale-free degree distribution whose properties are reproduced by a growth and preferential attachment mechanism with a single parameter. The degree distribution has a nonuniversal exponent associated with different values of the parameter. However, the distribution of branch sizes has a universal exponent analytically obtained from the model.

Convection-induced nonlinear symmetry breaking in wave mixing.

We show that the combined action of diffraction and convection (walk-off) in wave mixing processes leads to a nonlinear symmetry breaking in the generated traveling waves. The dynamics near to threshold is reduced to a Ginzburg-Landau model, showing an original dependence of the nonlinear self-coupling term on the convection. Analytical expressions of the intensity and velocity of traveling waves emphasize the utmost importance of convection in this phenomenon. These predictions are in excellent agreement with the numerical solutions of the full dynamical model.

Phase synchronization and polarization ordering of globally coupled oscillators.

We introduce a prototype model for globally coupled oscillators in which each element is given an oscillation frequency and a preferential oscillation direction (polarization), both randomly distributed. We found two collective transitions: to phase synchronization and to polarization ordering. Introducing a global-phase and polarization order parameters, we show that the transition to global-phase synchrony is found when the coupling overcomes a critical value and that polarization order enhancement cannot take place before global-phase synchrony. We develop a self-consistent theory to determine both order parameters in good agreement with numerical results.

Coevolution of dynamical states and interactions in dynamic networks.

We explore the coupled dynamics of the internal states of a set of interacting elements and the network of interactions among them. Interactions are modeled by a spatial game and the network of interaction links evolves adapting to the outcome of the game. As an example, we consider a model of cooperation in which the adaptation is shown to facilitate the formation of a hierarchical interaction network that sustains a highly cooperative stationary state. The resulting network has the characteristics of a small world network when a mechanism of local neighbor selection is introduced in the adaptive network dynamics. The highly connected nodes in the hierarchical structure of the network play a leading role in the stability of the network. Perturbations acting on the state of these special nodes trigger global avalanches leading to complete network reorganization.

All-optical image processing with cavity type II second-harmonic generation.

The possibilities offered by type II intracavity second-harmonic generation for all-optical parallel processing of images are investigated. By injecting an image in a linearly polarized pump beam and a homogeneous field with orthogonal polarization, we obtain, according to the value of the latter, either frequency and polarization transfer or contrast enhancement and contour recognition. Noise-filtering effects are also predicted.

Synchronization of vectorial noise-sustained structures.

The synchronization of vectorial, noise-sustained structures in nonlinear optical systems is discussed. In particular, the analysis is made for nondegenerate optical parametric oscillators with walk off. The interplay between walk off and noise fluctuations leads to the formation of noise-sustained transverse patterns in both the signal and idler fields. Despite the fact that both patterns are stochastic macroscopic structures driven by independent sources of noise, their correlation grows with time, finally leading to a spatially distributed time synchronization of noise-sustained structures. A physical explanation of this phenomenon is found by analyzing the linear instability process and the existence of exact nonlinear solutions that show the same correlation.

Global culture: a noise-induced transition in finite systems.

We analyze the effect of cultural drift, modeled as noise, in Axelrod's model for the dissemination of culture. The disordered multicultural frozen configurations are found not to be stable. This general result is proven rigorously in d=1, where the dynamics is described in terms of a Lyapunov potential. In d=2, the dynamics is governed by the average relaxation time T of perturbations. Noise at a rate r or =T(-1) sustains disorder. In the thermodynamic limit, the relaxation time diverges and global polarization persists in spite of a dynamics of local convergence.

Polarization message encoding through vectorial chaos synchronization in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers.

We show that self-pulsating vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers can exhibit vectorial chaos, i.e., chaos in both intensity and polarization. The achievable synchronization degree of two such lasers is high when using a continuous control scheme and unidirectional coupling. We propose a novel encryption scheme, where the phase of the vectorial field is modulated. Therefore, the total intensity of these lasers remains synchronized while the intensities in the polarization modes (de)synchronize following the phase modulation at a ps time scale. This technique allows for transmission of secure data at high bit rates that are not limited by the relaxation oscillation frequency.

Nonequilibrium transitions in complex networks: a model of social interaction.

We analyze the nonequilibrium order-disorder transition of Axelrod's model of social interaction in several complex networks. In a small-world network, we find a transition between an ordered homogeneous state and a disordered state. The transition point is shifted by the degree of spatial disorder of the underlying network, the network disorder favoring ordered configurations. In random scale-free networks the transition is only observed for finite size systems, showing system size scaling, while in the thermodynamic limit only ordered configurations are always obtained. Thus, in the thermodynamic limit the transition disappears. However, in structured scale-free networks, the phase transition between an ordered and a disordered phase is restored.

Polarization coupling and pattern selection in a type-II optical parametric oscillator.

We study the role of a direct intracavity polarization coupling in the dynamics of transverse pattern formation in type-II optical parametric oscillators. Transverse intensity patterns are predicted from a stability analysis, numerically observed, and described in terms of amplitude equations. Standing wave intensity patterns for the two polarization components of the field arise from the nonlinear competition between two concentric rings of unstable modes in the far field. Close to threshold a wavelength is selected leading to standing waves with the same wavelength for the two polarization components. Far from threshold the competition stabilizes patterns in which two different wavelengths coexist.

Patterns arising from the interaction between scalar and vectorial instabilities in two-photon resonant Kerr cavities.

We study pattern formation associated with the polarization degree of freedom of the electric field amplitude in a mean field model describing a nonlinear Kerr medium close to a two-photon resonance, placed inside a ring cavity with flat mirrors and driven by a coherent x-polarized plane-wave field. In the self-focusing case, for negative detunings the pattern arises naturally from a codimension two bifurcation. For a critical value of the field intensity there are two wave numbers that become unstable simultaneously, corresponding to two Turing-like instabilities. Considered alone, one of the instabilities would originate a linearly polarized hexagonal pattern whereas the other instability is of pure vectorial origin and would give rise to an elliptically polarized stripe pattern. We show that the competition between the two wave numbers can originate different structures, the detuning being a natural selection parameter.
