Photoreversibly switchable superhydrophobic surface with erasable and rewritable pattern.

We report the facile fabrication of a functional nanoporous multilayer film with wettability that is reversibly tunable between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity with UV/visible irradiation. Our approach controls surface roughness with an electrostatic self-assembly process and makes use of the photoresponsive molecular switching of fluorinated azobenzene molecules. Selective UV irradiation onto the nanostructured substrate was used to realize substrates with erasable and rewritable patterns of extreme wetting properties. Our findings will open up new avenues for external stimuli-responsive smart surfaces.

Effects of methyl gallate on arachidonic acid metabolizing enzymes: Cyclooxygenase-2 and 5-lipoxygenase in mouse bone marrow-derived mast cells.

Methyl gallate (MG) is a medicinal herbal product that is isolated from Paeonia lactiflora that inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) dependent phases of prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) generation in bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMC) in a concentration-dependent manner with an IC50 values of 17.0 microM. This compound also found inhibited the COX-2-dependent conversion of the exogenous arachidonic acid to PGD2 in a dose-dependent manner with an IC50 values of 19.0 microM, using a COX enzyme assay kit. However, at concentrations up to 80 microM, MG did not inhibit COX-2 protein expression in BMMC, indicating that MG inhibits COX-2 activity directly. Furthermore, MG consistently inhibited the production of leukotriene C4 (LTC4) in a dose dependent manner, with an IC50 value of 5.3 microM. These results demonstrate that MG has a dual cyclooxygenase-2/5-lipoxygenase inhibitory activity, which might provide the basis for novel anti-inflammatory drugs.

High-yield self-assembly of flower-like ZnO nanostructures.

High-yield three-dimensional (3D) flower-like nanostructures self-assembled from 1 D ZnO nanorods and nanotubes are experimentally demonstrated. The Zn and O terminated crystal planes of ZnO nanorods results in positively and negatively charged top (001) and bottom (00-1) surfaces, respectively. The nanorods self-assembled into 3D nanostructures via the electrostatic interaction between the crystal planes with opposite charges. Moreover, on the basis of the different stability of polar and nonpolar planes in wurtzite-type ZnO, the nanorods based 3D nanostructures transformed into nanotubes based ones spontaneously. This provides a new approach to prepare multi-dimensional materials without the necessity to employ any external intervention.

Reversible super-hydrophobicity to super-hydrophilicity transition of aligned ZnO nanorod films.

Remarkable surface wettability transition occurs with an inducement of ultraviolet (UV) for aligned ZnO nanorod films. The inorganic oxide films, which show super-hydrophobicity (left), become super-hydrophilic (right) when exposed to UV illumination. After the films are placed in the dark, the wettability evolves back to super-hydrophobicity. This reversible effect is ascribed to the cooperation of the surface photosensitivity and the aligned nanostructure. Such special property will greatly extend the applications of ZnO films.
