The weakly coordinating trichloromethanesulfonate anion: NQR comparison of its coordinating abilities via oxygen with those of the chloroacetate ions.

Ionic and covalent derivatives of the chlorine analogue of the nonbasic, weakly coordinating triflate ion, Cl3CSO3(-) or "trichlate" ion, have been prepared and compared with the corresponding more strongly coordinated chloroacetates, Cl(x)CH(3-x)CO(2)M (x = 1-3), using 35Cl NQR (nuclear quadrupole resonance) spectroscopy. The (35)Cl NQR frequencies of all types of derivatives are sensitive to the nature of the metal ion or Lewis acid and are most sensitive in the case of monochloroacetates. In covalent (including zirconocene) derivatives, the average NQR frequencies fall as the Pauling electronegativity of M falls. The results for ionic derivatives contrast with previous results for ionic hexachlorometalates: the average (35)Cl NQR frequencies drop sharply as the ionic radius of the group 1 cation increases. Ab initio Gaussian 98 computations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level on isolated XCH2CO2M (M = Li, Na, K; X = F, Cl) molecules duplicate this trend, showing increasing polarization of the C-Cl bond and smaller electric field gradients for larger group 1 ions; the relevance of this to the solid state polymerization of chloroacetates (Herzberg, O.; Epple, M. Eur. J. Inorg. Chem. 2001, 1395-1406) is discussed. We have prepared the dihydrate and monohydrate of trichlic acid, Cl3CSO3H. Although trichlates have the highest average NQR frequencies of any of these salts, the NQR frequencies of trichlic acid dihydrate are anomalously lower than those of trichloroacetic acid, which suggests that it is a strong acid, ionized in the solid state to H5O2+ and Cl3CSO3(-) ions.

Designing visually optimal shade guides.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Dental shade guides do not provide a broad coverage of tooth colors. There is a need for shade guides that can provide closer color matches. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to propose and assess a visually optimal shade guide for tooth color matching. MATERIAL AND METHODS: With the use of a spectrophotometric approach, the color distribution (L*a*b*) of 150 extracted human teeth and 3 commercially available shade guides (Vita Lumin V, Trubyte Bioform Color Order Shade Guide, and Vitapan 3D-Master Shade System) was measured. With the use of a hierarchical clustering approach, a series of shade guides was designed with a varying number of tabs. The average error (DeltaE) between colors from each shade guide and the extracted teeth was computed. RESULTS: The proposed visually optimal shade guide had the smallest average error of all guides tested. The new guide achieved lower error with fewer shade tabs than the 3 commercial systems evaluated. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, it was demonstrated that a hierarchical clustering technique can be used to design a visually optimal shade guide for a given population with a flexible degree of control over the mean error and number of tabs.

A clinical evaluation of bleaching using whitening wraps and strips.

This study evaluated the degree of color change of teeth and the sensitivities of teeth and gums in an in vivo study. Ranir Whitening Wraps (WW2) and Crest Whitestrips Premium (WP2) were used twice a day and Ranir Whitening Wraps (WW1) were used once a day. Color evaluations occurred at baseline, after five and seven-day use of bleaching agent and 14 days post-bleaching. Color change was evaluated objectively and subjectively. Sensitivity evaluations were also accomplished. Seventy-six of the 78 subjects enrolled completed the study. All three products significantly lightened teeth. WW2 lightened more than WP2 and WW1 in L*, a*, b*, E and shade guide value. WP2 lightened more than WW1 in a*, b*, E and shade guide value. There was no difference in tooth sensitivity, but WW1 and WP2 caused less gingival sensitivity than WW2. The mean age of smokers was seven years younger than nonsmokers who qualified.
