Frequency of the hemochromatosis gene (HFE) 282C-->Y, 63H-->D, and 65S-->C mutations in a general Mediterranean population from Tarragona, Spain.

Three mutations have recently been detected in the hereditary hemochromatosis HFE gene (282C-->Y, 63H-->D, and 65S-->C). To determine their prevalence in a northeastern Spanish Mediterranean population, we studied 812 subjects between 18 and 75 years of age, randomly selected from the electoral roll of three villages. There were no homozygotes for the 282C-->Y or S65D mutations in this sample. For the 63H-->D mutation, 4.8% were homozygotes; 4.3, 32.3, and 2% were heterozygotes for the 282C-->Y, 63H-->D, and 65S-->C mutations, respectively. The prevalence of compound heterozygotes was 2% for 282C-->Y/63H-->D and 0.6% for 63H-->D /65S-->C. We found no significant differences between men and women. In conclusion, 46% of this Mediterranean population of Spain are carriers of at least one of the three mutations that can increase iron absorption.

Further evidence that hyperhomocysteinemia and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T and A1289C polymorphisms are not risk factors for schizophrenia.

It has been suggested that total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) concentrations and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene polymorphisms are risk factors for schizophrenia. We conducted a case-control study to investigate whether tHcy levels and MTHFR C677T and A1298C variants are associated with schizophrenia, giving special consideration to confounding factors. Logistic regression analysis showed that neither tHcy nor MTHFR polymorphisms were associated with schizophrenia. Homozygosity for MTHFR C677T was associated with higher tHcy concentrations in control and schizophrenia groups (P<0.01), which was mainly driven by the male group. The A1298C variant did not show any association with tHcy concentrations. In conclusion, these results do not confirm an independent relationship of tHcy and MTHFR genotype with risk of schizophrenia.

Psychological problems and nutritional status in 6-year-old children.

There were no relations between nutritional status and psychological problems in 83 nonclinical 6-yr.-old children from low-risk socioeconomic and family backgrounds. Only Vitamin B12 and weight were significantly lower in the group with psychological problems. More in-depth longitudinal studies are necessary to confirm these results.

Incidence of acute injury related to fitness testing of U.S. Army personnel.

OBJECTIVE: This study documented the incidence of acute injuries related to the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT). METHODS: A questionnaire was administered to 1,532 soldiers after they completed a biannual APFT. Self-reported injury responses determined the rates of injuries resulting from the push-up, sit-up, and 2-mile run events and were classified into three categories, i.e., all injuries, performance-limiting injuries, and time-loss injuries. RESULTS: A total of 117 soldiers (injury rate, 7.6%) reported sustaining an injury (all injuries), with 11% attributed to the push-up event, 56% to the sit-up event, and 32% to the run event. Forty-six of these injuries reportedly limited performance (injury rate, 3.0%), and 11 soldiers received a duty-limiting profile (time-loss injury rate, 0.7%), which did not differ among events. Injury rates were not significantly associated with the number of sit-ups performed per week or the number of days per week a soldier participated in physical training and were not greater for soldiers who trained specifically for the APFT. History of previous injury was a significant risk factor for injury. CONCLUSION: The push-up, sit-up, and run events of the APFT do not pose a considerable acute injury risk to active duty soldiers.

Uncertain exposures and the privilege of imperception: activist scientists and race at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

This paper locates the EPA national headquarters within the racialized local geography of southwest Washington, D.C. By focusing on the formation of a scientist union and the union's struggle to make visible an episode of chemical exposure in its own offices, the paper connects the work of racialized privilege with the difficulty of proving chemical exposures in the 1980s.
