A prospective study of iridial pigmentation and eyelash changes due to ophthalmic treatment with latanoprost.

PURPOSE: To conduct a 12-month prospective study on the occurrence of latanoprost-induced iridial pigmentation and eyelash change in Japanese patients with glaucoma METHODS: Seventy-five patients (75 eyes) were enrolled in the study. Photographs of the iris and eyelashes were taken under identical conditions before and after treatment. Three glaucoma specialists assessed the iridial pigmentation/eyelash change independently with no knowledge of patient data. The effects of age, sex, concomitant medication, and type of glaucoma on iridial pigmentation/eyelash change were investigated, and intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction and iridocorneal angle pigmentation before and after latanoprost treatment were compared between patients with iridial pigmentation/eyelash change and patients without these changes. RESULTS: The incidence of iridial pigmentation was 6.3% at 1 month, 15.7% at 3 months, 37.8% at 6 months, and 56.5% at 12 months. The incidence of eyelash change was 0% at 1 month, 33.8% at 3 months, 44.4% at 6 months, and 46.2% at 12 months. Latanoprost did not affect IOP reduction or iridocorneal angle pigmentation. No significant relationship between iridial pigmentation and eyelash change was observed. None of the investigated parameters except age affected the iridial pigmentation/eyelash change. CONCLUSION: Iridial pigmentation and eyelash change occurred at a high frequency in long-term treatment with latanoprost in Japanese glaucoma patients.

Comparison of the effectiveness of scanning laser polarimetry and optical coherence tomography for estimating optic nerve fibre layer thickness in patients with glaucoma.

PURPOSE: The effectiveness of scanning laser polarimetry (by the nerve fibre analyser, NFA) and of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in estimating nerve fibre layer thickness (NFLT) and the correlations between NFLT and cup-to-disc (C/D) ratio or values of mean deviation (MD) from static visual field tests were compared using patients with glaucoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four eyes from 24 glaucoma patients were enrolled. The NFLT was measured along a circle with a diameter 1.5 times that of the optic disc around the optic disc. The averaged estimated NFLT of the circle or of each quadrantal NFLT (nasal, temporal, superior, inferior) was compared. RESULTS: The co-variant indexes measured by the NFA were significantly smaller than those measured by OCT in both the averaged NFLT (p = 0.0002) and in each quadrantal NFLT (p < 0.05). The C/D ratio was significantly correlated with the averaged NFLT when measured by OCT (r = 0.425, p = 0.038), but not by the NFA (r = 0.179, p = 0.407). However, when measured by OCT, these values showed a significant correlation (r = 0.425, p = 0.039). Although both the OCT and NFA data showed significant correlations between NFLT and the MD (p = 0.0002 and p = 0.038, respectively), the OCT data showed a stronger correlation than did the NFA data (r = 0.677 and r = 0.422, respectively). The correlation between the averaged NFLTs obtained by NFA and OCT was not significant (r = 0.289, p = 0.172). CONCLUSION: OCT is thought to have an equal or better effectiveness for estimating NFLT, in spite of a lower reproducibility than that of the NFA.

Variance between program versions in measuring optic nerve fiber layer thickness using optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE: To compare nerve fiber layer thickness (NFLT) in patients with glaucoma measured by two versions of an analysis program utilizing optical coherence tomography (OCT) with reference to the cup-to-disk (C/D) ratio and the mean deviation (MD) score of a static visual field test. METHODS: Twenty-four eyes from 24 glaucoma patients were enrolled. The NFLT was measured by OCT along a circle around the disk with the circle diameter being 1.5 times that of the disk itself. The NFLTs evaluated by the two versions A4.01 and A6.01 were compared with respect to the C/D ratio and MD score. RESULTS: The mean NFLTs evaluated by version A6.01 were 61.2% greater than those evaluated by version A4.01 (p < 0.001). The NFLTs in all quadrants evaluated by A6.01 were also greater than those evaluated by A4.01. Both A6.01 and A4.01 showed a significant correlation with the C/D ratio and MD score. Although A6.01 showed a better correlation with the C/D ratio than A4.01, both A4.01 and A6.01 showed similarly good correlations with MD. CONCLUSION: The NFLTs evaluated by the two versions differed significantly with regard to some parameters. These results should be taken into account in evaluating NFLTs when utilizing OCT.
