Bone loss preventing effect of Sophorae Fructus on ovariectomized rats.

The preventive effects of Sophorae Fructus extracts (I: hot water extract and II: combination product using I) on bone loss in ovariectomized (OVX) rats were investigated. Sophorae Fructus extracts were orally administrated to OVX rats for 9 weeks. Ovariectomy caused the increase of body weight and deoxypyridinoline (Dpd: bone resorption marker) and decrease of calcium (Ca: bone formation marker) level in serum. Dpd level were significantly decreased and Ca levels were elevated at 9 weeks in Sophorae Fructus extracts administered groups after ovariectomy at a dose of 0.556 g/kg/day compared with control group. In administered groups, trabecular bone area (TBA) in the tibia and lumbar were also increased compared with control group in histomorphological analysis. The preventive or treatment effects of Sophorae Fructus extracts on bone loss in OVX rats appears to be due to suppression of bone turnover.

Synchronization of chaos in unidirectionally coupled vertical-cavity surface-emitting semiconductor lasers.

Synchronization of chaos is achieved experimentally in unidirectionally coupled external-cavity vertical-cavity surface-emitting semiconductor lasers operating in an open-loop regime. Synchronization is observed when the polarization of the transmitter is perpendicular to the polarization (x polarization) of the free-running receiver. The ratio of transmitter output to y-polarized receiver output power shows normal (positive-slope) synchronization. However, inverse (negative-slope) synchronization is found to arise between the transmitter output and the x-polarized receiver output power.

Demonstration of a chaos generator with two time delays.

We demonstrate a chaos generator involving two time delays and two nonlinear functions. Dynamic behaviors are numerically and experimentally observed. The complexity of the dynamics is discussed in terms of Lyapunov exponents and dimensions. The setup can provide a new architecture for enhancing message security in chaos encryption systems.

Melanogenesis inhibitory activities of diarylheptanoids from Alnus hirsuta Turcz in B16 mouse melanoma cell.

Four diarylheptanoids, (5R-1,7-bis (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-heptane-5-O-beta-D-glucoside (1), (5R) 1,7-bis (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-heptane-5-ol (2), oregonin (3), hirsutanonol (4), were isolated from the bark of Alnus hirsuta Turcz and its inhibitory effects on melanogenesis by measuring the melanin level and tyrosinase activity in B16 melanoma cell were examined. Melanin level and tyrosinase activity were reduced to 75 to 85% by addition of diarylheptanoids to incubation medium of the melanoma cell. On the other hand, melanin level and tyrosinase activity were reduced to 13 to 43% by the addition of diarylheptanoids to incubation medium of the melanoma cell treated with melanogenesis stimulator, alpha-MSH and forskolin. These melanogenesis inhibitory effects were significantly different compared with control.
