Structures and vibrational spectra of the sulfur-rich oxides SnO (n = 4-9): the importance of pi*-pi* interactions.

The structures of a large number of isomers of the sulfur oxides S(n)O with n = 4-9 have been calculated at the G3X(MP2) level of theory. In most cases, homocyclic molecules with exocyclic oxygen atoms in an axial position are the global minimum structures. Perfect agreement is obtained with experimentally determined structures of S(7)O and S(8)O. The most stable S(4)O isomer as well as some less stable isomers of S(5)O and S(6)O are characterized by a strong pi*-pi* interaction between S==O and S==S groups, which results in relatively long S--S bonds with internuclear distances of 244-262 pm. Heterocyclic isomers are less stable than the global minimum structures, and this energy difference approximately increases with the ring size: 17 (S(4)O), 40 (S(5)O), 32 (S(6)O), 28 (S(7)O), 45 (S(8)O), and 54 kJ mol(-1) (S(9)O). Owing to a favorable pi*-pi* interaction, preference for an axial (or endo) conformation is calculated for the global energy minima of S(7)O, S(8)O, and S(9)O. Vapor-phase decomposition of S(n)O molecules to SO(2) and S(8) is strongly exothermic, whereas the formation of S(2)O and S(8) is exothermic if n<7, but slightly endothermic for S(7)O, S(8)O, and S(9)O. The calculated vibrational spectra of the most stable isomers of S(6)O, S(7)O, and S(8)O are in excellent agreement with the observed data.

Homolytic dissociation of the vulcanization accelerator tetramethylthiuram disulfide (TMTD) and structures and stabilities of the related radicals Me2NCSn* (n = 1-4).

The homolytic dissociation of the important vulcanization accelerator tetramethylthiuram disulfide (TMTD) has been studied by ab initio calculations according to the G3X(MP2) and G3X(MP2)-RAD theories. Homolytic cleavage of the SS bond requires a low enthalpy of 150.0 kJ mol-1, whereas 268.0 kJ mol-1 is needed for the dissociation of one of the C-S single bonds. To cleave one of the SS bonds of the corresponding trisulfide (TMTT) requires 191.1 kJ mol-1. Me2NCS2* is a particularly stable sulfur radical as reflected in the low S-H bond dissociation enthalpy of the corresponding acid Me2NC(=S)SH (301.7 kJ mol-1). Me2NCS2* (2B2) is a sigma radical characterized by the unpaired spin density shared equally between the two sulfur atoms and by a 4-center (NCS2) delocalized pi system. The ESR g-tensors of the radicals Me2NCSn* (n = 1-3) have been calculated. Both TMTD and the mentioned radicals form stable chelate complexes with a Li+ cation, which here serves as a model for the zinc ions used in accelerated rubber vulcanization. Although the binding energy of the complex [Li(TMTD)]+ is larger than that of the isomeric species [Li(S2CNMe2)2]+ (12), the dissociation enthalpy of TMTD as a ligand is smaller (125.5 kJ mol-1) than that of free TMTD. In other words, the homolytic dissociation of the SS bonds of TMTD is facilitated by the presence of Li+ ions. The sulfurization of TMTD in the presence of Li+ to give the paramagnetic complex [Li(S3CNMe2)2]+ is strongly exothermic. These results suggest that TMTD reacts with naked zinc ions as well as with the surface atoms of solid zinc oxide particles in an analogous manner producing highly reactive complexes, which probably initiate the crosslinking process during vulcanization reactions of natural or synthetic rubber accelerated by TMTD/ZnO.

Saturated hydrocarbon-benzene complexes: theoretical study of cooperative CH/pi interactions.

High-level ab initio calculations at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//MP2/aug(d,p)-6-311G(d,p) level were employed to investigate the cooperative CH/pi effects between the pi face of benzene and several modeled saturated hydrocarbons, propane, isobutane, cyclopropane, cyclobutane, cyclopentane, cyclohexane, cyclopentane, cyclooctane, and bicyclo[2.2.2]octane. In all cases, multiple C-H groups (2-4) are found to interact with the pi face of benzene, with one C-H group pointing close to the center of the benzene ring. The geometries of these complexes are governed predominantly by electrostatic interaction between the interacting systems. The calculated interaction energies (10-14 kJ mol(-1)) are 2-3 times larger than that of the prototypical methane-benzene complex. The trends of geometries, interaction energies, binding properties, as well as electron-density topological properties were analyzed. The calculated interaction energies correlate well with the polarizabilities of the hydrocarbons. AIM analysis confirms the hydrogen-bonded nature of the CH/pi interactions. Significant changes in proton chemical shift and stretching frequency (blue shift) are predicted for the ring C-H bond in these complexes.

S3O2--an unusual structure with pi*-pi* interaction.

The structures and relative stabilities of 15 S3O2 isomers have been investigated by G3X(MP2), CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ and MRCI/CASSCF calculations. The global energy minimum is a three-membered sulfur ring with two adjacent sulfoxide groups in a trans conformation, i.e. a vic-disulfoxide of C2 symmetry. The SS bond lengths are 2.136 (2x) and 2.354 angstroms at the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ level of theory. There is a strong interaction between the pi* orbitals of the two S=O moieties both in the trans and in the almost degenerate cis conformer. The corresponding chain-like singlet and triplet isomers of connectivity OSSSO lie close in energy (ca. 67 kJ mol(-1)) while five-membered and branched four-membered rings are significantly less stable. The structure of S3O2 is in contrast to that of the isoelectronic analogue S5, which exists as a five-membered twisted heterocycle.

Isomers of cyclo-heptasulfur and their coordination to Li(+): an ab initio molecular orbital study.

The potential energy hypersurfaces (PESs) of heptasulfur (S7) and of [LiS7]+ have been investigated by ab initio molecular orbital calculations at the G3X(MP2) level of theory. Besides the chair-like seven-membered ring (1a) as the global minimum structure, eight local minimum structures and one transition state have been located on the PES of S7. The barrier for pseudorotation of 1a is only 5.6 kJ mol(-1). The boat-like S7 ring (1b) is 12.1 kJ mol(-1) less stable than 1a, followed by three isomers of connectivity S6=S and four open-chain isomers. On the basis of multireference calculations at the MRCI(4,4)+Q/6-311G(d) level, the most stable open-chain form of S7 is a triplet of relative energy 133.1 kJ mol(-1). Thus, the reaction energy (deltaE0) for the ring opening of 1a is 133.1 kJ mol(-1), halfway between those of the highly symmetrical rings S6 and S8. Because of their strong multireference characters, the stabilities of the biradicalic singlet chains are significantly overestimated by the single-reference-based G3X(MP2) method. The calculated vibrational spectrum of 1a is in good agreement with experimental data. The various isomers of S7 form stable complexes with Li+ with coordination numbers of 1-4 for the metal atom and binding energies in the range of -93.8 to -165.7 kJ mol(-1). A total of 15 isomeric complexes have been located, with 13 of them containing cyclic ligands. The global minimum structure (2a) is composed of 1a, with the Li+ cation linked to the four negatively charged sulfur atoms (symmetry C(s)). The corresponding complex 2c containing the ligand 1b is by 23.4 kJ mol(-1) less stable than 2a, and a bicyclic crown-shaped LiS7 cation (2e) is by 34.9 kJ mol(-1) less stable than 2a. Even less stable are four complexes with the branched S6=S ligand. SS bond activation by polarization of the valence electrons takes place on coordination of Li+ to cyclo-S7 (1a).

Preparation and characterization of Cr(CO)(4)dpp (chromium tetracarbonyl 2,3-bis(2'-pyridyl)pyrazine) adsorbed on silver nanoparticles.

A transition metal carbonyl species, Cr(CO)(4)dpp, has been successfully attached to bare silver nanoparticles prepared by laser ablation of a metal foil in ethanol. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images have shown that at least a portion of the silver nanoparticles have been capped by the chromium species, and ligand shells corresponding to Cr(CO)(4)dpp multilayer adsorption onto the silver nanoparticles of 30-50 nm diameter have been observed. The detection of the strongest Raman-active nu(CO) band of Cr(CO)(4)dpp at 2004 cm(-1) revealed that the species has been adsorbed without decomposition. The time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) signals recorded of the chromium-capped silver nanoparticles were also consistent with the nondecomposition adsorption process. Density functional calculations have been used to reproduce the Raman spectrum using Ag(7)(+) as a model surface. A large binding energy of about 122 kJ/mol has also been computed between silver and nitrogen atoms thus lending support to Cr(CO)(4)dpp being chemisorbed onto the silver surface.

Roles of C-H...O=S and pi-stacking interactions in the 2-bromoacrolein complex with N-tosyl-(S)-tryptophan-derived oxazaborolidinone catalyst.

[structures: see text] Ab initio and density functional calculations were employed to examine the structures and binding energies of various complexes between 2-bromolacrolein and N-tosyl-(S)-tryptophan-derived B-butyl-1,3,2-oxazaborolidin-5-one (NTOB), a catalyst commonly used for Diels-Alder reactions. Our calculations show that the chiral oxazaborolidinone catalyst serves as a tridentate complexation agent via B...O donor-acceptor, C-H...O hydrogen-bonded, and pi-stacking interactions. The most stable complex (1TS) is predicted to have a binding energy of -93 kJ mol(-1) (deltaG(298) = -29 kJ mol(-1)). The formyl C-H...O hydrogen bond and pi-stacking interaction are the key factors governing the relative stabilities of the four acrolein-NTOB complexes examined. The calculated structure and binding properties of 1TS are consistent with the experimental results on the absorption spectrum of the acrolein-NTOB complex and the effects of substituents on the reactivity of Diels-Alder reactions. 1TS differs from Corey's proposed model of transition-state assembly in two aspects: (1) it involves the s-trans-acrolein and (2) it favors a C-H...O interaction via the sulfonyl oxygen (C-H...O=S), rather than the ring oxygen (C-H...O-B). This calculated structure of the acrolein-catalyst complex provides an alternate explanation of the origin of stereoselectivity in the NTOB-catalyzed Diels-Alder reactions.

Electrophilic attack on sulfur-sulfur bonds: coordination of lithium cations to sulfur-rich molecules studied by ab initio MO methods.

Complex formation between gaseous Li+ ions and sulfur-containing neutral ligands, such as H2S, Me2Sn (n = 1-5; Me = CH3) and various isomers of hexasulfur (S6), has been studied by ab initio MO calculations at the G3X(MP2) level of theory. Generally, the formation of LiS(n) heterocycles and clusters is preferred in these reactions. The binding energies of the cation in the 29 complexes investigated range from -88 kJ mol(-1) for [H2SLi]+ to -189 kJ mol(-1) for the most stable isomer of [Me2S5Li]+ which contains three-coordinate Li+. Of the various S6 ligands (chair, boat, prism, branched ring, and triplet chain structures), two isomeric complexes containing the S5==S ligand have the highest binding energies (-163+/-1 kJ mol(-1)). However, the global minimum structure of [LiS6]+ is of C(3v) symmetry with the six-membered S(6) homocycle in the well-known chair conformation and three Li--S bonds with a length of 256 pm (binding energy: -134 kJ mol(-1)). Relatively unstable isomers of S6 are stabilized by complex formation with Li+. The interaction between the cation and the S6 ligands is mainly attributed to ion-dipole attraction with a little charge transfer, except in cations containing the six sulfur atoms in the form of separated neutral S2, S3, or S4 units, as in [Li(S3)2]+ and [Li(S2)(S4)]+. In the two most stable isomers of the [LiS6]+ complexes, the number of S--S bonds is at maximum and the coordination number of Li+ is either 3 or 4. A topological analysis of all investigated complexes revealed that the Li--S bonds of lengths below 280 pm are characterized by a maximum electron-density path and closed-shell interaction.

Facile uncatalyzed mukaiyama aldol reactions: an ab initio study of the effects of substituents.

High-level ab initio molecular orbital calculations at the G3(MP2) level of theory were carried out to investigate the effects of substituents on the energetics of the uncatalyzed Mukaiyama aldol reaction between trihydrosilyl enol ether and formaldehyde. The concerted pathway, via a twist-boat six-membered ring transition state, is strongly favored over the stepwise pathway which involves a four-membered ring oxetane intermediate. Six substituents (CH(3), NH(2), OH, F, SH, and CHO) on trihydrosilyl enol ether and eight substituents (CH(3), CF(3), NH(2), F, CHO, COOCH(3), CH=CH(2), and C(6)H(5)) on formaldehyde were considered. We find that the reaction exothermicity is the main factor that dominates reactivity. The calculated barriers vary considerably from 30 to 131 kJ mol(-1). With the exception of halogen substitution, the nucleophilicity of silyl enol ether and the electrophilicity of the aldehyde are important in promoting the reactivity of this class of aldol addition. The roles of frontier molecular orbital interactions and electrostatic interactions are also discussed. In addition, our study has revealed that employing substituents on both reactants can act in a cooperatively manner to reduce the activation barrier further. In particular, we predict that the reactions between NH(2)-substituted enol silane and CHO-, COOCH(3)-, and CF(3)-substituted aldehydes have remarkably low barriers (<12 kJ mol(-1)). Thus, these reactions may proceed readily without a catalyst below room temperature. Several substitutions on the silicon group, namely SiF(3), SiCl(3), SiMe(3), and silacyclobutyl, were considered. In agreement with experiment, the O-(silacyclobutyl) and O-(trichlorosilyl) derivatives are found to promote aldol reactivity.

povel isomers of hexasulfur: Prediction of a stable prism isomer and implications for the thermal reactivity of elemental sulfur.

High-level ab initio molecular orbital calculations were employed to explore the potential energy hypersurface of hexasulfur, S(6). Twelve isomeric structures of S(6) have been identified: two unbranched rings (chair and boat), one trigonal prism of D(3h) symmetry, two singly branched rings (S(5)double bondS), three triplet chains, one singlet chain, and three doubly branched rings (Sdouble bondS(4)double bondS). The prism structure is essentially a cluster of three S(2) molecules connected via a six-center pi(*)-pi(*)-pi(*) interaction. It is by 51 kJ mol(-1) less stable than the lowest-energy chair form. The reactions to generate the boat, the prism, and the singly branched isomers from the chair form are predicted to have lower barriers than the ring opening reaction of cyclo-S(6), which requires an activation energy of 149 kJ mol(-1). The prism and singly branched isomers are found to be more reactive species than the chair form and they are potential sources of S(2) in chemical reactions involving elemental sulfur.

Tautomeric equilibria of pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (vitamin B6) and 3-hydroxypyridine derivatives: a theoretical study of solvation effects.

The tautomeric equilibria of a series of 3-hydroxypyridine derivatives including pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP), the active form of vitamin B(6), have been studied using density functional calculations (B3LYP/6-311+G//B3LYP/6-31G) in the gas phase and in different solvents. Three different approaches, namely continuum, discrete, and hybrid (combined discrete/SCRF), were employed to investigate the effects of solvation on the tautomeric equilibria. In all cases, the neutral hydroxy form is significantly more stable than the zwitterionic oxo form (by 43-56 kJ mol(-)(1)) in the gas phase. The tautomeric energies reduce substantially in the presence of a polarizable dielectric medium. However, the neutral form is calculated to be the dominant form in nonpolar and aprotic polar solvents. On the other hand, a reversal of tautomeric equilibrium, in favor of the zwitterionic form, is predicted in an aqueous medium. This study highlights the role of both water molecules and bulk solvent effect in influencing the tautomeric equilibria of the PLP related compounds. A combination of explicit microsolvation and continuum reaction field is required to account fully for the energetic effect of aqueous solvation. The tautomeric free energy differences (deltaG(298)) of PLP in the gas phase and in aprotic polar (epsilon = 40) and aqueous media are predicted to be 47, 22, and -29 kJ mol(-)(1), respectively.

2-pyrazinylnitrene and 4-pyrimidylnitrene. Ring expansion to 1,3,5-triazacyclohepta-1,2,4,6-tetraene and ring opening to (2-Isocyanovinyl)carbodiimide.

Tetrazolo[1,5-a]pyrazine/2-azidopyrazine 9T/9A undergo photolysis in Ar matrix at cryogenic temperatures to yield 1,3,5-triazacyclohepta-1,2,4,6-tetraene 21 as the first observable intermediate, and 1-cyanoimidazole 11 and (2-isocyanovinyl)carbodiimide 22 as the final products. The latter tautomerizes to 2-(isocyanovinyl)cyanamide 23 on warming to 40 K. The same intermediate 21 and the same final products are obtained on matrix photolysis of the isomeric tetrazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidine/4-azidopyrimidine 24T/24A. These photolysis results as well as those of the previously reported thermal ring contraction of (15)N-labeled 2-pyrazinyl- and 4-pyrimidylnitrenes to 1-cyanoimidazoles can all be rationalized in terms of selective ring opening of 21 or nitrine 10 to a nitrile ylide zwitterion 28 prior to formation of the final products, 11 and 22. The results are supported by high-level ab initio and DFT calculations (CASPT2-CASSCF(6,6), G3(MP2), and B3LYP/6-31+G) of the energies and IR spectra of the intermediates and products.

Atomic properties of N(2)O(4) based on its experimental charge density.

Nitrogen dioxide, being known to exist as a dimer N2O4 in the crystal with a very long N-N bond length of 1.76 A, was crystallized at low-temperature conditions on a diffractometer. High-resolution X-ray data (sin(theta/lambda) = 1.249 A-1) were recorded with a CCD area detector to allow the generation of an experimental charge density distribution. By making use of Bader's AIM theory, zero-flux surfaces were calculated, and we examined atomic volumes and atomic charges obtained from this experiment and various theoretical calculations. Four commonly used methods of computing atomic charges (Mulliken, AIM, NPA, and CHELP) were considered. The AIM charges are rather independent from the used basis set. Interestingly, the evaluated atomic volumes are very similar between experiment and theory, although in theory isolated molecules are considered. For the long N-N bond a bond order n of approximately 0.5 was derived from a comparison with appropriate model compounds.

The thermal decomposition of thiirane: a mechanistic study by ab initio MO theory.

Using high-level ab initio MO methods, we have identified two reaction pathways with different thermodynamic and kinetic properties for the thermal decomposition of the three-membered heterocycle thiirane (C2H4S) and related derivatives. A homolytic ring opening, followed by attack of the generated diradical on another thiirane molecule, and subsequent elimination of ethene in a fast radical chain reaction results in the formation of disulfur molecules in their triplet ground state (3S2) and requires activation enthalpies of deltaH#(298) = 222 kJ mol(-1) and deltaG#(298) = 212 kJ mol(-1). This reaction mechanism would result in a first-order rate law in agreement with one reported gas-phase experiment but does neither match the experimental activation energy nor does it explain the observed retention of the stereochemical configuration in the thermal decomposition of certain substituted thiiranes. Alternatively, sulfur atoms can be transferred from one thiirane moleculeto another with the intermediate formation of thiirane 1-sulfide (C2H4S2). This molecule can either decompose unimolecularly to ethene and disulfur in its excited singlet state (1S2) or, by means of spin crossover, S2 in its triplet ground state may be formed. On the other hand, the thiirane 1-sulfide may react with itself and transfer one sulfur atom from one molecule to another with formation of thiirane 1,1-disulfide (C2H4S3), which is an analogue of thiirane sulfone; thiirane is formed as the second product. The 1,1-disulfide may then decompose to ethene and S3. In still another bimolecular reaction, the thiirane 1-sulfide may react with itself in a strongly exothermic reaction to give S4 and two equivalents of ethene. This series of reactions results in a second-order rate law and requires activation enthalpies of deltaH#(298) = 109 kJ mol(-1) and deltaG#(298) = 144 kJ mol(-1) for the formation of thiirane 1-sulfide, while the consecutive reactions require less activation enthalpy. Elemental sulfur (S8) is eventually formed by oligomerization of either S2, S3, or S4 in spin-allowed reactions. These findings are in agreement with most experimental data on the thermal desulfurization of thiirane and its substituted derivatives. Thiirane 1-persulfide (C2H4S3) with a linear arrangement of the three sulfur atoms as well as zwitterions and radicals derived from thiirane are not likely to be intermediates in the thermal decomposition of episulfides.

Cyanoketene and Iminopropadienones.

Cyanoketene (8) is generated in high yields on flash vacuum thermolysis (FVT) of suitably substituted Meldrum's acid derivatives (5-[(alkylamino)(methylthio or alkylamino)methylene]-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-diones) (3e-j), and also on FVT of cyanoacetic acid derivatives 9e,f,g,j,k,m. The major reaction pathway from 3 proceeds via ketenimines 6 and (alkylimino)propadienones 7, the latter undergoing a retro-ene reaction to 8. A minor pathway is via imidoylketenes 4e,h and oxoketenimines 5e,h, which undergo retro-ene reactions to 9. All intermediates were characterized by Ar matrix FTIR and tandem mass spectrometry (collisional activation MS). Trapping of 4, 5, and 8 with nucleophiles is also reported. The preference of 1,3-X shifts over 1,5-H shifts in imidoylketenes 12 (X = SMe or NMe(2)) is corroborated by the calculated activation barriers. Neat cyanoketene is highly reactive, reacting at or below 80 K, and this is attributed to the availability of a low-lying ketene LUMO. The IR spectrum of cyanoketene (Ar, 14 K) is dominated by two absorptions at 2163 (s; C=C=O) and 2239 (w; CN) cm(-)(1) in excellent agreement with density functional (B3-LYP/6-31G) and ab initio (QCISD/6-31G) calculations.

Facile 1,3- and 1,5-Chlorine Migration.

High-level ab initio molecular orbital calculations, using the G2(MP2,SVP) theory (and semiempirical methods) have been used to examine several 1,3- and 1,5-chlorine migrations. It is found that the interaction of chlorine lone pair electrons with a low-lying LUMO accelerates the Cl shift dramatically (lone pair-LUMO-mediated pericyclic reaction). The activation barriers for the 1,3-migration in chloro oxo ketene 1 (Cl(C=O)CH=C=O) and the 1,5-migration in (2-(chlorocarbonyl)vinyl)ketene 2 (Cl(C=O)CH=CHCH=C=O) are only 53 and 61 kJ mol(-)(1), respectively, compared to the 216 and 173 kJ mol(-)(1) barriers for the corresponding unassisted 1,3- and 1,5-sigmatropic shifts of Cl in 3-chloro-1-propene and 5-chloro-1,3-pentadiene. The transition structures for 1 and 2 reveal that migration of the chlorine atoms takes place in the molecular planes. The 1,5-chlorine shift in 6-chlorocyclohexa-2,4-dienone (3) has a significantly higher barrier due to a lack of appropriate orbital interaction. The related 1,3-shift in the (chlorocarbonyl)imine-alpha-chloro isocyanate system is also dramatically accelerated compared with conventional pericyclic 1,3-Cl migration.
