Triangular assembly through charged hydrogen bonds in polar solvent.

We have demonstrated a triangular assembly driven by 12 charged hydrogen bonds and pi-pi interactions. This assembly is stable even in polar solvents because of its charged hydrogen-bond nature. Helical arrangement of the complex is confirmed by its crystal structure. A solution structure is assigned to the D(3) isomer corresponding to the solid-state structure by temperature-dependent (1)H NMR experiments.

Steric control of a bridging ligand for high-nuclearity metallamacrocycle formation: a highly puckered 60-membered icosanuclear metalladiazamacrocycle.

A novel S4-symmetric icosanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycle was synthesized using a pentadentate ligand, N-3-phenyl-trans-2-propenoylsalicylhydrazide (H3L), that has a rigid and bulky terminal N-acyl group. A 20 cyclic repeat of an--(Mn-N-N)--linkage resulted in a highly puckered diaza-bridged 60-membered icosanuclear metallamacrocycle. The steric interaction between the ligands in the cyclic system leads to five consecutive Mn(III) centers in a chemically different--(Mn(A)Mn(B)Mn(C)Mn(D)Mn(E))--environment, with the chiralities of the metal centers being in a rather complicated--(LambdaLambdaDeltaLambdaLambda)(DeltaDeltaLambdaDeltaDelta)--sequence.

Assembly of a heterobinuclear 2-D network: a rare example of endo- and exocyclic coordination of Pd(II)/Ag(I) in a single macrocycle.

The S3O2 macrocycle L1 was synthesized by a dithiol-dihalide coupling reaction under high-dilution conditions. The reaction of L1 with K2PdCl4 afforded an exocoordinated complex 1, [cis-Cl2Pd(L1)], which can then be manipulated to provide a heterobinuclear complex 3, {[Pd(L1)Ag(NO3)(2.5)](NO3)(0.5)}n, utilizing endocyclic Pd(II) and exocyclic Ag(I) in a single macrocycle through a successive reaction with AgNO3. The network of 3 contains a unique honeycomb-like 2-D sheet made up of the repeating unit [Ag6(NO3)6].

Origin of the diastereoselection in the indium-mediated addition of haloallylic sulfones to aldehydes.

[reaction: see text] The R(1) substituents at C(2) of the haloallylic sulfones 1 play a pivotal role in controlling the diastereoselectivity of the indium-mediated addition reaction to benzaldehyde to produce the homoallylic alcohols 3. The R(1) Me group of 1 prefers the chair form in the In-coordinated six-membered cyclic transition state to give anti-3a, and the R(1) Ph group of 1 favors the twist boat form to give syn-3n, both in a high 13:1 selectivity.

Face-driven corner-linked octahedral nanocages: M6L8 cages formed by C3-symmetric triangular facial ligands linked via C4-symmetric square tetratopic Pd(II) ions at truncated octahedron corners.

The face-driven corner-linked truncated octahedral nanocages, [Pd6L8]12+ (1, L1 = N,N',N' '-tris(3-pyridinyl)-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxamide; 2, L2 = N,N',N' '-tris(4-pyridinylmethyl)-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxamide), were prepared with eight C3-symmetric tridentate ligands and six square planar tetratopic palladium(II) ions. The combination of the nitrogen donor atom at a approximately 120 degrees kink position of the carboxamido pyridinyl group and the tilted pyridyl versus the facial plane of the ligands can provide the needed curvature for the formation of octahedral cages. The nitrogen atoms can coordinate to the square planar palladium(II) ions to form kinks with approximately 120 degrees angles at the C4-symmetric square planar corners of the truncated octahedron. Depending on the conformation of the ligand, L1, two different truncated octahedral cages of around 2.4 nm in diameters were formed. The major form of 1 with syn-conformational ligands has a cavity volume of approximately 1600 A3. The cage has 12 ports (3.4 x 3.5 A2) at all edges of the octahedron. The minor form of cage 1 with anti-conformational ligands has a slightly increased cavity volume ( approximately 1900 A3) and port size (3.3 x 8.0 A2). The insertion of a methylene group in L2 has not only increased the cavity volume of 2 to approximately 2200 A3 but also enlarged the port size to 4.1 x 8.0 A2. However, an atomic force microscopy (AFM) study of cage 2 showed that the cages had a height of 1.8 +/- 0.1 nm. This value is about 30% smaller than the calculated size of 2.6 nm from the crystal structure. This tip-induced decrease in height in cage 2 suggests the nonrigidity of cage 2.

Modulation of the ring size and nuclearity of metallamacrocycles via the steric effect of ligands: preparation and characterization of 18-membered hexanuclear, 24-membered octanuclear, and 30-membered decanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycles with alpha- and beta-branched N-acylsalicylhydrazides.

Hexanuclear, octanuclear, and decanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycles have been prepared by reacting a series of pentadentate ligands, N-acylsalicylhydrazides (N-(3-methylbutanoyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)3-mbshz), N-(phenylacetyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)pashz), N-(3,3-dimethylbutanoyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)3-dmbshz), N-(2-methylpropanoyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)2-mpshz), N-((R,S)-2-methylbutanoyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)RS-2-mbshz), N-((S)-2-methylbutanoyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)S-2-mbshz), and N-(2,2-dimethylpropanoyl)salicylhydrazide (H(3)2-dmpshz)), with manganese(II) acetate tetrahydrate. The self-assembled, supramolecular complexes assume a nearly planar cyclic structure with an -(Mn-N-N)(n) backbone and measure approximately 2.1, approximately 2.3, and approximately 2.6 nm in outer diameters for n = 6, 8, and 10, respectively. The chiralities of the manganese centers on the metalladiazamacrocycle occur in alternating ...LambdaDeltaLambdaDelta... configurations. While beta-branched N-acylsalicylhydrazides (H(3)3-mbshz, H(3)pashz, H(3)3-dmbshz) with a sterically flexible Calpha methylene group yield 18-membered hexanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycles of S(6) point group symmetry, alpha-branched N-acylsalicylhydrazides lead to 24-membered octanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycles or 30-membered decanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycles depending on the size of the N-acyl substituents. The alpha-branched H(3)2-mpshz ligand with the sterically least demanding isopropyl tail at the N-acyl position yields a 24-membered octanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycle of S(8) point group symmetry, but other alpha-branched N-acylsalicylhydrazides such as H(3)RS-2-mbshz, H(3)S-2-mbshz, and H(3)2-dmpshz lead to 30-membered decanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycles of S(10) point group symmetry. The magnetic properties of the metalladiazamacrocycles are characterized by a weak antiferromagnetic exchange interaction, with J(eff) = -8.5 to -3.8 K between the Mn(3+) ion spins with S = 2 in the cyclic system.

Stereoselective synthesis of (+)-SCH 351448: a unique ligand system for sodium, calcium, and other cations.

(+)-SCH 351448 (Na+ salt A) was synthesized employing ring-closing olefin metathesis reaction of an open diene diester intermediate for construction of the 28-membered macrodiolide structure. The open diene diester was prepared from the monomeric hydroxy carboxylic acid and two different olefin fragments. The monomeric hydroxy acid was synthesized via Julia-Julia coupling reaction of intermediates derived from the same olefinic fragments. Oxane units in these fragments were prepared by radical cyclization reactions of beta-alkoxyacrylates. Analogous SCH 351448 salts incorporating other mono- and divalent cations may be prepared. Under acidic conditions, SCH 351448 (Na+ salt A) was the most stable complex, but SCH 351448 (Ca2+ salt) and (Na+ salt B) appear to be physiologically important species.

Size and shape selectivity of host networks built based on tunable secondary building units.

By modulating the secondary building units derived from the primary building units, N-acylsalicylhydrazides (H3 xshz), we have been able to construct isostructural but tunable host networks, [Mn6(xshz)6(dmf)2(bpea)2], with different cavity sizes and shapes where the secondary building units, [Mn6(xshz)6], were linked through exo-bidentate bridging ligand, 1,2-bis(pyridyl)ethane (bpea) to form 3-D networks. With a short length linear N-acyl side chain at the primary building unit, the host networks have a 3-D network with three-dimensional cavities. With an appropriate length linear N-acyl side chain at the primary building unit, the host network keeps the isostructural 3-D network but with two types of one-dimensional channels of reduced cavity volume. The tuned host networks showed not only size selectivity for the guest molecules but also shape selectivity. While the three-dimensional channeled host showed selectivity depending on the length of the podal guests, the one-dimensional channeled host showed selectivity depending on both the length and/or the podality of the guest molecules.

A linear trinuclear mixed valence vanadium(V/IV/V) complex: synthesis, characterization, and solution behavior.

The reaction between vanadium(III) acetylacetonate and N-hexanoylsalicylhydrazide (H3hshz) yields a linear trinuclear mixed valence vanadium(V/IV/V) complex, V3O3(hshz)2(OEt)2, 1 (where hshz3- is a triply deprotonated trianionic N-hexanoyl salicylichydrazidate), with a pseudo C2 symmetry. A V(IV)O2+ group is at the center of complex 1 and is spanned by two terminal vanadium(V) ions with a square pyramidal geometry bridged via hydrazido ligands. In the crystalline form, the oxo group of the central vanadium(IV) ion is weakly coordinated to one of the terminal square pyramidal vanadium(V) ions of the neighboring trinuclear complex to form a dimeric structure. These dimers are linked via bis mu-alkoxo bridges to form a one-dimensional zigzag chain structure. In chloroform or methylene dichloride, the weak linkages between the trinuclear complexes present in the crystalline form are broken, and only the mixed valence trinuclear complex can be identified. In dimethyl sulfoxide or dimethylformamide, the trinuclear complex partially dissociates, and the unligated ligands remain in equilibrium with the trinuclear complex.

Three-dimensional helical coordination networks of a hexanuclear manganese metallamacrocycle as a helical tecton.

We report on helical coordination networks that were prepared using a hexanuclear manganese metallamacrocycle as a helical tecton. We were able to prepare the three-dimensional helical coordination networks using a hexanuclear manganese metallamacrocycle, [Mn(6)(lshz)(6)], as a helical tecton, where N-lauroyl salicylhydrazide (H(3)lshz) was used as the primary building unit to generate the helical tecton as a secondary building unit. While the 4(1)/4(3) screw symmetry-linked helical coordination network was obtained when the primary building units had an N-acetyl group, both the 3(1)/3(2) screw symmetry-linked and the 4(1)/4(3) screw symmetry-linked helical coordination networks were obtained simultaneously in the same batch when the primary building unit had a long alkyl N-lauroyl group at the N-acetyl site.

Dynamic equilibrium between a supramolecular capsule and bowl generated by inter- and intramolecular metal clipping.

The metal-induced self-assembly of a resorcin[4]arene derivative 1 that has four pyridine units as pendent groups and two equivalents of [M(dppp)(OTf)(2)] (M=Pd, Pt) results in a dynamic equilibrium between an interclipped supramolecular capsule 3 and an intraclipped bowl 4 in nitromethane, although the interclipped capsule 3 is formed as a sole adduct in chloroform/methanol and the intraclipped bowl 4 is formed exclusively in an aqueous phase. This demonstrates how metal-induced self-assembly can be tuned by subtle changes in the solvent system. The coexistence of the two structures in nitromethane was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and coldspray ionization mass spectrometry (CSI-MS). The crystal structure of the interclipped capsule 3 b, which is composed of two units of ligand 1 and four Pt(II) ions, reveals the capsule cavity to have nanoscale dimensions of 15x20 A. NMR spectra show that the dynamic equilibrium between 3 and 4 is dependent on concentration and temperature. Temperature-dependent (1)H NMR spectroscopy was carried out from 273 to 343 K to verify the thermodynamic parameters that control the dynamic equilibrium process; the conversion from the interclipped supramolecular capsule 3 a to the intraclipped bowl 4 a is entropically favored and enthalpically disfavored. The rotational barrier of the restricted rotation of pyridine units in the intraclipped bowl 4 was determined by line-shape analysis.

Oligobisvelcraplex: self-assembled linear oligomer by solvophobic pi-pistacking interaction of bisvelcrands based on resorcin[4]arene.

[reaction: see text] Bisvelcrand 3 based on resorcin[4]arene was obtained by a stepwise route, and the formation of oligobisvelcraplex 3(n) by solvophobic pi-pistacking interaction was observed. (1)H NMR spectroscopic studies revealed that DeltaG(++)(pseudorotation) of oligobisvelcraplex 3(n) is 16.7 kcal mol(-1) in C(6)D(5)NO(2) solution. The pulsed field gradient spin-echo (PGSE) NMR experiment and VPO experiment showed that the number of aggregation (n) ranges from 7 to 10 in CHCl(3) solution at 298 K. In high concentration, bisvelcrand 3 tends to form gels or fiber.

Novel 36-membered dodecanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycle.

A novel dodecanuclear manganese metalladiazamacrocycle was synthesized employing a new pentadentate ligand N-2-pentenoylsalicylhydrazide (H(3)tpeshz) by supramolecular self-assembly. The backbone of this metal-organic assembly is a repeating unit of an M-N-N-M linkage that extends to complete a 36-membered cyclic structure involving 12 manganese(III) centers. Successive manganese centers are in a chemically different ...ABABAB...-type environment while the chirality varies as ...LambdaLambdaDeltaDeltaLambdaLambda... . The unique arrangement of manganese centers results in a highly puckered metalladiazamacrocycle with an S(6)-point group symmetry.
