[A program of prevention of hereditary lysosomal diseases in the USSR].

The organization of genetic counselling for the families of patients with lysosomal storage diseases (LSD) was based on the interaction of the genetic counselling units of this country with a laboratory of inherited metabolic diseases of the National Research Center of Medical Genetics, USSR AMS. All the patients from 705 families at risk were examined using biochemical techniques and methods of somatic cell genetics. In total the loci differentiation was performed for 309 patients with mucopolysaccharidoses, glycoproteinoses, mucolipidoses, sphingolipidoses and other LSD. 53 families at risk (of 277) were prenatally diagnosed. 66 fetuses were diagnosed for mucopolysaccharidoses, type I, II, III, A and B, VI, Tay-Sachs disease, Sandhoff's disease, GM1-gangliosidosis, metachromatic leukodystrophy, mannosidosis, and multiple sulfatidosis. In total 18 affected fetuses were diagnosed and aborted. All the prenatal diagnoses were verified. The prevalence of mucopolysaccharidoses in two Central Asian republics was evaluated as 1:15,000. An Uneven ethnic distribution of different mucopolysaccharides in the USSR has also been shown.

Female

[Leprechaunism].

A course of leprechaunism is described in a 6-month-old girl who died of cachexia in the presence of generalized cytomegalia and myocardial metabolic derangement caused by cardiac arterial calcinosis. Proband sib aged 7 suffered from deaf-mutism and imbecility. There were multiple deformities of the face and body, skin hyperkeratosis with papillomatosis and melanoderma, hirsutism, pseudohermaphroditism, breast hyperplasia, normal serum glucose. Ovarian polycystosis and nephromegaly were detected at autopsy. Histologically, there appeared nesidioblastosis, Leydig's cells focal hyperplasia in the ovaries, cystic renal dysplasia calcinosis of cardiac arteries, those of mesentery of the small intestine, spleen, pancreas and thyroid gland. The final diagnosis was established on the basis of the whole complex of clinical and morphological signs.

Abnormalities, Multiple

[Characteristics of the late components in somatosensory evoked potentials of patients with a pain syndrome in spinal cord involvement].

In spinal trauma patients SSEPs were studied under median carpal nerve stimulation. In cases with pain syndrome, late SSEP waves (180-280 ms) were more pronounced as related to control group of patients without pain and to normal subjects. Psychoemotional personality scaling (MMPI) revealed the increased levels in the first three scales (s.c. "neurotic triad") in the pain group. A correlation was found between the late (P227) SSEP waves and the "neurotic triad" in MMPI.

Adolescent

[Development of a transplantable mammary gland cancer in rats at different thyroid hormone levels].

In experiments on female rats of various age the authors studied the effect of thyroid hormones on the growth of the mammary gland transplantable cancer. In young animals the percentage of spontaneous tumor regression and the survival were found to increase with age, synchronously with a rise in blood thyroxine level. Injection of thyroxine in a dose of 5 mkg into 2-month old animals induces marked inhibition of the growth, and in later terms a complete tumor regression in 78% of cases. In thyroidectomized rats a rapid tumor growth was terminated by death in all animals of this series. It is the authors' opinion that thyroid hormones stimulate the transplantation immunity, correct the functioning of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-genital system.

Age Factors

[Relationship between androgenization and differentiation of hypothalamic centers].

Dependence of the sterilizing action of androgen on differentiation of the hypothalamic centers was studied during the postnatal development of female rats. Asynhronous differentiation in the development of the arcuate nucleus (tonic centre) and suprachiasmatic nucleus (cyclic centre) was observed. Neurocytes of the arcuate nucleus started to produce secretory granules in 20-day embryos, while in the suprachiasmatic nucleus the neurocytes with secretory granules appeared in 5--7-day rats. Injection of testosterone propionate induced an anovulatory cycle in females the first 7 days after birth; this is associated with the inhibition of development of the hypothalamic cyclic centre.

Age Factors

[Isolation and certain properties of human pituitary prolactin].

A simple method of isolation of highly purified prolactin from acetonated preparations of anterior hypophysial lobes is described. The new method permits to obtain higher (about 10-fold) yields of the hormone, as compared to those obtained using previously described methods. Prolactin was extracted by acid aqueous acetone and was subsequently purified of extract by fractionation with acetone and NaCl and by isoelectric precipitation. The final stage of the hormone purification involved gel-filtration through Sephadex G-200; prolactin yield was 400 microgram per 1 hypophysis. The lactogenic activity of the hormone is 14 MU/mg; the sequence of N-terminal amino acid residues of prolactin is as follows: NH2-Leu-Pro-Ile-x-Pro-Leu(?)-Gly-Ala-.

Acetone

[A set of special devices made of polymer INPOLIN material for the treatment of cavernous tuberculosis].

The kit INPOLIN is intended for the local therapy of a tuberculosis cavern by spraying its walls with the powdery medicinal preparation. The kit includes a trochar for the cavern puncture, a device for the long-term fixation of the trochar tube in the cavern, a superchanging device with a spray and catheters. INPOLIN is intended for one course of treatment. The article describes the design of the instruments, their technical characteristics and the methods of using them.

Aerosols

The hypothalamo-hypophyseal system in female rats with an anovulatory cycle.

An electron-microscopic study was made of the suprachiasmatic and acurate nuclei of the hypothalamus, the intermediate and anterior lobes of the hypophysis in infertile female rats, sterilized by one injection of testosterone propionate in the critical period of their sexual development. Deformed synapses were detected on the bodies of the neurocytes of the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the accumulation of secretory granules and synaptoid vesicles in the nerve terminals of the intermediate lobe, and an intensive formation of secretion by the prolactin-producing adenocytes of the hypophysis. The mechanism of the masculinizing effect of androgens at the level of the hypothalamus and the possibility of correction of the anovulatory cycle in sterile females are discussed.
