[A computing laboratory-clinical system in the screening of malignant tumors: study of the state of the antioxidant system and level of cellular proliferation markers among the population from the Chernobyl AES accident area].

The author bases and describes the computing laboratory and clinical system for screening groups at a higher risk for malignant neoplasms whose incidence is likely to increase due to irradiation. Two years after the disaster the detected group at a higher risk was 2-2.4 times larger than the control group among persons who received the total irradiation dose 5 rem and over as well as among persons who are to be removed from the area polluted with radionuclides whatever the dose. As the time elapsed since the disaster increases, the number of subjects with a higher level of biomarkers also grows. It is advisable that this system be introduced in all fields of the practical health care in the polluted and control areas to carry out goal-oriented treatment and diagnostic measures in the selected population groups.

[The importance of a sequence of laboratory diagnostic micromethods in detecting tumors in subjects with complaints of functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract].

The paper is concerned with the diagnostic value of a complex of laboratory micromethods for detection of tumors which were used in 421 subjects who had been endoscopically examined for gastrointestinal discomfort. The methods assured correct diagnosis in 61.1% and gave false-positive results in 35.6%. Ninety-seven percent of the latter group showed preneoplastic lesions of the stomach which must be followed up. Half of the patients with preneoplastic lesions of the stomach revealed changes in the physico-chemical properties of blood similar to those observed in gastric cancer patients. False-negative results were obtained in 3.8% of the whole group (far-advanced cancer). The sensitivity of the suggested complex of micromethods for gastric cancer detection was 86%, reliability--61 and specificity--52%.

[A method of diagnosing malignant neoplasms based on the natural fluorescence of the blood serum in the ultraviolet and visible regions of the spectrum].

The paper discusses a physico-chemical method for cancer diagnosis by evaluating fluorescence intensity of blood serum in ultraviolet and visible spectra excited by 313-317 nm wavelength monochromatic light. The procedure elicited as much diagnostic evidence as blood-CEA level determination but proved much cheaper, more time-saving and causing less discomfort to the patient. The reliability, sensitivity and specificity of the method in diagnosis of tumors of various histogenesis and site are discussed.

[Treatment of the complications occurring in BCG vaccine immunotherapy of patients with malignant neoplasms].

The results of nonspecific immunotherapy with BCG vaccine in 98 cases of melanoma, breast cancer and other malignancies were used in evaluating the frequency and degree of side-effects and complications arising in cancer patients during this treatment. The procedure proved to be safe irrespective of patients' age. Prevention and treatment of side-effects such as fever, water-salt disorders, anorexia, interstitial hepatitis and promotion of tumor growth are discussed.

[The late results of the combined treatment of kidney cancer patients].

Randomized study with inclusion of certain types of immunotherapy in the schedule of complex treatment was conducted in 89 patients with kidney carcinoma after the operation. In 63 patients the tumor was in stage T3N0M0. The patients were separated into 4 groups after the operation. Group 1 consisted of 23 patients in whom no additional therapeutic measures were applied in the postoperative period; 8-year survival was 48%. Group 2 was made up of 23 patients who received immunotherapy with the BCG vaccine in the postoperative period; 8-year survival was 60.5%. Group 3 consisted of 9 patients who were given levamisole for immunotherapy in the postoperative period; 8-year survival was 44%. Group 4 consisted of 8 patients who were treated by a combined method in the postoperative period: administration of the BCG vaccine, a placental suspension, and cyclophosphamide; 8-year survival was 75%. Multiple metastases occurred in 26 patients. Nineteen patients did not receive additional treatment in the postoperative period; 2 patients survived for 1 year, none of the patients lived longer than 2 years. Seven patients were given immunotherapy with the BCG vaccine in the postoperative period; 6 patients survived 1 year, 4 patients--2 years. Measures for increasing the activity of the immune and macrophagal systems should be included in the schedule of complex treatment for patients with carcinoma of the kidney.
