Integrative and replicative transformation of Penicillium canescens with a heterologous nitrate-reductase gene.

A wild isolate of Penicillium canescens was subjected to mutagenesis, and 150 chlorate-resistant mutants were isolated and classified in respect of their ability to utilize various nitrogen sources. Strains supposedly deficient in nitrate reductase have been transformed with the nitrate-reductase gene from Aspergillus niger. Transformation probably occurred by non-homologous integration of the transforming vector into the chromosome. Co-transformation with the AMA 1 replicating element from A. nidulans enhanced transformation frequency up to 2000-fold, and was shown to result in autonomous maintenance of replicating concatenates, one of which was re-isolated by transformation of E. coli.

[Problems and prospects of establishing regional perinatology centers].

The paper provides a theoretical model of a regional perinatal centre based on many years of authors' practical experience in nursing newborns at high risk of perinatal pathology and also on international experience in the performance of similar centres and on multilevel system at large. The data are provided on the structure and functions of perinatal institutions, their equipment, manpower training, the system of management and possible economic provision.

[Characteristics of left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with different forms of arterial hypertension based on echocardiographic data].

Echocardiographic investigation of 110 patients with different forms of stable arterial hypertension demonstrated a moderately close correlation between left-ventricular myocardial weight, and systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension and chronic diffuse glomerulonephritis, and a weak correlation between left-ventricular myocardial weight and systolic pressure in patients with renovascular hypertension and chronic unilateral or predominantly unilateral pyelonephritis. Inadequate left-ventricular hypertrophy has similar incidence (15-20%) in patients with different forms of arterial hypertension, whereas excessive hypertrophy only occurs in patients with essential hypertension. The frequency of asymmetrical hypertrophy differs in the two groups.

[Comparison of structural and functional organization of adrenocorticotropic hormone and wasp kinin].

A comparative study of structural and functional organization of the polypeptides -- ACTH and wasp kinin was made. The effects of fragments Lys 17, 18-ACTH11(-18)-NH2--(I) and WK4(-12)--(II), possessing "common" fragments and a cluster of basic amino-acids, on the lipolytic and steroidogenic effects of ACTH and myotropic effects of bradykinin were studied. Both fragments I and II potentiate ACTH-induced lipolysis and steroidogenesis in isolated rat fat and adrenal cells but suppress the myotropic effect of bradykinin on guinea pig ileum. The similarity of biological effects of ACTH and WK fragments support our supposition on the similarity in structurally functional organization of these peptides.
