A new continuous human embryonic stem cell line (HESC-5) derived from a blastocyst is described. The cultured cell passed over 200 population doublings, which exceeds the Hayflick's limit sufficiently. The cells maintained a stable proliferative activity, high activity of alkaline phosphatase, and expression of transcription factor Oct-4 and of surface antigens SSEA-3, SSEA-4 and TRA-1-60 known to be characteristic of embryonic stem cells of the human origin. Immunofluorescent detection of antigens, characteristic of ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm in the new cell line HESC-5, and in the previously described other four stem cell lines confirms the ability of these cells to retain their pluripotency under in vitro condition. In addition, in all the cell lines, a high telomerase activity was revealed, which controls a stable telomere length and, hence, an unlimited ESC proliferation. Unlike other cell lines, HESC-5 was found, under specific conditions, to spontaneously differentiate into hematopoietic cells. A morphological similarity was shown between ESC colonies cultivated both on a feeder layer and in the non-feeder system.

The numerical karyotypic variability has been investigated in "markerless" epithelial-like Rat kangaroo kidney cell lines NBL-3-11 and NBL-3-17 on cultivation on a laminin-2/4 coated surface. In cell line NBL-3-17, cultivated on the laminin-coated surface for 2, 4 and 12 days, the character of numerical karyotypic variability has changed. In 2 days the general character of cell distribution for the chromosome number did not change, but the frequency of cells with modal number of chromosomes decreases significantly, while that of cells with lower chromosome number show a tendency to increase. At a prolongation of cultivation time to 4 and 12 days, the numerical karyotypic heterogeneity in cell population increases due to a significant change in the general character of cell distribution for the chromosome number, which is caused by a significant decrease in the frequency of cells with the modal number of chromosomes, and by an increase in the frequency of cells with lower chromosome number. The analysis of distribution of individual chromosomes showed that the number of types of additional structural variants of the karyotype (SVK) increases significantly on cultivation on laminin for 2-12 days. In cell line NBL-3-11, cultivated on the laminin-coated surface for 2 and 4 days, the character of numerical karyotypic variability did not change compared to control variants. Possible reasons of the observed changes of numerical karyotypic variability in cell line NBL-3-17 is discussed. The reason of differences in the character of numerical karyotypic variability between cell lines NBL-3-11 and NBL-3-17 possibly consists in the change of gene expression, namely in a dose of certain functioning genes. The polymerase chain reaction with arbitrary primers revealed no differences between DNA patterns of cell lines NBL-3-17 and NBL-3-11. This can reflect a similarity in the primary DNA structure of both cell lines. Hence, these lines differ only in the number of homologous chromosomes (hypotriploid and hypodiploid).

28 patients treated by programmed hemodialysis (PH) were followed up from 1985 to 1991. All the patients were over 60 years old. 16 patients died within month 1-60 since PH initiation. Overall PH duration for the whole group reached 24.6 +/- 3.58 months. Pretreatment urea and creatinine in plasma of senile patients were significantly lower than in young patients not resulting, though, in uremia reduction. The findings show that it is not valid to consider creatinine a determinant for starting hemodialysis in senile patients. Despite multimorbidity, more rapid progression of atherosclerosis and complicated establishment of the vascular approach, senile patients successfully adapt to PH regimen, need less numerous weekly PH hours. By anemia manifestations, incidence of hyperparathyroidism and polyneuropathy, senile patients did not differ much from their younger counterparts.
The main environmental unfavourable factors at dairy factories are noise, dust, microflora, microclimatic discomfort, insufficient lighting. Methodological recommendations were elaborated for improvement of working conditions to lower worker's morbidity.
The properties of antibodies to Candida albicans in healthy persons, candidiasis patients and patients with somatic pathology of nonmycotic genesis were studied. Healthy persons were found to have the highest avidity of antibodies at the minimal neutralizing dose of the antigen. In all groups the titers of antibodies were inversely related to their avidity.

The experimental study of conditions for the optimization of the batch cultivation of P. aeruginosa has been made. As revealed in this study the aim of this cultivation can be achieved by using exponentially growing culture in a dose of 1.10(9) cells/ml as seed material and by ensuring the conditions of rational air supply during the main cultivation process.

Organ- and tissue-specific antigens with affinity to C. albicans have been detected in some organs and tissues of the body. The occurrence of C. albicans colonization of different organs correlates with the presence of cross-reacting antigens in these organs.
Studies of mixed folder processing labour conditions revealed a set of unfavourable occupational factors, including poor microclimate, high level dust discharge and bacterial contamination in the air. The major health disorders among the workers engaged therein include upper respiratory and bronchopulmonary, locomotor system and perypheral NS and skin diseases.
54 patients with acute pneumonia were examined. There were 36 men and 18 women aged 16 to 72 years. Use was made of the clinico-roentgenological, bronchological and laboratory methods including biochemistry and immunoassays to assess the gravity of the patients' condition. The system protease inhibitors, the concentration of immunoglobulins in blood serum, circulating immune complexes, functional activity of neutrophils and monocytes of peripheral blood were under study. The major part of the patients (45 persons) did not develop destructive lesions, in 9 patients, pneumonia was complicated by suppurative-destructive lesions. In both patients' groups, the disease (in 90.3% of cases) ran its course with the signs of active virus infection. The risk factor for the destruction development was the rise of the laboratory gravity index to over 5-6 marks, a tendency towards the decrease of the phagocytic activity of monocytes and immunoglobulin M, the presence of unbalance in the system protease inhibitors at the expense of inadequate reduction of the antiproteolytic potential.
A total of 35 patients with non-specific pulmonary diseases were examined. Twenty-one patients were administered thymalin in addition to standard treatment. Fourteen subjects made up a control group. Immunologic studies made it possible to establish that administration of thymalin in relatively small doses (5 ml, 4-6 injections per treatment course) is an effective means of correcting the decreased characteristics of cellular immunity, favouring the normalization of the lymphocyte count and of the proportion of OKT-4+ and OKT-8+ subpopulations. The drug was found to exert no substantial effect on the other characteristics of immunity, namely on chemotaxis and phagocytosis of leukocytes, the content of immunoglobulins and on circulating immune complexes. Thymalin produced an appreciably beneficial action on the disease course in patients with preserved function of the phagocytic component.
