[Hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy. A paraneoplastic syndrome associated with lung cancer].

The case report presents a 52-year-old woman. The patient was a smoker, but did not have any pulmonary symptoms. Four months before admission she developed pains in her knee, ankle, elbow and finger joints. Bone scintigraphy showed periosteal new bone formation along the femur and tibia and increased tracer uptake in the hands. These findings were diagnosed as HPOA. Chest X-ray revealed a lung tumour.

[Epidural glucocorticoid injection in lumbago sciatica].

Within the past decades, epidural steroid injections have been used in the treatment of severe low back pain and sciatica. In reviewing papers for this article an effort is made to concentrate on those that meet commonly accepted research design criteria, such as being blinded, randomized and prospective. The risks and the advantages of the procedure are discussed. Some of the studies report an efficient reduction in low back pain and sciatica for a longer period. Risks of more serious complications are low using the right technique. However, the results are to some extent conflicting. Future correctly designed studies are necessary to clarify whether the injection should be a supplement to the established treatment of low back pain and sciatica.

Pancreatic cancer in the Faroe Islands. An epidemiologic study of patients with pancreatic cancer in the Faroe Islands 1972-82.

An epidemiologic study of pancreatic cancer was performed in the Faroe Islands, which have 44,000 inhabitants. All the patients with this diagnosis in the period 1972-82 were reviewed. The material comprised 57 patients. The diagnosis was confirmed microscopically in 67%, by explorative laparatomy in 28%, and by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in 5% of the patients. The average annual age-standardized incidence per 100,000 inhabitants (world standard) was 10.7 among men and 7.9 among women. The incidence of pancreatic cancer on the Faroe Islands is at the same high level as in the other Scandinavian countries, suggesting that industrial pollution has no pathogenic role. Nor could diseases or environmental, occupational, or familial factors be identified in the development of pancreatic cancer. High intake of lipids, available carbohydrates, and alcohol can be a contributory cause of developing pancreatic cancer.
