[Neuroprotective effect of kapakh, representative of new nootropic class non-anticholinesterase organophosphoric compounds].

In vivo and in vitro experiments revealed the neuroprotective activity of CAPAH, a representative of the new nootropic class phosphorylated carboxylic acid hydrazides. The mechanisms of this action, which were due to the membranous stabilizing activity of the drug and its affinity for glycine strychnine-sensitive sites of MMDA receptors (Ki = 8.8.10(-5) M). Six analogues of CAPAH have been also found to have affinity for these types of receptors; based on the examination of structure-affinity relationship, putative pharmacophores (only radicals of the benzene ring of a molecule in the para position exerted effects on affinity changes) were revealed. The findings give a deep insight into the mechanism of nootropic activity and open vistas for synthesizing phosphorylated carboxylic acid hydrazides as potential neuroprotective agents interacting with glycine strychnine-sensitive sites of MMDA receptor.

[Automated system for processing medical information].

The paper discusses an experience of development of a case history management information system intended for acquisition, storage and retrieval of integrated and documented information on in-patients. The system incorporates an EC-1010 type computer and employs the interactive mode of action using video-display units.

[Criteria for the "early diagnosis" of breast cancer].

Studies have indicated that the appearance of metastases in regional lymph nodes is not dependent on the tumor size. The probability that the tumor may be local is the greater the less its size. The term "early diagnosis" referred to prophylactic examinations in the up-to-date diagnostics remains to be unwarranted, without distinct boundaries, and the true tumor proliferation may be judged only after a histological assay of lymph nodes.

[Relationship between the size of the primary tumor, the presence of lymph node metastases and the survival of breast cancer patients].

An analysis is given of 449 case reports of patients with nodular breast cancer for the period from 1953 to 1967, who showed one tumor node. Most of patients (68%) were radically operated upon, tumor size being 1--4 cm. This is characteristic of patients both with and without metastases in lymph nodes. An average tumor size in the presence of metastases was 3.6 cm, without metastases--3.1 cm. With increasing tumor size the number of patients with lymph node metastases increases too. Metastases were found in 22.2% +/- 13.8% of patients with the tumor up to 1 cm, in 43.4% +/- 5,4% of patients with the tumor up to 1--2 cm. A five-year survival depends on tumor size and, to a greater extent, on the presence of metastases in lymph nodes.

[Study of the composition and elaboration of a catalytic method for purifying the gaseous waste from neomycin and monomycin production].

Composition of the waste gases in the production of neomycin and monomycin at the stages of fermentation, coagulation and filtration was studied. It was found that the main components of the waste gases in the production of neomycin and monomycin were carbon dioxide (0.15-6.0 mg/1), moisture (22-34 mg/1) and organic substances (0.5-4.2 mg/1) calculated for carbon dioxide. These substances have a specific unpleasant odour. A procedure for purification of the waste gases in the production of neomycin and monomycin by catalytic oxidation was developed.

[Results of surgical treatment of cancer of the large intestine].

The results of surgical treatment of 765 patients with colonic cancer are analysed, The resectability was 68.7%, postoperative mortality--in 16.3%. The most frequent causes of lethal issues were peritonitis and acute cardiovascular disturbances. The survival of 5 years and longer after radical operations was noted in 53.4 +/- 3.4%. The survival rate in patients with cancer of the right colon is reliably higher than that with the left colon involved. Hemicolectomy yielded better results compared with segmental resections. The worst results of the treatment were noted in stage T4--T3. The presence of metastases in regional lymph nodes reduces 3 times the number of patients survived for 5 years after radical surgery, compared with those without regional metastases. Late results of the treatment in mucous and solid cancers were several times worse than in adenocarcinoma.
