[The antimicrobial activity and acute toxicity of the polymer salts of gentamycin].

By neutralization of copolymers of N-(2-hydroxypropyl) methacrylamide with acrylic acid and copolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone with crotonic and p-crotonoylaminophenoxyacetic acids in the presence of gentamycin, water-soluble polymer salts containing from 10 to 25 mass% of gentamycin were obtained. These salts regardless of gentamycin content completely retain high level of antimicrobial activity of gentamycin against Staphylococcus spp. and Escherichia coli and are characterized by less (by more than one order of magnitude) acute toxicity.

Cellulose materials modified by antiseptics and their antimicrobial properties.

Adsorption properties of dressing cellulose materials with respect to surfactant antiseptics were studied. These antiseptics are a complex of the copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and crotonic acid with dimethylbenzylalkylammonium chloride (a synthetic polymer with a wide spectrum of antimicrobial effect) and its low molecular weight analogue (dimethylbenzylalkylammonium chloride). It was established that cellulose materials reversibly adsorb mentioned surfactant antiseptics depending on their concentration in the initial solutions. Maximum release of surfactant antiseptics is achieved at solutions at pH = 7.0. Microbiological tests of cellulose materials modified by antiseptics have shown that they exhibit antimicrobial activity. These results can be used in medical practice in clinics for imparting antimicrobial properties to dressing materials.

[Antibacterial action of the polymeric antiseptic catapol].

Activity of a polymer derivative of catamine AB, the antiseptic catapol, against gram positive and gram negative bacteria was studied. The effect of catapol on structural components of bacterial cells and permeability of bacterial cell membranes was investigated. The possibility of varying the susceptibility of bacteria to catapol and the effect of catapol on bacteria susceptible to antibiotics were evaluated. It was shown that by its in vitro antibacterial activity, catapol does not significantly differ from catamine AB.

[The ultrasonic diagnosis of the changes in the kidneys in renal forms of acute kidney failure].

An ultrasonic investigation of the kidneys in patients with renal forms of acute renal failure (32 and 24 with ethylene glycol poisoning and leptospirosis, respectively) recorded in the oligo-anuric phase a specific ultrasonic picture of renal lesion demonstrable as long as full recovery of impaired functions. The picture was characterized by enlargement of the kidneys with good differentiation of the pyramids in enhanced parenchymal echogenicity. Ethylene glycol poisoning is characterized by limited renal mobility and an echo negative halo around them. These signs may appear helpful in the diagnosis of renal forms of acute renal failure.

[Effect of the antiseptic merthiolate and its derivatives on fungi causing deterioration].

The fungistatic activity of merthiolate and its two polymerous derivatives have been investigated using as test cultures fungi producing deterioration. The fungicides sorbtion dynamics by the fungus micelium have been studied, toxicity and inhibition rate of the catalase from different sources have been evaluated. The polymerous derivatives have been found to maintain high fungistatic activity of merthiolate, but possess less toxicity. The sorbtion of the polymerous derivative by the fungal mycelium takes place more effectively than the merthiolate sorbtion. The probable reasons of the high activity of the merthiolate polymerous derivatives are under discussion.

[Effect of hydroacridine derivatives on the sensitivity of polyresistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli to antibiotics].

Sensitivity of 4 clinical strains of Staph. aureus and E. coli to 13 hydroacridine derivatives and their combinations with antibiotics, such as benzylpenicillin, ampicillin, semi-synthetic penicillins, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, chlortetracycline, monomycin, oleandomycin and erythromycin was studied. The highest bacteriostatic effect was observed on the use of perhydroactidine derivatives with benzylpenicillin or ampicillin with respect to polyresistant penicillinase-producing strains of Staph. aureus, resistance of which to these antibiotics was decreased 250--1000 times. Under the effect of the above compounds the staphylococcal resistance to chloramphenicol, tetracycline, chlortetracycline, oleandomycine and erythromycin decreased 2--66 times. The combinations of hydroacridine with the antibiotics, except 10-amino-trans-syn-trans-perhydroacridine had no effect on the resistance of the E. coli strains. The results of the combined effect of the above substances were associated with their chemical nature, the bacterial type and possibly the character of the strain resistance.

[Effect of synthetic poly-electrolytes of the cationic type on staphylococcal sensitivity to benzylpenicillin].

The study of the effect of synthetic polyelectrolites of the cationic type on benzylpenicillin resistant staphylococci showed that the cation polyelectrolites induced changes in the cell membrane permeability and increased penicillin absorption by the cells thus increasing sensitivity of the penicillin-resistant staphylococci to the antibiotic. Low inhibitory effect of the polyelectrolites with respect to penicillinase and hyaluronidase was shown. Changes in the membrane apparatus of staphylococcus cells due to the effect of polyelectrolites were found.

Some properties of the protease from Aspergillus terricola.

The protease from Aspergillus terricola (terrilytin) was isolated and purified by the ion exchange method and by gel chromatography. The data on its molecular weight, isoelectric point, N-terminal amino acids were described. The protease included polysaccharide which stabilized the enzyme activity under the storage and lyophylization. Polysaccharides isolated from different fungi and yeasts were found to stabilize and activate terrilytin rising the affinity of enzyme to substrate. Terrilytin was revealed to exhibit the thrombolytic effect and expressive affinity to the fibrin in comparison with other substrates of high and low molecular weight. The enzyme showed the antigenic activity. From immune rabbit sera 7S gamma-globulins inhibiting proteolysis of caseine and 19S gamma-globulins activating the proteolysis of fibrin and fibrinogen by terrilytin were isolated by gel chromatography.
