An improved technique for inhalation imaging.

Because of several limitations associated with conventional ventilation scintigraphy using radioactive gases, an alternative method appears desirable. This paper describes in detail, an inhalation technique that employs heated, nebulized Tc-99m DTPA aerosol delivered from a compact, shielded unit. The technique described has proved satisfactory and superior to ventilation scintigraphy using radioactive gases.

The scintigraphic diagnosis of splenic cysts.

In four patients, each of whom had a different type of splenic cyst, 99mTc-sulphur colloid images revealed non-specific, intrasplenic "cold" lesions. The rim of splenic tissue surrounding the cyst was incomplete in three out of four patients and caused appearances similar to those of splenic infarction. Repeat spleen imaging with 99mTc-RBC revealed an additional cyst in one out of four patients. 113m indium blood pool images provided preoperative information on lesion vascularity. The scintigraphic diagnosis of splenic cysts should ideally combine 99mTc-sulphur colloid imaging, 99mTc-RBC imaging, and 113m Indium blood pool imaging.

Mechanism of uptake of strontium isotopes in aspergillus lesions.

Observations on experimental aspergillosis of chorioallantoic membranes confirmed that strontium-85 uptake in aspergillus lesions was directly due to infection by the fungus. Such uptake was not found in normal or in Toxoplasma gondii-infected control membranes. Further, the avidity of radionuclide uptake was proportional to the mycelial mass, as previously observed clinically. Investigations on 85Sr containing malt extract broth Aspergillus fumigatus cultures revealed that fungal hyphas did not contain the major proportion of radioactivity, but culture filtrates did, and suggested that a fungal metabolite may be responsible for radiostrontium binding. Subsequent radiochromatography of filtrates obtained from A. fumigatus cultures confirmed the existence of such a metabolite. Several clinical and laboratory observations support the concept that an aspergillus metabolite at foci of infection binds 85Sr and 87mSr.

Detection of synovial cysts by transmission-emission scintigrams following intra-articular 169Yb-DTPA.

A new simple and safe technique for the detection of synovial cysts is described. This investigation employs combined transmission-emission scintigraphy following intra-articular injection of 169Yb-DTPA. Twenty-two joints were investigated in 18 patients. A high degree of correlation was found between clinical findings and the results of this investigation. The major advantages of this method are low local radiation to synovial linings, adequate visualisation of periarticular soft tissue, and small volumes required for intra-articular injection.
